Effects of crossover point exercise and high-intensity interval training on vascular health in young overweight females.

This study investigated the effects of 10 weeks of crossover point (COP) exercise training and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on cardiovascular risk factors and vascular health in overweight young women. Overweight young women were randomized into HIIT and COP groups. Participants in the HIIT group (n = 10; age = 22 ± 2, body mass index (BMI) = 25.72 ± 0.90) and COP group (n = 10, age = 21 ± 2, BMI = 25.90 ± 1.90) took part in 10 weeks of HIIT and COP exercise training, respectively. Cardiorespiratory fitness, cardiovascular health, and oxidative stress indicators were measured before

Sex-related differences in the peripheral vascular response to hypoxia: Implications in health and relevance for obstructive sleep apnoea.

The incidence and presentation of obstructive sleep apnoea, as well as hypertension and cardiovascular disease, have been reported to differ by sex. It is thus reasonable to propose mechanisms contributing to subsequent pathology differ by sex. This concept is supported from a pre-pathological perspective, as sex differences have been observed in the vascular response to hypoxia both alone and during concomitant hypoxia and sympathetic activation. However, the mechanisms governing the vascular response to hypoxia in females compared to males have only recently been examined, with the preponder

Accelerating inflammatory resolution in humans to improve endothelial function and vascular health: Targeting the non-canonical pathway for NO.

BACKGROUND: Chronic cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are characterised by low-grade systemic inflammation in part due to reduced nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability associated with endothelial dysfunction. Bioavailability of NO can be enhanced by activation of the non-canonical pathway, through increased dietary inorganic nitrate consumption with the potential to attenuate inflammation. METHODS: We sought to determine whether dietary inorganic nitrate influences the inflammatory response in models of localised (cantharidin-induced blisters) and systemic inflammation (typhoid vaccine), in healthy m

Retinal Arteriosclerosis in a Large Health Screening Cohort: Associations with Systemic Vascular Comorbidities and Stroke in Young Adults.

Background: Routine fundus photography is widely accessible; however, its utility in stratifying systemic vascular risk in asymptomatic, general populations remains understudied. We utilized a large-scale health screening cohort in South Korea to evaluate the clinical validity of the retinal arteriosclerosis index (RAI) in a generally healthy population. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 74,608 adults who underwent routine health screening (2003-2010) at a tertiary center. Retinal arteriosclerosis was graded (0-4) by masked readers with a modified Scheie classification; a higher

The evaluation of an HIV-PrEP drug on the vascular health outcomes in a diet-induced prediabetes condition rat model.

The prevalence of both prediabetes and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is a public health concern in high-risk individuals using HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (HIV-PrEP) treatment. The combined effect of prediabetes and HIV-PrEP use on endothelial function remains underexplored. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (FTC/TDF) on endothelial function, oxidative stress, inflammation and lipid markers. Prediabetes was induced using a high-fat high-carbohydrate diet over a 20-week period. Prediabetes diagnosis was confirmed using fa

Chronobiological disruptions: unravelling the interplay of shift work, circadian rhythms, and vascular health in the context of stroke risk.

Shift work, particularly night shifts, disrupts circadian rhythms and increases stroke risk. This manuscript explores the mechanisms connecting shift work with stroke, focusing on circadian rhythms, hypertension, and diabetes. The circadian system, controlled by different mechanisms including central and peripheral clock genes, suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), and pineal gland (through melatonin production), regulates body functions and responds to environmental signals. Disruptions in this system affect endothelial cells, leading to blood pressure issues. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is signi

Markers of terminally differentiated T-cells as predictors of vascular health in renal transplant recipients and healthy adults.

Meta-analyses confirm a link between persistent human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infections and cardiovascular disease, but the mechanisms are unclear. We assess whether proportions of T-cell populations are reliable predictors of subclinical atherosclerosis and/or reflect the burden of HCMV in healthy adults and renal transplant recipients (RTR). Samples were collected from healthy adults and RTR at baseline (T0) and after 32 (24-40) months (T1). Left carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) and proportions of T-cells expressing CD57, LIR-1 or the TEMRA phenotype increased in healthy adults and RTR.
