First isolation and identification of Brucella microti in sheep and goats: new insights and implications for veterinary medicine.

Many species from the genus Brucella are causative agents of the bacterial zoonosis brucellosis. Until recently, it was generally believed that these bacteria exhibit strict host specificity; however, recent findings suggest otherwise. Brucella microti is an atypical Brucella species, no threat to humans, with a broad host spectrum, primarily found in wildlife and rodents, and is the only Brucella species isolated from soil, aquatic environments, and frogs, suggesting its environmental persistence and adaptability to diverse ecological niches. Despite its environmental resilience and wide host

The artifact of cerebellar granule cell layer conglutination in veterinary medicine: a brief historical perspective and review.

Cerebellar granule cell layer conglutination is a tissue artifact associated with postmortem autolysis that causes cerebellar granule cell changes once thought to be caused by degeneration and necrosis. Granule cell layer conglutination has been reported mainly in humans and cattle and rarely in other animal species, but its frequency remains vastly unknown in veterinary medicine, mostly because this postmortem change is typically not recorded in autopsy reports. Pathology trainees should be aware of autolytic tissue changes that may mimic pathologic changes in the CNS, particularly when those

Zoonotic Diseases and Phytochemical Medicines for Microbial Infections in Veterinary Science: Current State and Future Perspective.

Diseases caused by bacterial infections in small-scale and industrial livestock are becoming serious global health concern in veterinary science. Zoonotic bacteria, including Staphylococcus, Campylobacter, and Bartonella species, that infect animals and humans cause various illnesses, such as fever, diarrhea, and related complications. Bacterial diseases in animals can be treated with various classes of antibiotics, including fluoroquinolones, beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, and macrolides. However, the overuse and misuse of antibiotics have led to drug resistance in infectious agents, e.g., me

Robert Koch and the invention of the carrier state: tropical medicine, veterinary infections and epidemiology around 1900.

This paper reassesses Robert Koch's work on tropical infections of humans and cattle as being inspired by an underlying interest in epidemiology. Such an interest was developed from the early 1890s when it became clear that an exclusive focus on pathogens was insufficient as an approach to explain the genesis and dynamics of epidemics. Koch, who had failed to do so before, now highlighted differences between infection and disease and described the role of various sub-clinical states of disease in the propagation and--consequently--in the control of epidemics. Studying pathologies of men and ca

History of veterinary medicine in Zimbabwe. Part II. Creating awareness, strengthening extension and looking into the future.

Livestock farming was going on in the then Southern Rhodesia, before the advent of colonization in 1890. However, history of conventional veterinary medicine dates back only to the arrival of the Pioneer Column, 115 years ago. At that time, veterinary infrastructure and staffing was poor relative to size of the country, in terms of livestock census. Despite that, few veterinarians on the ground managed to eradicate rinderpest (RD), rabies for 37 years, contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), glanders, epizootic lymphangitis, East coast fever (ECF) and contagious epivaginitis. However, the 19

[Use of the eye-derived growth factor in the treatment of ulcer of the cornea. A veterinary medicine study in the dog].

A growth factor purified from adult bovine retina and named Eye Derived Growth Factor (EDGF) has been shown to stimulate proliferation of target cells in vitro and in vivo, and to increase the rate of wound healing of experimentally induced corneal ulcers in rabbits. In the present report, dogs (mainly boxers) with chronic recurrent ulcers resistant to various treatments, including chloramphenicol and reputed wound healing drugs, were treated by morning and evening instillations of drops containing 10 stimulation units of EDGF in phosphate buffer saline. Stable healing of the ulcer was obtaine

[Tomography in veterinary medicine. Possibilities for the application of this x-ray technic demonstrated on the spinal column of a dog].

