Psychiatric comorbidity pattern in treatment-seeking veterans.

This study investigated comorbidity patterns in treatment-seeking veterans and currently-serving Canadian Forces members of an outpatient mental health clinic from September 2006-September 2014. Using a retrospective cohort design, latent class analysis was conducted to determine latent classes of comorbidity (including posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], major depressive disorder [MDD], generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and alcohol use disorder [AUD]). Multiple logistic regression was used to determine which covariates (age, gender, number of deployments, and service duration) w

Male partner reproductive coercion among women veterans.

BACKGROUND: Male partner reproductive coercion is defined as male partners' attempts to promote pregnancy through interference with women's contraceptive behaviors and reproductive decision-making. Male partners may try to promote pregnancy through birth control sabotage such as taking away or destroying their partners' contraceptives, refusing to wear condoms, and/or verbally pressuring their partners to abstain from contraceptive use. Reproductive coercion is associated with an elevated risk for unintended pregnancy. Women who experience intimate partner violence, who are in racial/ethnic mi

Risk factors for homelessness among US veterans.

Homelessness among US veterans has been a focus of research for over 3 decades. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, this is the first systematic review to summarize research on risk factors for homelessness among US veterans and to evaluate the evidence for these risk factors. Thirty-one studies published from 1987 to 2014 were divided into 3 categories: more rigorous studies, less rigorous studies, and studies comparing homeless veterans with homeless nonveterans. The strongest and most consistent risk factors were substance use di

Innovative Efforts to Address Homelessness Among Veterans.

Ending homelessness among veterans has been a goal of the Department of Veterans Affairs for some time, and it is now becoming a reality in many communities. Unprecedented strides have been made through the rapid implementation of evidence-based innovations, capacity building, and a comprehensive strategic focus on 4 goals: prevention, moving veterans into permanent housing, providing the population-tailored care and services needed to keep them housed, and providing the supports necessary to allow them to recover and be productive members of their communities.

Implications of psychiatric comorbidity among combat veterans.

Limited research exists regarding the rates of and outcomes associated with psychiatric comorbidity among active duty military personnel. This study investigated the rates of comorbid psychiatric diagnoses among 81,720 U.S. Marines, and assessed the relationships between preexisting comorbid disorders and risk of psychiatric hospitalizations and attrition from service. The study used medical, deployment, and personnel records for all Marines who enlisted between 2002 and 2005. The baseline rate of comorbidity was 1.3% for Marines who deployed during the first term of service, and 6.3% for Mari

Predictors of psychiatric disorders in combat veterans.

BACKGROUND: Most previous research that has examined mental health among Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) combatants has relied on self-report measures to assess mental health outcomes; few studies have examined predictors of actual mental health diagnoses. The objective of this longitudinal investigation was to identify predictors of psychiatric disorders among Marines who deployed to combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 1113 Marines who had deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. Demographic and psychosocial predictor variables from

Post deployment care for returning combat veterans.

Since September 11, 2001, 2.4 million military personnel have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. To date, roughly 1.44 million have separated from the military and approximately 772,000 of these veterans have used VA health care. Combat deployments impact the physical, psychological, and social health of veterans. Given that many veterans are receiving care from non-VA providers, it is important that all community health care workers be familiar with the unique health care needs of this patient population, which include injuries associated with blast exposures (including mild traumatic brain in

Risk factors for homelessness among women veterans.

BACKGROUND: Women veterans are three to four times more likely than non-veteran women to become homeless. However, their risk factors for homelessness have not been defined. METHODS: Case-control study of non-institutionalized homeless women veterans (n533) and age-matched housed women veterans (n=165). Health, health care, and factors associated with homelessness were assessed using multiple logistic regression with a Monte Carlo algorithm to estimate exact standard errors of the model coefficients and p-values. RESULTS: Characteristics associated with homelessness were sexual assault durin

Pain and PTSD symptoms in female veterans.

BACKGROUND: There has been growing empirical examination of the co-occurrence of pain and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and existing evidence suggests that the symptoms associated with each have a close association. To date, however, the association has only been examined within samples of mostly male participants. AIM: In the present study, pain and PTSD symptoms were examined in a sample of 221 female veterans who utilised the VA Healthcare System between 1998 and 1999. METHOD: Women who visited the clinic between 1998 and 1999 were mailed a self-report questionnaire pack

Overrepresentation of women veterans among homeless women.

