Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was injected or iontophoretically ejected in various thalamic nuclei in 63 adult cats. In 11 other animals HRP was deposited outside the thalamic territory. The number and distribution of labelled cells within the vestibular nuclear complex (VC) were mapped in each case. To a varying degree all subgroups of VC appear to contribute to the vestibulothalamic projections. Such fibres are distributed to several thalamic areas. From the present investigation it appears that generally speaking, there exist three distinct vestibulothalamic pathways with regard to origin as

A patient having the diagnosis of an anterior inferior cerebellar artery insufficiency died 36 hours after the onset of the symptoms that allowed this diagnosis. The special features of this study include a known symmetric 40-dB hearing loss 1 year prior to the onset of the symptoms, the noted decrease in hearing and severe vertigo heralding the vascular accident, the ensuring neurologic deficits, and the short duration of the patient's life after the onset of her symptoms. The patient's clinical course and the histopathologic findings of the brain stem involved the vestibular nuclei, facial n

Acute peripheral vestibular dysfunction is associated with a variety of postural and balance disturbances. Vestibular rehabilitation training (VRT) is widely acknowledged as an effective intervention for promoting vestibular compensation. Nevertheless, the broader implementation of early VRT is hindered by an incomplete understanding of its neurobiological mechanisms. Building upon prior research, the present study investigates the effects of early VRT on postural behavior and the cellular mechanisms within the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) following unilateral vestibular neurectomy (UVN) in

Vestibular neuronitis was described in 1949 and 1952 by Dix and Hallpike. Two groups of patients were described, those with sudden seizures and sensations of blackout (since identified as having vestibular neuritis) and a second group with symptoms of disequilibrium and feelings of top-heaviness or imbalance. The pathology was believed to be central to the inner ear. Arslan labeled these groups as having nucleoreticular vestibular syndrome. Using a suprathreshold stapedial reflex test, Bosatra localized the pathophysiology in the brainstem, an area rich in serotonergic neurons. This author has

The vestibular system is a small bilateral structure located in the inner ear, known as the organ of balance and spatial orientation. It senses head orientation and motion, as well as body motion in the three dimensions of our environment. It is also involved in non-motor functions such as postural control of blood pressure. These regulations are mediated via anatomical projections from vestibular nuclei to brainstem autonomic centers and are involved in the maintenance of cardiovascular function via sympathetic nerves. Age-associated dysfunction of the vestibular organ contributes to an incre

We found a selective loss of vestibular hair cells in a patient followed for more than 10 years with imbalance and oscillopsia due to idiopathic progressive loss of vestibular function. Hearing function and cochlear hair cells were normal. The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain at high frequencies was relatively maintained despite marked shortening of the dominant VOR time constant (to less than 500 ms). Ultrastructural examination of remaining hair cells showed mitochondrial abnormalities. The ultrashort VOR time constant probably resulted from changes in firing patterns of the primary affere

The vestibular system is vital for proper balance perception, and its dysfunction contributes significantly to fall-related injuries, especially in the elderly. Vestibular ganglion neurons innervate vestibular hair cells at the periphery and vestibular nuclei and the uvula and nodule of the cerebellum centrally. During aging, these vestibular ganglion neurons degenerate, impairing vestibular function. A complete understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in neurosensory cell survival in the vestibular system is unknown. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is specifically required

A case of sudden bilateral hearing loss in a diabetic patient is reported. Acoustic-vestibular examination indicated a lesion localized in the brain stem although no other neurological abnormality was found. Postmortem examination demonstrated severe vascular changes of the brain stem. Areas of fresh infarction and necrosis were found localized to the cochlear and vestibular nuclei. The case demonstrates that central vascular disorders may be the cause of sudden severe hearing loss even without other neurological symptoms or signs.

Four cases of progressive autonomic failure are described, in all of which there were additional non-autonomic neurological abnormalities, including pyramidal, extra-pyramidal and cerebellar features. Histological examination revealed cell degeneration in the substantia nigra, putamen and intermediolateral columns of the spinal cord as a common pathological finding. In addition, 3 cases showed loss of Purkinje cells in the cerebellum and degeneration of pontine nuclei and inferior olivary nuclei. In one case there was cell loss from the locus coeruleus, caudate nucleus, vestibular nuclei and d

The incidence of auditory disturbances in vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) is considered much rarer than vestibular disturbances, but no routine audiometric test results for VBI patients have been published. To determine the incidence of deafness associated with VBI and the sites predominantly involved in deafness, we studied 70 vertiginous patients with VBI using a routine audiological examination and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI detected a lacunar infarct involving the cochlear nuclei in one patient, but lacunae did not involve central auditory structures in the other patients. T

