Otto Deiters, for whom the lateral vestibular nucleus and the supporting cells of the outer auditory hair cells were named, died in 1863 aged 29. He taught in the Bonn Anatomy Department, had an appointment in the University Clinic, and ran a small private practice. He published articles on the cell theory, the structure and development of muscle fibers, the inner ear, leukaemia, and scarlet fever. He was the second of five surviving children in an academic family whose private correspondence revealed him to be a young man with limited social skills and high ambitions to complete a deeply orig

The regeneration of axons after a spinal cord injury or disease is attracting a significant amount of interest among researchers. Being able to assess these axons in terms of morphology, length and origin is essential to our understanding of the regeneration process. Recently, two specific axon tracers have gained much recognition; biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) 10 kDa as an anterograde tracer and cholera toxin-B as a retrograde tracer. However, there are still several complexities when using these tracers, including the volume that should be administered and the best administration site so

We made an animal model of cervical spinal cord injury in a cat and performed electrophysiological, histological, and bechavioral studies. The cervical spinal cord injury model was made by inserting a screw through the fourth cervical vertebral body of the cat. After the injury, muscle tonus of the limbs and trunk diminished. The cat was able to walk and to perform target reaching after the injury, although the trunk was unstable and the movement of the forelimb was ataxic. Atrophy of the back muscle remained. The cat was unable to stand bipedally. These behavioral disturbances suggested dysfu

A new gerbil model of hindbrain ischemia was induced by extracranial occlusion of the bilateral vertebral arteries just before their entry into the transverse foramen of the cervical vertebra. Carbon black studies, performed at 5 min after occlusion, revealed that the pons-medulla oblongata, and the cerebellum were quite ischemic in all animals. Cardiovascular changes in mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) and heart rate were recorded until 30 min after occlusion, and revealed that the typical cerebral ischemic response (i.e., abrupt increase in MABP, bradycardia, and apnea) was elicited in al

Pendred syndrome and autosomal recessive non-syndromic hearing loss, type 4 (DFNB4), are associated with mutations in SLC26A4 that encodes the anion transporter SLC26A4 (pendrin). SLC26A4 is expressed in mitochondria-rich cells of the endolymphatic sac, spindle and root cells in the cochlear lateral wall, transitional cells in the vestibular organs, follicular cells in the thyroid, and type B intercalated cells in the kidney. This study aimed to assess the gene profiles of murine Slc26a4-expressing cells to better understand the regulatory mechanisms and functions of SLC26A4. Publicly availabl

Clinical effects of anti-cholinergic drugs implicate cholinergic systems alterations in the pathophysiology of some cardinal motor impairments in Parkinson's disease. The topography of affected cholinergic systems deficits and motor domain specificity are poorly understood. Parkinson's disease patients (n = 108) underwent clinical and motor assessment and vesicular acetylcholine transporter [18F]-fluoroethoxybenzovesamicol PET imaging. Volumes-of-interest-based analyses included detailed thalamic and cerebellar parcellations. Successful PET sampling for most of the small-sized parcellations wa

An impairment of eye movements, or nystagmus, is seen in many diseases of the central nervous system, in particular those affecting the brainstem and cerebellum, as well as in those of the vestibular system. The key to diagnosis is a systematic clinical examination of the different types of eye movements, including: eye position, range of eye movements, smooth pursuit, saccades, gaze-holding function and optokinetic nystagmus, as well as testing for the different types of nystagmus (e.g., central fixation nystagmus or peripheral vestibular nystagmus). Depending on the time course of the signs

Adenosine 5' triphosphate (ATP) and acetylcholine (ACh) are neurotransmitters (ACh) and/or modulators (ATP) in the mammalian cochlea. In guinea pig, it appears that both neurotransmitters have a similar response distribution, with larger responses being evoked by the ligands in short hair cells compared to long hair cells (e.g., Chen et al., 1995b. Noise exposure alters the response of outer hair cells to ATP. Hear. Res. 88, 215-221.; Erostegui et al., 1994. In vitro pharmacologic characterization of a cholinergic receptor on outer hair cells. The initial development of the cranial nerves was studied in 245 human embryos of stages 10-23 (4-8 postfertilizational weeks). Significant findings in the human embryo include the following. (1) Neuronal migration is a characteristic feature in the development of all the cranial nerves at stages 13-18, with the exception of the somatic efferent group. (2) The somatic efferent and the visceral efferent neurons are arranged respectively in ventrolateral and ventromedial columns (stages 13-17). (3) The ventrolateral column gives rise to somatic efferent nuclei; the neurons of the hypoglossal ner