OBJECTIVES: This study estimated the proportion of veterans among homeless women and their risk of homelessness relative to that of nonveterans. METHODS: Data came from 2 surveys of homeless women (1 clinical and 1 nonclinical) and 1 survey of domiciled women. RESULTS: The proportion of veterans (4.4%, 3.1%) among homeless women was greater than the proportion among domiciled women (1.3%, 1.2%). When we computed odds ratios for being a veteran among homeless women compared with nonhomeless women, homeless women were significantly more likely than nonhomeless women to be veterans. CONCLUSION

Chyluria--experience of Taipei Veterans General Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Chyluria is caused by rupturing of lymphatic varices into the pyelocaliceal system. Although Chyluria is rare in western countries, it is not uncommon in Asia. We would like to present the experience of diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of chyluria in Taipei Veterans General Hospital. METHODS: From 1973 to 1999, a total of 30 patients with chyluria were reviewed. All had the chief complaint of milky white urine passage. They were investigated by multiple workup modalities including computed tomography, intravenous urography, lymphangiography, and cystoscopy. Fifteen cases receiv

Veterans have less age-related cognitive decline.

Military service involves exposure to a number of stresses, both psychological and physical. On the other hand, military personnel generally maintain excellent fitness, and veterans have increased access to education and health care. The overall effect on age-related cognitive decline, whether for good or ill, of having served in the armed forces has not been investigated previously. In this study, we examined a diverse population of 208 veterans and 1,216 civilians followed as part of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study in 1981, 1982, and 1993 to 1996. We examined change in Mini-Mental Sta

Homeless veterans: perspectives on social services use.

This study analyzes the nature and scope of homelessness and issues related to social services use. Using focus group interviews, this exploratory study examined the expressed needs of homeless veterans and the obstacles encountered in obtaining health and human services. Types of problems and social services barriers were developed with exemplars from the interviews. These veterans self-reported a high incidence of health and mental health problems, limited resources, negative public perceptions and treatment, insensitive service providers, dehumanizing policies and procedures, and high level

Women Vietnam veterans. A comparison of studies.

There is strong evidence that many women exposed to war stress have suffered mental health problems related to their experience, and a substantial number continue to have serious emotional, psychosocial, and other readjustment problems that affect their current level of functioning and life satisfaction. The consistent exposure to severe combat casualties, death and dying, workload extremes, personal deprivation, loss, and danger all take a significant emotional toll. These studies underscore the need for affected women to explore their war experiences and associated feelings with mental healt

Strongyloidiasis in Canadian Far East war veterans.

A survey was done of Canadians who had been interned by the Japanese during World War II to assess the prevalence of latent infection with Strongyloides stercoralis in this group. Packages containing three mail-in kits and a questionnaire were sent to 992 men, 694 (70%) of whom responded. Larvae were found in the stool specimens of four of the respondents. Examination of stool specimens after formalin-ether concentration was the most successful method of detecting Strongyloides larvae. The Baermann concentration technique yielded negative results in all four men. Three of the four cases of str

Vietnam and madness: dreams of schizophrenic veterans.

1. Vietnam veterans who still suffer from post-traumatic stress and delayed-stress disorders may respond to psychotherapy. Dreams that have recurred as often as every night for 8 to 15 years may be depotentiated. 2. In the records of the Vietnam veterans whom I have seen on my ward, almost without exception there has been no documentation of the contents, frequency and nature of their dreams and nightmares, and no precise record of their military experience in Vietnam. 3. By creating special group therapy, a Dream Seminar, and by individual analytical psychotherapy, a way has been found to wor

Tailoring Hospice Care to the Veteran Population.

United States Military Veterans are an increasingly elderly population, and more and more veterans are choosing hospice care at the end of life. These veterans, particularly if they served in combat, can bring unique management challenges and opportunities to a hospice team. This review highlights the physical and psychosocial traumas experienced by many veterans, and discusses how these issues can affect their hospice care. Traumatic injury-related issues such as chronic pain, neuropathic pain, insomnia, and chronic headaches can worsen for veterans at the end of life, and the psychological s
