Conditional-associative learning in eating disorders: a comparison with OCD.

The acquisition of conditional associations using neutral and individually threatening verbal stimuli was assessed in 16 females with anorexia nervosa (AN), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bulimia nervosa and normal controls, respectively. Groups did not differ in terms of age, sex, intelligence, depression, verbal memory and verbal fluency measures. Patients and controls were widely comparable on tests assessing neuropsychological functioning. In the conditional-associative learning (CAL)-task only anorectic and OCD-patients displayed an impaired performance with neutral material but not

Dissociating arabic numeral reading and basic calculation: a case study.

This study is about JS, a patient who suffered from anomia, phonological dyslexia and severe writing problems following a left hemispheric stroke. He showed good arabic numeral comprehension as evidenced in number-comparison tasks, but impairment in transcoding arabic numerals into verbal numbers and verbal numbers into arabic numerals. Although JS had several operand reading errors, the four arithmetic operations were not affected. In calculations with arabic numerals, he produced the correct results both in oral and written responses. For instance, when presented with the multiplication "7 x

Selective category and modality effects in deep dyslexia.

We report a patient (FBI) in whom a category specific deep dyslexia was demonstrated. The patient was globally dysphasic with dyslexia and dysgraphia, and his dyslexic syndrome was characterised by a dramatic loss of phonological processing together with a partial loss of whole word reading. In the context of an overall poor level of reading accuracy, concrete words were read better than abstract words. Within this concrete word vocabulary, living items were read more accurately that non-living items. Perhaps most strikingly, he also had a remarkably preserved written proper noun vocabulary. A

Multiple voices in Charles Van Riper's desensitization therapy.

BACKGROUND: Charles Van Riper (1905-94) author, researcher and practitioner, was one of the major contributors to the field of stuttering in the 20th century. His series of Action Therapy videotapes provide a useful model of how therapy was implemented by a master clinician. AIMS: Van Riper's session with a client is analysed to reveal how voices are used by these two participants during desensitization therapy, and to demonstrate how Van Riper's expertise manifests itself during the session. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Interaction between Van Riper and a client during the desensitization stage of

Two types of phonological dyslexia - a contemporary review.

Friedman (1995) presents a review of 6 phonological dyslexic cases in which she suggests that this reading impairment is divisible into subtypes on the basis of two straightforward behavioural profiles: (1) cases with poor function word reading and normal nonword repetition (3 cases) and (2) cases with good function word reading and poor nonword repetition (3 cases). This evidence is interpreted as support for a reading model that does not posit a non-lexical reading route (Harm and Seidenberg, 2001, 2004; Plaut, et al. 1996), with the pattern of impairment in case (1) being due to disruption

Multistable syllables as enacted percepts: a source of an asymmetric bias in the verbal transformation effect.

Perceptual changes are experienced during rapid and continuous repetition of a speech form, leading to an auditory illusion known as the verbal transformation effect. Although verbal transformations are considered to reflect mainly the perceptual organization and interpretation of speech, the present study was designed to test whether or not speech production constraints may participate in the emergence of verbal representations. With this goal in mind, we examined whether variations in the articulatory cohesion of repeated nonsense words--specifically, temporal relationships between articulat

Verbatim and gist recall of sentences by dyslexic and non-dyslexic adults.

Forty-eight college students, 24 of them dyslexic, were presented with four sentences of increasing complexity. Participants were asked to repeat each sentence and a record was kept of the number of repetitions required before 100% correct accuracy was achieved. None of the 24 control participants required a total of more than eight repetitions over the four sentences, whereas among the dyslexics the total number of repetitions needed ranged from one to 25. Dyslexic participants were unpredictable in their performance from one level of difficulty to the next and inter-individual variability wa

[The function of neologism in relation to the precipitating process of psychosis].

Based on clinical observations, the author presented his reflections on the function of neologism appearing during the initial phase of psychosis. When the patient feels he is being interrogated as to his membership in certain groups significant to him, the neologism becomes manifest; neologism keeps him in touch with the group in that its content reflects how the patient feels he is viewed by the group; the patient, however, is not able to question his membership on a conscious level, but receives all at once, through auditory hallucinations, an affirmative answer in neologism. Why does neolo

Neural basis of three dimensions of agitated behaviors in patients with Alzheimer disease.

BACKGROUND: Agitated behaviors are frequently observed in patients with Alzheimer disease (AD). The neural substrate underlying the agitated behaviors in dementia is unclear. We hypothesized that different dimensions of agitated behaviors are mediated by distinct neural systems. METHODS: All the patients (n=32) underwent single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Using the Agitated Behavior in Dementia scale, we identified the relationships between regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) patterns and the presence of each of three dimensions of agitated behavior (physically agitated behav

Derived transformation of children's pregambling game playing.

