Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Tools in Very-Low Vision: Ready for Use in Trials?

Traditional endpoints assessing visual function are limited by their responsiveness to interventions restoring or maintaining vision. An alternative concept is assessing instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). Herein, we review all available vision-specific IADL instruments relevant for vision restoration trials and report data for the most promising instrument. Six relevant instruments exist: The Low Vision Functional Status Evaluation (LVFSE), Timed IADL (TIADL), Melbourne Low-Vision Activities of Daily Living Index (MLVAI), Assessment of Disability Related to Vision (ADREV), Functio

Neural correlates of impaired vision in adolescents born extremely preterm and/or extremely low birthweight.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents born extremely preterm (EP; <28 weeks' gestation) and/or extremely low birthweight (ELBW; <1000 g) experience high rates of visual impairments, however the potential neural correlates of visual impairments in EP/ELBW adolescents require further investigation. This study aimed to: 1) compare optic radiation and primary visual cortical structure between EP/ELBW adolescents and normal birthweight controls; 2) investigate associations between perinatal factors and optic radiation and primary visual cortical structure in EP/ELBW adolescents; 3) investigate associations betwe

Hyperornithinaemia and gyrate atrophy of the retina: improvement of vision during treatment with a low-arginine diet.

A 15-year-old patient with hyperornithinaemia (0.6--1.2 mmol/l) and gyrate atrophy of the retina was given a low-arginine diet to reduce plasma ornithine to a concentration (0.15--0.25 mmol/l) near the normal range. After five weeks of treatment, there was improvement in the visual function of one eye which had been severely impaired without improvement for 3 years. This improved visual function was maintained until compliance with the diet deteriorated at eight months, after which visual function regressed towards pretreatment status. Overrestriction of dietary arginine produced hyperammonaem

eHealth Literacy, Physical Activity Engagement, and Depressive Symptoms in Women With Blindness and Low Vision.

BACKGROUND: Women with blindness and low vision (WWBLV) experience significant health disparities, yet the relationships among eHealth literacy, physical activity engagement, and depressive symptoms in this population remain poorly understood. PURPOSE: This study investigated the relationships among eHealth literacy, physical activity engagement, and depressive symptoms among WWBLV, with particular focus on whether eHealth literacy moderates the relationship between physical activity engagement and depressive symptoms. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 1,668 WWBLV a

Cost analysis of low vision care rehabilitative services from the perspectives of patients in India.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Low vision rehabilitation services are important for supporting daily functioning and quality of life. Affordability remains an important determinant of access. BACKGROUND: In low- and middle-income countries, such as India, access to low-vision rehabilitation remains limited, often due to out-of-pocket costs, despite its functional benefits. METHODS: This retrospective study analysed electronic medical records of patients attending the low vision clinic of a tertiary eye care hospital in India between November 2021 and April 2022. Patient-incurred costs were calculated f

Pinhole amniotic membrane for peripheral corneal defects in patients with a single eye or low vision.

AIMS: To describe the efficacy of a new pinhole amniotic membrane placement technique in cases of peripheral epithelial defects in patients with a single eye or low vision in the contrye. METHODS: This technique is based on a small central hole done with a dermatological 3 to 4 mm punch (according to pupillary diameter in mesoscopic conditions) and a continuous suture in the perilimbal cornea to fix the amniotic membrane. We performed this technique in 6 patients. Patients were followed clinical and photographically. RESULTS: No changes in the visual acuity before and after the surgery were

Human Anatomy: Teaching-Learning Experience of a Support Teacher and a Student with Low Vision and Blindness.

In Brazil, a federal law ensures that all students with disabilities are entitled to enrollment in higher education institutions. Higher courses in human anatomy stand out for their complexity in both theoretical and practical contents. Therefore, adaptation is required to accommodate students with special educational needs. This study aimed to describe the experience of a Support Teacher in the development of inclusive pedagogical practices for the discipline of Human Anatomy offered in the physiotherapy course for a student with low vision and blindness. The challenges and learning difficult

Validation of Mobility of Pedestrians with Low Vision Using Graphic Floor Signs and Voice Guides.

Some people with low vision or elderly persons tend to walk while watching a nearby floor, therefore, they often overlook or hard to read suspended signs. In this study, we propose two kinds of voice guides, and an experiment is conducted by participants with low vision using these voice guides and graphic floor signs in order to investigate effectiveness of these combinations. In clock position method (CP), each direction of near facilities are described in using an analogy of a 12-hour clock. Meanwhile, in numbering method (NU), near facilities are put the number in clockwise order, however,

Isolated foveal hypoplasia with secondary nystagmus and low vision is associated with a homozygous SLC38A8 mutation.

Foveal hypoplasia, always accompanied by nystagmus, is found as part of the clinical spectrum of various eye disorders such as aniridia, albinism and achromatopsia. However, the molecular basis of isolated autosomal recessive foveal hypoplasia is yet unknown. Individuals of apparently unrelated non consanguineous Israeli families of Jewish Indian (Mumbai) ancestry presented with isolated foveal hypoplasia associated with congenital nystagmus and reduced visual acuity. Genome-wide homozygosity mapping followed by fine mapping defined a 830 Kb disease-associated locus (LOD score 3.5). Whole-exom
