Since Jacobaeus performed the first thoracoscopy to explore pleural space and mechanically broke pleural adhesions to facilitate the collapse therapy for pulmonary tuberculosis in 1910, numerous thoracic surgeons have been attempting this technique as a means of accomplishing many intrathoracic procedures previously done through open thoracotomy. As the refinement of video technology has advanced, thoracoscopic surgery has played a very important role in thoracic surgery especially since the early 1990s. Because the advantages of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for patients include low po

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cardiac resynchronization via left ventricular or biventricular pacing is an option for selected patients with ventricular systolic dysfunction and widened QRS complex. Stimulation through a coronary vein is the technique of choice for left ventricular pacing, but this approach results in a failure rate of approximately 8%. We describe our initial experience with minimally invasive surgical implantation of left ventricular epicardial leads using video-assisted thoracoscopy.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: A total of 14 patients with congestive heart failure, NYHA functional cl

Minimally invasive procedures have been used to treat various diseases in medicine. Great improvements in these techniques have provided intraventricular, transnasal and more recently cisternal intracranial accesses used to treat different conditions. Endoscopic approaches have been proposed for the treatment of disk herniation or degenerative disease of the spine with great progress in the recent years. However the spinal cord has not yet been reached by video-assisted procedures. This article describes our recent experience in procedures to approach the spinal cord itself in order to provide

BACKGROUND: Although videolaryngoscopy has been proposed as a default technique for tracheal intubation in children, published evidence on universal videolaryngoscopy implementation programmes is scarce. We aimed to determine if universal, first-choice videolaryngoscopy reduces the incidence of restricted glottic views and to determine the diagnostic performance of the Cormack and Lehane classification to discriminate between easy and difficult videolaryngoscopic tracheal intubations in children.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study within a structured universal videolaryng

OBJECTIVE: : Intrathoracic thyroid goiter is an uncommon condition. Most goiters are found in the superior and anterior mediastinum, which can be removed either through a cervical approach or through a combined cervicotomy and sternotomy approach. Extension of the goiter into the posterior mediastinum is even less common. Transcervival approach to thyroid goiters in the posterior mediastinum can be difficult, necessitating a thoracotomy, with its associated morbidity.
METHODS: : A 69-year-old patient underwent robotic assisted minimally invasive procedure, with the daVinci surgical robotic sy

PURPOSE: In this narrative review, we aim to give an update on the anatomic fundamentals of endoscopic assisted surgery to the craniocervical junction (transnasal, transoral and transcervical), and to report on the available clinical results.
METHODS: A non-systematic review and reporting on the anatomical and clinical results of endoscopic assisted approaches to the craniocervical junction (CVJ) is performed.
RESULTS: Pure endonasal and cervical endoscopic approaches still have some disadvantages, including the learning curve and the lack of 3-dimensional perception of the surgical field. E

BACKGROUND: Air embolism is a relatively rare complication of thoracoscopic surgery.
METHODS: Open supraclavicular sympathectomy was indicated to overcome the risk of re-embolization. A novel video-assisted technique was performed. conclusions: The previously prevalent open supraclavicular sympathectomy is a good choice for avoiding air embolism. Laparoscopic instrumentation and technology can be used to improve open procedures, especially when exposure and visibility are limited. Sometimes we should remember to use the experience of our teachers.

The incidence of tracheal laceration is 1 of 20,000 intubations. The most frequently affected area is the posterior tracheal wall (membranous). Risk factors include several forced attempts at intubation, inexperience of the clinician, tracheal introducers (guidewires) that protrude beyond the tip of the tube, and emergency procedures. Surgical treatment of tracheal lacerations can be by a transtracheal suture technique or a right thoracotomy. Using the concept of minimally invasive surgical procedures, we reported the treatment of 2 patients with tracheal lacerations greater than 5 cm in the d

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: Minimally invasive mitral valve surgery was introduced into clinical practice during the mid 1990s. The clinical benefits of the technique, namely a reduction of surgical trauma, increased patient comfort and shorter hospital stay, are achieved by using a video-assisted, minithoracotomy approach rather than a standard median sternotomy. Herein is described the authors' experience with video-assisted mitral surgery through a micro-access.
METHODS: Between September 2003 and September 2006, 100 patients (mean age 65.7 years; range: 16-84 years; 29 aged >75 years

INTRODUCTION: While mediastinoscopy is considered the gold standard for mediastinal node sampling, it is to some extent being superseded by endobronchial ultrasound. The objective of this study was to evaluate the different practices in our center regarding mediastinal lymph node sampling in lung cancer patients.
METHODS: Data were collected from patients having undergone mediastinal lymph node sampling by video-assisted-mediastinoscopy (VM) or by endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) in our center between August 2020 and July 2023. The modalities of the two procedures and their diagnostic accuracy

Primary coiling of large intracranial aneurysms with complex morphology, such as multiple lobes and a wide neck, is challenging. In these aneurysms, achieving adequate intra-aneurysmal packing density while preventing coil herniation into the parent vessel may be difficult with traditional coiling technique. In the setting of acute aneurysm rupture, alternative treatment options such as stent-assisted coiling or flow diversion may not be feasible due to the need for dual antiplatelets. In this video, we demonstrate the use of a dual microcatheter technique to achieve adequate packing density w

Independent subsuperior segmentectomy (S*) via uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has rarely been reported. We describe our modified technique of performing simplified left subsuperior segmentectomy for a lung nodule, via 2-cm uniportal VATS. The uniportal approach was different from the traditional approach made by blunt separation into the thorax without electrocautery. Our modified technique minimizes damage to the intercostal nerves and muscles. We also simplified the subsuperior segmentectomy procedure according to the findings of three-dimensional (3D) computed tomogra

BACKGROUND: The arguments for applying minimally invasive techniques are, besides cosmetic results, reduced access trauma and less postoperative pain. In thyroid surgery, cosmetic aspects are gaining importance. Whether minimally invasive endoscopic thyroid surgery is less painful has not been shown yet.
METHOD: In this study, we analyse the outcome of 246 patients who underwent cervical endoscopic video-assisted thyroid surgery (CEViTS) regarding the surgery itself, their postoperative pain and satisfaction with the procedure.
RESULTS: CEViTS is routinely performed in our hospital. In this

Tracheobronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a rare malignancy characterized by indolent growth and often delayed clinical presentation. While surgical resection remains the definitive treatment with excellent long-term outcomes, the surgical approach continues to evolve. While traditional techniques include thoracotomy or sternotomy, robotic-assisted surgery is emerging as a compelling alternative, offering enhanced three-dimensional visualization, superior instrument precision, and improved ergonomic control for complex airway reconstructions. This video tutorial details a robotic approach f

BACKGROUND: Since robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) has nowadays become widely accepted world-wide, there needs to be an agreement on the most efficient surgical techniques. This should be based on the video-anatomy of the prostate and a summary of the actual literature.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using video material taken during RALP-procedures performed by the same surgeon (J.R.), the anatomical details of different surgical techniques and operative steps are shown based on the anatomy of the male pelvis applying the standard nomenclature. This was supplemented by a systematic li
