OBJECTIVE: Optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH), the congenital underdevelopment of the optic nerve, is an increasing cause of visual impairment and is associated with pituitary dysfunction. Past studies have focused on the relationship between ONH, pituitary deficiencies, and brain imaging. However, recent studies have demonstrated the true risk for hypopituitarism lies with the presence or absence of ONH, irrespective of midline brain findings. This study reviewed the relationship between the health of the optic nerve (visual acuity) and pituitary gland (number and age of development of pituitary de

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated the associations of clinical and demographic characteristics with visual acuity (VA) with over 5 years in a subspecialty noninfectious uveitis population.
METHODS: Retrospective data from 5,530 noninfectious uveitis patients were abstracted by expert reviewers, and contemporaneous associations of VA with demographic and clinical factors were modeled.
RESULTS: Patients were a median of 41 years old, 65% female, and 73% white. Eyes diagnosed ≥5 years prior to cohort entry had worse VA (-1.2 lines) than those diagnosed <6 months prior, and eyes with cataract surgery p

IMPORTANCE: Corneal opacity is a leading cause of visual impairment worldwide; however, the specific features of corneal scars, which decrease visual acuity, have not been well characterized.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate which features of a postfungal keratitis corneal scar contribute to decreased visual acuity after an episode of infectious keratitis and evaluate whether any corneal features may be used as outcomes for clinical trials.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this ancillary, prospective cross-sectional study, a subset of study participants treated for fungal keratitis (n = 71) as

BACKGROUND: Albinism patients have poor visual acuity in addition to hypopigmentation. Their foveal anatomy is abnormal, but correlation with function is incompletely understood. This study correlates retinal electrophysiology, visual acuity and optical coherence tomography (OCT) anatomy in albinism patients and compares with age-similar controls.
METHODS: Institutional Review Board approval was obtained (IRB# 201408782). Patients were recruited from clinical practice. Inclusion criteria were at least three clinical features of albinism including iris transillumination, nystagmus, fundus hypo

Introduction: Patients suffering from bilateral vestibular hypofunction (BVH) often experience ataxia as well as visual instability. Even though progress has been made in vestibular testing, insights regarding vestibular deficit in BVH remain incomplete since no method allows evaluation of frequency ranges of vestibular sensors in a continuous way. The aim of our study was to give a detailed description of the level of vestibular deficit in different ranges of vestibular stimulation and an exhaustive evaluation of the functional impact including dynamic visual acuity (DVA) in a cohort of BVH p

Dynamic visual acuity (DVA) may be a useful indicator of the function of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) but most DVA tests involve active head motion in the yaw plane. During gait the passive, vertical VOR may be more relevant and passive testing would be less likely to elicit compensatory strategies. The goal of this study was to determine if testing dynamic visual acuity during passive vertical motion of the subject would differentiate normal subjects from patients with known vestibular disorders. Subjects, normals and patients who had been diagnosed with either unilateral vestibular weak

CLINICAL CASE: We present a case study of a patient with sudden visual loss, who had 20/200 visual acuity and macular edema at initial evaluation. Angiographies showed no interruption of vascular flow and in the visual field a central island of vision in the inferior hemifield was identified, surrounded by absolute scotoma.
DISCUSSION: Clinical aspect at the initial evaluation required a differential diagnosis between retinal and neural disease. The clinical approach used to integrate the retrospective diagnosis of central retinal artery occlusion is presented, and an explanation is proposed

Contrast sensitivity is a person's ability to identify an object from its background. Patients with normal visual acuity can have reduced contrast sensitivity and may experience trouble in identifying objects at night or moving around in dimly lit places. Contrast sensitivity has never been studied in leprosy patients having normal visual acuity. This study aimed to determine if contrast sensitivity is impaired in leprosy patients who have normal visual acuity and to identify possible associations with demographic, leprosy and ocular characteristics.