BACKGROUND: Feline models of neurologic diseases, such as lysosomal storage diseases, leukodystrophies, Parkinson's disease, stroke and NeuroAIDS, accurately recreate many aspects of human disease allowing for comparative study of neuropathology and the testing of novel therapeutics. Here we describe in vivo visualization of fine structures within the feline brain that were previously only visible post mortem.
NEW METHOD: 3Tesla MR images were acquired using T1-weighted (T1w) 3D magnetization-prepared rapid gradient echo (MPRAGE) sequence (0.4mm isotropic resolution) and T2-weighted (T2w) tur

To clarify the effect of vasogenic brain edema on the brainstem, the relationships between waveform changes in brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disturbance following transient hindbrain ischemia were investigated. Hindbrain ischemia was induced in gerbils by bilateral occlusion of the vertebral arteries. The animals were divided into three groups subjected to 0, 5, and 30 min of bilateral vertebral occlusion (BVO-0',-5', and -30' groups; n = 4 in each group). Two hours after recirculation, Evans blue (EB) solution was injected into the saphenous vein. T

Although the supplementary motor area (SMA) is a large region on the medial surface of the frontal lobe of the brain, little is known about its function. The current study uses 3-tesla high-resolution diffusion tensor tractography (DTI) in healthy individuals and biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) and fluoro-gold (FG) tracer in rats to demonstrate the afferent and efferent connections of the SMA with brainstem structures. It also aims to clarify how SMA fibers relate to the corticospinal tract (CST). The BDA (n = 6) and FG (n = 8) tracers were pressure-injected into the SMA of 14 Wistar albino r

BACKGROUND: Establishing correct neuronal circuitry is crucial to proper function of the vertebrate nervous system. The abundance of chondroitin sulfate (CS) proteoglycans in embryonic neural environments suggests that matrix proteoglycans regulate axonal projections when fiber tracts have not yet formed. Among the early-born neurons, the vestibular nucleus (VN) neurons initiate commissural projections soon after generation at E12.5 and reach the contralateral target by E15.5 in the rat hindbrain. We therefore exploited 24-hour cultures (1 day in vitro (DIV)) of the rat embryos and chondroitin

During breathing, the diaphragm and abdominal muscles contract out of phase. However, during other behaviors (including vomiting, postural adjustments, and locomotion) simultaneous contractions are required of the diaphragm and other muscle groups including abdominal muscles. Recent studies in cats using transneuronal tracing techniques showed that in addition to neurons in the respiratory groups, cells in the inferior and lateral vestibular nuclei (VN) and medial pontomedullary reticular formation (MRF) influence diaphragm activity. The goal of the present study was to determine whether neuro

It has been found that 'conditioning' noise exposures can render the inner ear more resistant to traumatic noise exposures. To explore the possible mechanisms underlying this phenomenon, filamentous actin (F-actin), labeled by rhodamine-phalloidin, was examined in the chinchilla cochlea using confocal fluorescence microscopy. The conditioning noise was 0.5 kHz octave band noise (OBN) at 90 dB SPL for 6 h/day and the high-level noise was the same noise but at 105 dB SPL for 4 h. A variety of pathological changes were found in the chinchilla cochlea after exposure to noise. Subjects exposed to c

Taurine is the second most abundant free amino acid in the brain where its osmoregulatory function is well established. Taurine-deprived kittens show retinal pathology leading to blindness. In the inner ear, taurine has been reported to be the most abundant free amino acid although its role in inner ear function is not known. Immunohistochemistry was employed here to investigate the localisation of taurine in normal cochleae of the guinea pig compared with two different conditions: experimentally induced endolymphatic hydrops and after oral administration of glycerol. In normal cochleae, by li

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Gait disturbance due to injuries of the descending motor pathway, including corticospinal tract (CST), corticoreticular pathway (CRP), and medial and lateral vestibulospinal tracts (VSTs), are commonly encountered disabling sequelae of pontine hemorrhage. We investigated relations between changes in the CST, CRP, and medial and lateral VST and corresponding changes in gait function in patients with pontine hemorrhage.
METHOD: Nine consecutive stroke patients with pontine hemorrhage, and 6 age-matched normal subjects were recruited. Four patients were allocated to group

OBJECTIVE: The cochlear nucleus (CN) is the target of the auditory brainstem implant (ABI). Most ABI candidates have Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) and distorted brainstem anatomy from bilateral vestibular schwannomas. The CN is difficult to characterize as routine structural MRI does not resolve detailed anatomy. We hypothesize that diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) enables both in vivo localization and quantitative measurements of CN morphology.
STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed 7 Tesla (T) DTI images of 100 subjects (200 CN) and relevant anatomic structures using an MRI brainstem atlas with submillim
