Vibrio vulnificus is found globally in marine coastal waters. Infection with this organism, via ingestion of raw shellfish or exposure to marine water, can cause necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis, which have high mortality and short latency. In Japan, many cases have been reported since 1980, mainly from hospitals in western prefectures. However, because of the sporadic nature of infection outbreaks, a thorough epidemiologic survey has not been done. We studied the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of Vibrio vulnificus infections reported in Japan from 1975 to 2005. We identified 185

Relationships between Vibrio cholerae of different origin and some serogroups with green algae Scenedesmus quadricauda in mineral medium at two temperatures have been experimentally studied. Differences in the relationships of various strains with green algae under the above-mentioned experimental conditions have been established. The study has shown that a decrease in the concentration and the death of vct+ and vct- vibrios of all strains under study occur in the linear phase of the development of algae. 3 V. cholerae strains, serogroups O139 (vct+) and O50 (vct-), have been shown to be capab

To provide the base of manufacturing V. cholera O139 subunit vaccine, purification and identification methods of V. cholera O139 Toxin-coregulated pili (TCP) were studied. The results showed the optimal expressing condition of TCP was in AKI or CFA medium, at 30 C for 24-36 h with stationary cultivation. The molecular weight of the TCP subunit protein measured by sodium dodecyl sulfate-poly acrylamide gel electrophoresis was about 20.5 kd. By using mouse anti-TCP monoclone antibody and sheep anti-mouse IgG-HRP antibody, the TCP was confirmed by dot blot immunoassay. Rabbit immune serum of TCP

The results of the work on obtaining monoclonal antibodies (McAb) to hemolysin of noncholerigenic vibrios and the study of hemolysin preparations and Vibrio cholerae strains are presented. As established with the use of McAb, hemolysin preparations proved to be complex compounds containing, in addition to hemolytic protein, some lipopolysaccharide determinants, which had not been detected with the use of traditional biochemical tests. The study revealed that V. cholerae non-01 and V. cholerae eltor hemolysins have common antigenic determinants, which was confirmed by the data of literature on

A 66-year-old male with chronic alcoholic liver injury was admitted on July 27, 1986 to our hospital with complaints of high fever, convulsion and skin erythema. He had consumed raw fish 3 days before, and had a scratch wound over the right arm and left leg because he had slipped in a small stream in the woods the day before admission. He was already in shock state with sepsis of V. vulnificus and DIC on admission. Although the treatment with ABPC, CP, CAZ, MINO for sepsis, and Heparin & Antithrombin III for DIC was immediately begun, he died only 10 hours after admission. On autopsy, the skin

Vibriosis and Streptococcosis, caused by Vibrio and Streptococcus species, are major bacterial diseases affecting Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) aquaculture in Vietnam. In the current study, V. harveyi, V. vulnificus and S. iniae were isolated with high relevance. A trivalent vaccine was developed using formalin-inactivated representative strains (V. harveyi IVRD 105, V. vulnificus IVRD 2.3, S. iniae IVRD B1) formulated with Montanide ISA 763 VG adjuvant and administered via intraperitoneal injection. Vaccinated fish exhibited significantly elevated serum antibody levels starting from 1 week

An increasing number of evidences have shown that invertebrate taxa can be primed to produce immune memory to resist the secondary infection of pathogens, which was considered as a viable option to protect invertebrates from pathogens. In this work, we compared the protective effect of several different immune priming methods on the Vibrio alginolyticus secondary infection of the Crassostrea gigas. The results showed that C. gigas primed with live V. alginolyticus had higher ROS level, which led to hemocytes necrosis and higher mortality rate in the later stage. Low-dose of formalin-inactivate

Vibrio vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus in the estuarine-marine environment are of human health significance and may be increasing in pathogenicity and abundance. Vibrio illness originating from dermal contact with Vibrio laden waters or through ingestion of seafood originating from such waters can cause deleterious health effects, particularly if the strains involved are resistant to clinically important antibiotics. The purpose of this study was to evaluate antimicrobial susceptibility among these pathogens. Surface-water samples were collected from three sites of recreational and commerci

Vibrio vulnificus is a highly virulent gram-negative aquatic bacterium found in warm brackish waters and in molluscum shellfish worldwide that can cause sepsis after ingestion of raw oysters or undercooked molluscum shellfish as well as deadly skin and soft-tissue infections from immersion in contaminated seawater. Populations at a higher risk of infections are men older than 60 years with diabetes mellitus, liver cirrhosis, renal disease, or elevated iron levels and those who are immunocompromised. Three severe syndromes caused by V. vulnificus are gastroenteritis, primary septicemia, and wou