Contemporary behavior-analytic perspectives on gambling emphasize the impact of verbal relations, or derived relational responding and the transformation of stimulus functions, on the initiation and maintenance of gambling. Approached in this way, it is possible to undertake experimental analysis of the role of verbal/mediational variables in gambling behavior. The present study therefore sought to demonstrate the ways new stimuli could come to have functions relevant to gambling without those functions being trained directly. Following a successful derived-equivalence-relations test, a simula

Intrafamilial conflict and emotional well-being: a population based study among Icelandic adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: During intrafamilial conflicts children are often innocent bystanders, caught in the crossfire. In such situations, they are at increased risk to become directly involved in abusive verbal behavior of the perpetrator, and exposed to being shouted or yelled at, threatened, rejected and even physically abused. The present study has two main objectives: (1) ascertain a national base rate of intrafamilial conflicts and physical violence at home among Icelandic adolescents; and (2) to investigate the association of witnessing and/or having been a part of intrafamilial conflict or physic

The neurocognitive profile of adults with Becker muscular dystrophy in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: In Becker muscular dystrophy evidence for neurocognitive and behavioral comorbidity is evolving. More insight into the extend of these problems is of great importance for early detection and remediation in clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: In this study we aimed to describe the neurocognitive and behavioral features of a Dutch adult cohort of BMD patients, and to evaluate correlations to motor function outcomes. METHODS: 28 adult BMD patients were included. Intelligence, executive functioning, verbal memory and reaction times were assessed cross-sectionally. Additionally, patients co

How the Brunswikian Lens Model Illustrates the Relationship Between Physiological and Behavioral Signals and Psychological Emotional and Cognitive States.

Social relationships are constructed by and through the relational communication that people exchange. Relational messages are implicit nonverbal and verbal messages that signal how people regard one another and define their interpersonal relationships-equal or unequal, affectionate or hostile, inclusive or exclusive, similar or dissimilar, and so forth. Such signals can be measured automatically by the latest machine learning software tools and combined into meaningful factors that represent the socioemotional expressions that constitute relational messages between people. Relational messages

Neurocognitive functions and behavioral profiles in children with nephropathic cystinosis.

Children with nephropathic cystinosis (NCTN) have evidence of defective intellectual functions and behavioral disorders. This prospective study was performed to detect the cognitive dysfunctions in patients with this rare hereditary lysosomal storage disease, define their behavioral phenotypes, and study the findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain. Thirteen patients with confirmed diagnosis of cystinosis (mean age±SD 5.9±3.0, range 1.5-12 years) were subjected to the Stanford Binet test, Porteus Maze test, Child Behavior Checklist, and MRI brain. Thirteen age- and sex-matched

Caring for children with intellectual disabilities part 2: Detailed analyses of factors involved in respite workers' reported assessment and care decisions.

UNLABELLED: Respite workers (RW) commonly care for children with intellectual disabilities (ID), and pain is common for these children. Little is known about factors which inform RW pain assessment and management-related decisions. OBJECTIVES: To describe/determine the following in response to a series of pain-related scenarios (e.g., headache, falling): (1) factors considered important by RW when assessing children with ID's pain; (2) whether children's verbal ability impacts pain assessment factors considered; (3) RW assessment and management approach. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-six RW (18-67 yea

Auditory verbal memory and psychosocial symptoms are related in children with idiopathic epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Idiopathic epilepsies are considered to have relatively good prognoses and normal or near normal developmental outcomes. Nevertheless, accumulating studies demonstrate memory and psychosocial deficits in this population, and the prevalence, severity and relationships between these domains are still not well defined. We aimed to assess memory, psychosocial function, and the relationships between these two domains among children with idiopathic epilepsy syndromes using an extended neuropsychological battery and psychosocial questionnaires. METHODS: Cognitive abilities, neuropsycholog

The effects of noncontingent music and response interruption and redirection on vocal stereotypy.

Vocal stereotypy is a commonly occurring challenging behavior in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that is frequently maintained by automatic reinforcement and often interferes with skill acquisition. Matched stimulation (MS), and response interruption and redirection (RIRD) are two interventions that have been demonstrated to be effective in reducing the occurrence of vocal stereotypy with participants with ASD. The current study sought to determine if the combination of MS (noncontingent music) and RIRD was more effective at reducing vocal stereotypy than RIRD alone and if the par
