Evaluation of an Eight-Week Whole-Food Plant-Based Lifestyle Modification Program.

Poor diet quality is the leading cause of death both in the United States and worldwide, and the prevalence of obesity is at an all-time high and is projected to significantly worsen. Results from an eight-week group program utilizing an ad-libitum whole-food plant-based dietary pattern, were reviewed. There were 79 participants, all self-referred from the community, including 24 (30.4%) who were already vegetarian or vegan at baseline. Seventy-eight participants (98.7%) completed the eight-week program. Among completers, those with higher BMI at baseline lost a larger percentage of their body

Vitamin B12 Deficiency and West Syndrome: An Uncommon but Preventable Cause of Neurological Disorder. Report on Three Cases, One of Them with Late Onset during Vitamin B12 Treatment.

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a fundamental role as an essential cofactor for two enzymes responsible for the production of succinyl-CoA and methionine. Vitamin B12 deficiency can occur in infants and may be related to the breastfeeding mother's adherence to a vegan diet or somatic diseases in the mother. It should be differentiated from inborn errors of vitamin B12 metabolism. Herein, we report the cases of three infants with West syndrome; all three were breastfed by mothers who followed a strict vegan diet. In one of the three infants, West syndrome developed during trea

Vitamin B12 deficiency: unusual cause of jaundice in an adolescent.

Vitamin B12 deficiency in vegans is a known cause of megaloblastic anaemia. We report an adolescent girl who presented with jaundice and weight loss for 6 months secondary to vitamin B12 deficiency, leading to megaloblastic anaemia. Replacement with vitamin B12 reversed her symptoms, resulting in weight gain, and normalised her haemoglobin, red blood cell morphology, bilirubin levels and serum vitamin B12 levels.

Vitamin B12 sources and bioavailability.

The usual dietary sources of vitamin B(12) are animal foods, meat, milk, egg, fish, and shellfish. As the intrinsic factor-mediated intestinal absorption system is estimated to be saturated at about 1.5-2.0 microg per meal under physiologic conditions, vitamin B(12) bioavailability significantly decreases with increasing intake of vitamin B(12) per meal. The bioavailability of vitamin B(12) in healthy humans from fish meat, sheep meat, and chicken meat averaged 42%, 56%-89%, and 61%-66%, respectively. Vitamin B(12) in eggs seems to be poorly absorbed (< 9%) relative to other animal food produc

Decoding the Aroma Gap: Sensomics-Based Characterization of Key Odorants in the Plant-Based Egg and Chicken Egg.

This study presents the first molecular-level comparative analysis of chicken scrambled eggs and vegan scrambled eggs, identifying a total of 20 odorants using Aroma Extract Dilution Analysis (AEDA). Quantitation via Stable Isotope Dilution Assay (SIDA) and calculation of dose over threshold (DoT) factors revealed 15 key odorants with DoT factors > 1 in scrambled chicken eggs, while scrambled vegan eggs exhibited 11 key odorants with DoT factors > 1. Notably, the vegan product lacked five critical compounds: (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal (cucumber-like), 2,3-butanedione (butter-like), (E)-2-nonenal (fa

Micronutrient Status of Recreational Runners with Vegetarian or Non-Vegetarian Dietary Patterns.

Vegetarian diets have gained popularity in sports. However, few data exist on the status of micronutrients and related biomarkers for vegetarian and vegan athletes. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare the micronutrient status of omnivorous (OMN, n = 27), lacto-ovo-vegetarian (LOV, n = 26), and vegan (VEG, n = 28) recreational runners. Biomarkers of vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D, and iron were assessed. Additionally, serum levels of calcium, magnesium, and zinc were examined. Lifestyle factors and supplement intake were recorded via questionnaires. About 80% of each group show

[Maternal vitamin B12 deficiency: cause for neurological symptoms in infancy].