After a short introduction of theoretical principles of tomography, the advantages of this technique--especially the representation of the dog's spinal column--are discussed with five case histories. This technique allows to produce isolated pictures of special parts of the spinal column which may be superpositioned by other body parts like: atlantooccipitalregion (especially dens axis), caudal cervical spine, thoracical spine and lumbosacral region. Particularly the evaluation of the intervertebral spaces, the small vertebral joints and the contours and structures of the vertebrae is enhanced

A Practical Approach to a Realistic Problem: Rapid Blueprinting a Progress Test for Veterinary Medicine in North America.

A blueprint is a template for an assessment that outlines the knowledge, skills, attributes, species, and systems to be assessed and the respective weightings (percentage of the assessment) for the key content areas. This is a foundational step in building content validity for an assessment method. The rapid blueprinting process is reported to be a quick and cost-effective approach to developing a blueprint that consists of two phases. The first is an in-person advisory committee meeting consisting of educational experts and key stakeholders (10-15 people) to build the framework of the assessm

Autonomous Farmers Use of Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicines in Pasture-Based Dairy Goat Systems.

Consumers expect ruminants to graze outdoors and flocks to be of a reasonable size. Dairy goats can be kept outdoors (natural) or indoors. There are few pasture-grazed-system goat farms. The farms we studied in the centre-west of France were either organic or conventional, and all used pastures and tended to meet consumer demand for naturalness. We obtained information through semi-directed interviews. Dairy goats are susceptible to gastrointestinal infections when using pastures and this was one of the main health problems mentioned by organic farmers. There are a very limited number of medic

Pimobendan controlled release guar gum printlets: Tailoring drug doses for personalised veterinary medicines.

Treating chronic heart diseases in dogs is challenging due to variations in mass within and between species. Pimobendan (PBD), a veterinary drug only, is prescribed in specific cases of chronic heart disease in dogs and is available on the market in only a few different doses. Furthermore, the therapy itself is challenging due to the large size of the chewable tablets and the requirement for twice-daily administration. The development of customised and on-demand PBD medicines by three-dimensional (3D) printing has been proposed to circumvent these disadvantages. In this study, we designed cont

Pesticide, Veterinary Medicines, and Microplastics: Bipartite and Tripartite Interactions Drive the Transformation of Albendazole and Pyraclostrobin in Agricultural Soils.

Soil constitutes a major sink for microplastics (MPs). In agricultural soils, microplastics co-occur with pesticides and veterinary medicines like anthelminthics (AHs). Little is known regarding the influence of microplastics on the dissipation of these organic pollutants. We hypothesized (a) that microplastics due to their hydrophobic surfaces would affect the dissipation of the anthelminthic albendazole (ABZ) and the fungicide pyraclostrobin (PYR), and (b) the outcome of this interaction will vary depending on the type (PBAT-based, Starch-based, and LDPE-based) and the concentration (0.1 and

Environmental contamination by veterinary medicinal products and their implications in the conservation of the endangered Pyrenean Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus aquitanicus).

The endangered Pyrenean Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus aquitanicus) inhabits perennial forests of the Pyrenees (Spain, France and Andorre). Feces of domestic animals (e.g., horses and cattle) are often found in this species' habitat as evidence of land use overlapping, especially during spring and summer. As a result, pharmaceutical residues found in feces of these domestic ungulates may be absorbed by plants and insects that are part of the diet of Pyrenean Capercaillies (e.g., blueberries [Vaccinium uliginosum, Vaccinium myrtillus], red wood ants [Formica rufa]). Based on the absence of data

Anatomical Variations of the Blood Vascular System in Veterinary Medicine. The Internal Iliac Artery of the Dog. Part Two.

The aim of this study was to investigate the variability of the internal pudendal artery. Two hundred and thirty-two pelvic halves from 116 adult dogs were examined. Twenty-six anatomical variations were found, thirteen occurring in more than 5% of the dogs. Anatomical variations were grouped in relation to the origin of the prostatic/vaginal arteries, middle rectal artery, urethral artery, ventral perineal and caudal rectal arteries. The chi-squared test was used to analyse differences in sex, side of the body, profile and size, and the results were considered statistically significant when P