Vibrio vulnificus (V. vulnificus) is a Gram-negative, halophilic bacillus known for causing severe infections such as gastroenteritis, necrotizing fasciitis, and septic shock, with mortality rates exceeding 50% in high-risk individuals. Transmission occurs primarily through the consumption of contaminated seafood, exposure of open wounds to infected water, or, in rare cases, insect bites. The bacterium thrives in warm, brackish waters with high salinity levels, and its prevalence is rising due to the effects of climate change, including warming ocean temperatures and expanding coastal habitats

The motility and chemotaxis of Vibrio cholerae, the bacterial pathogen responsible for cholera, play crucial roles in both environmental survival and infection. Understanding their molecular mechanisms is therefore essential not only for fundamental biology but also for infection control and therapeutic development. The bacterium's sheathed, polar flagellum-its motility organelle-is powered by a sodium-driven motor. This motor's rotation is regulated by the chemotaxis (Che) signaling system, with a histidine kinase, CheA, and a response regulator, CheY, serving as the central processing unit.

Cholera is a severe diarrheal disease caused by the aquatic bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Interestingly, to date, only one major clade has emerged to cause pandemic disease in humans: the clade that encompasses the strains from the O1 and O139 serogroups. In this chapter, we provide a comprehensive perspective on the virulence factors and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) associated with the emergence of pandemic V. cholerae strains and highlight novel findings such as specific genomic background or interactions between MGEs that explain their confined distribution. Finally, we discuss pandemic chol

Vibrio cholerae (Vc) causes cholera disease. Vc contamination is widely found in water and aquatic products, and therefore is a serious food safety concern, especially for the seafood industry. In this paper, we attempted the rapid detection of V. cholerae. Nine rounds of in vitro selection using an unmodified DNA library were successfully performed to find specific DNAzymes of Vc. Their activity was evaluated based on a fluorescence assay and gel electrophoresis. Finally, a DNAzyme (named DVc1) with good activity and specificity with a detection limit of 7.2 × 103 CFU/mL of Vc was selected. A

In Haiti in 2017, the prevalence of serum vibriocidal antibody titers against Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1 among adults was 12.4% in Cerca-la-Source and 9.54% in Mirebalais, suggesting a high recent prevalence of infection. Improved surveillance programs to monitor cholera and guide public health interventions in Haiti are necessary.

Research into the evolution and pathogenesis of Vibrio cholerae has benefited greatly from the generation of high-throughput sequencing data to drive molecular analyses. The steady accumulation of these data sets now provides a unique opportunity for in silico hypothesis generation via coexpression analysis. Here, we leverage all published V. cholerae RNA sequencing data, in combination with select data from other platforms, to generate a gene coexpression network that validates known gene interactions and identifies novel genetic partners across the entire V. cholerae genome. This network pro

The bipartite genome of Vibrio cholerae is divided into two circular non-homologous chromosomes, which harbor several genetic elements like phages, plasmids, transposons, integrative conjugative elements, and pathogenic islands that encode functions responsible for disease development, antimicrobial resistance, and subsistence in hostile environments. These elements are highly heterogeneous, mobile in nature, and encode their own mobility functions or exploit host-encoded enzymes for intra- and inter-cellular movements. The key toxin of V. cholerae responsible for the life-threatening diarrhea

Vibrio cholerae is a natural inhabitant of aquatic ecosystems. Some strains of V. cholerae can colonize the human host and cause cholera, a profuse watery diarrhea. The major pathogenicity factors and virulence regulators of V. cholerae are either encoded in mobile genetic elements acquired in the environment (e.g. pathogenicity islands or lysogenic phages) or in the core genome. Several lines of evidence indicate that the emergence of numerous virulence traits of V. cholerae occurred in its natural environment due to biotic and abiotic pressures. Here, we discuss the connection between the hu

Many bacteria are resistant to killing (tolerant) by typically bactericidal antibiotics due to their ability to counteract drug-induced cell damage. Vibrio cholerae, the cholera agent, displays an unusually high tolerance to diverse inhibitors of cell wall synthesis. Exposure to these agents, which in other bacteria leads to lysis and death, results in a breakdown of the cell wall and subsequent sphere formation in V. cholerae Spheres readily recover to rod-shaped cells upon antibiotic removal, but the mechanisms mediating the recovery process are not well characterized. Here, we found that th

Vibrio alginolyticus causes soft tissue and bloodstream infection; little systematically collected clinical and epidemiological information is available. In the USA, V. alginolyticus infections are reported to the Cholera and Other Vibrio Illness Surveillance system. Using data from 1988 to 2012, we categorised infections using specimen source and exposure history, analysed case characteristics, and calculated incidence rates using US Census Bureau data. Most (96%) of the 1331 V. alginolyticus infections were from coastal states. Infections of the skin and ear were most frequent (87%); ear inf