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of Vitamin B (12) deficiency in infancy include growth retardation, regression of psychomotor development, muscular hypotonia and brain atrophy. Besides an inappropriate vegetarian diet of the infants, a vegan diet or a pernicious anaemia of the mother may lead to an insufficient vitamin B (12) supply of the child. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report here the neurological symptoms of 4 fully breast-fed infants from mothers on vegan diet or with pernicious anaemia. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Vitamin B (12) deficiency can easily be diagnosed by detection of methylmalonic acid

Are Dietary Patterns Relevant for Reducing the Risk of Fractures and Sarcopenia?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to summarise recent evidence on the effects of dietary patterns on the risk of bone fractures and sarcopenia. RECENT FINDINGS: Several dietary patterns have been investigated in relation to musculoskeletal health, including Mediterranean Dietary Patterns (MDP), Dietary Inflammatory Indices, vegetarian and vegan diets. Adherence to 'healthier' dietary patterns appears to be protective against fractures and sarcopenia, with the strongest protective associations found between the MDP and fractures. Individuals following vegan or vegetarian eating patterns need

Nutritional issues in treating phenylketonuria.

A phenylalanine (Phe)-restricted diet is the mainstay of phenylketonuria (PKU) treatment, and, in recent years, the nutritional management of PKU has become more complex in order to optimize patients' growth, development and diet compliance. Dietary restriction of Phe creates a diet similar to a vegan diet, and many of the nutritional concerns and questions applicable to vegans who wish to avoid animal products are also relevant to patients with PKU. Owing to their nutritional characteristics, breast milk and breastfeeding should be given greater consideration as a useful food in patients with

A Plant-Based High-Carbohydrate, Low-Fat Diet in Overweight Individuals in a 16-Week Randomized Clinical Trial: The Role of Carbohydrates.

The effects of carbohydrates on body weight and insulin sensitivity are controversial. In this 16-week randomized clinical trial, we tested the role of a low-fat, plant-based diet on body weight, body composition and insulin resistance. As a part of this trial, we investigated the role of changes in carbohydrate intake on body composition and insulin resistance. Participants (n = 75) were randomized to follow a plant-based high-carbohydrate, low-fat (vegan) diet (n = 38) or to maintain their current diet (n = 37). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure body composition. Insulin r

Defying Dietary Homogeneity: Stable Isotopes in Hair Reveal Persistent Geographic Heterogeneity in Argentina's Modern Diet.

OBJECTIVES: The main objective of the study is to characterize and test the hypothesis of a continuing trend toward homogenization in contemporary Argentine diet through stable isotope analysis, exploring regional variation in the context of globalized food systems. It is expected that the distribution of stable isotopes will exhibit a limited range of values but still display some heterogeneity that allows differentiation of dietary patterns by region. METHODS: A total of 204 hair samples were collected from volunteer donors in Argentina and analyzed for the stable isotopes δ13C, δ15N, and δ

Beyond sports: Efficacy and safety of creatine supplementation in pathological or paraphysiological conditions of brain and muscle.

Creatine is pivotal in energy metabolism of muscle and brain cells, both in physiological and in pathological conditions. Additionally, creatine facilitates the differentiation of muscle and neuronal cells. Evidence of effectiveness of creatine supplementation in improving several clinical conditions is now substantial, and we review it in this paper. In hereditary diseases where its synthesis is impaired, creatine has a disease-modifying capacity, especially when started soon after birth. Strong evidence, including a Cochrane meta-analysis, shows that it improves muscular strength and general

Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Recognition and Management.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is a common cause of megaloblastic anemia, various neuropsychiatric symptoms, and other clinical manifestations. Screening average-risk adults for vitamin B12 deficiency is not recommended. Screening may be warranted in patients with one or more risk factors, such as gastric or small intestine resections, inflammatory bowel disease, use of metformin for more than four months, use of proton pump inhibitors or histamine H2 blockers for more than 12 months, vegans or strict vegetarians, and adults older than 75 years. Initial laboratory assessment should include a complete