The nodulus and uvula (lobules X and IX of the vermis) receive mossy fibers from both vestibular afferents and vestibular nuclei neurons and are thought to play a role in spatial orientation. Their properties relate to a sensory ambiguity of the vestibular periphery: otolith afferents respond identically to translational (inertial) accelerations and changes in orientation relative to gravity. Based on theoretical and behavioral evidence, this sensory ambiguity is resolved using rotational cues from the semicircular canals. Recordings from the cerebellar cortex have identified a neural correlat

PURPOSE: Masseter vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (mVEMP) involve the connection between the vestibular complex and trigeminal nerve nuclei. Given the theory that migraine is caused by increased activation of the trigeminal nerve, it is believed that mVEMP responses may have influenced in migraine patients.
METHOD: The study included 20 individuals with migraine and 20 healthy controls. Latency, amplitude, and interaural amplitude asymmetry ratio of mVEMP responses recorded in migraine patients were compared with control group.
RESULTS: Considering the mVEMP normalization study conduct

The precise functional role of the Efferent Vestibular System (EVS) is still unclear, but the auditory olivocochlear efferent system has served as a reasonable model on the effects of a cholinergic and peptidergic input on inner ear organs. However, it is important to appreciate the similarities and differences in the structure of the two efferent systems, especially within the same animal model. Here, we examine the anatomy of the mouse EVS, from its central origin in the Efferent Vestibular Nucleus (EVN) of the brainstem, to its peripheral terminations in the vestibular organs, and we compar

A monoclonal antibody (B1) produced against rat embryonic forebrain membranes shows specific and striking immunohistochemical staining of Purkinje cells in the monkey cerebellum in a pattern of broad parasagittal alternating bands of cells either possessing or lacking the B1 antigen. In addition, the neurons of the deep cerebellar nuclei and some neurons of the motor cortex and of the spinal cord also contain the B1 antigen. Neurons with the B1 antigen were also seen in the somatosensory cortex, the vestibular and cochlear nuclei, and the retina.

Sense organ deposits have been described in temporal bones from patients with vestibular neuronitis, Meniere's disease, and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo that are not found in a comparable series of temporal bones without vestibulopathy. Because the recurrent vestibulopathies are caused by vestibular ganglionitis and the vestibulocochlear anastomosis was degenerated in these temporal bones, the deposits may represent the end buds of regenerating efferent axons injured in passage through the vestibular ganglion. Such neural buds have been described with transmission electron microscopy i

The use of modified, less laborious, easier endured vestibulometric tests made it possible to facilitate diagnosing Menière's disease and neurinomas of the vestibular nerve. Comparison of nystagmometric findings recorded in the same patient during caloric and rotation tests using the diagnostic model of a bithermal test permitted some assumptions to be made in relation to the mechanisms for nystagmogenesis associated with pathologic states in ear labyrinth and vestibular portion craniocerebral (VIII) nerve. It is found that in the majority of Meniere's disease cases (61%) there is a decrease i

To determine whether the vestibular nuclei are affected by inflammation of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region, we studied vestibular nucleus neural activity using two experimental groups: (1) normal saline 0.1cm(3) injection at right TMJ region, (2) 10% formalin 0.1cm(3) injection at right TMJ region. Neural activity after 24 hours was assessed by immunohistochemical staining with free-floating section at the level of interaural -1.30 mm to -2.00 mm for c-Fos. In inflammation group, formalin injection produced a bilateral increase in c-Fos at vestibular nucleus with ipsilesional side higher

During development, transcription factor combinatorial codes define a large variety of morphologically and physiologically distinct neurons. Such a combinatorial code has been proposed for the differentiation of projection neurons of the somatic and visceral components of cranial nerves. It is possible that individual neuronal cell types are not specified by unique transcription factors but rather emerge through the intersection of their expression domains. Brn3a, Brn3b, and Brn3c, in combination with each other and/or transcription factors of other families, can define subgroups of retinal ga

Although the supplementary motor area (SMA) is a large region on the medial surface of the frontal lobe of the brain, little is known about its function. The current study uses 3-tesla high-resolution diffusion tensor tractography (DTI) in healthy individuals and biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) and fluoro-gold (FG) tracer in rats to demonstrate the afferent and efferent connections of the SMA with brainstem structures. It also aims to clarify how SMA fibers relate to the corticospinal tract (CST). The BDA (n = 6) and FG (n = 8) tracers were pressure-injected into the SMA of 14 Wistar albino r

The organization of the projection from the dorsal column nuclei (DCN) to the lobules of the cerebellar caudal vermis was studied in the rabbit. Following unilateral injections of the retrograde fluorescent tracers fast blue (FB) and diamidino yellow (DY) into the pyramis (Pr) and uvula (Uv), respectively, a great number of single FB- (40%) and DY-labeled (60%) neurons were observed in the ipsilateral (79%) and contralateral (21%) DCN subdivisions. These neurons, as parents for the DCN-Pr and DCN-Uv projections, were numerous in the lateral cuneate nucleus (CuL; 84 and 74%, respectively) and i
