Bilateral neuroinflammatory processes in visual pathways induced by unilateral ocular hypertension in the rat.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness in the world. The major risk factor is elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) leading to progressive retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death from the optic nerve (ON) to visual pathways in the brain. Glaucoma has been reported to share mechanisms with neurodegenerative disorders. We therefore hypothesize that neuroinflammatory mechanisms in central visual pathways may contribute to the spread of glaucoma disease. The aim of the present study was to analyze the neuroinflammation processes that occur from the pathological retina

Parallel feedback pathways in visual cortex of cats revealed through a modified rabies virus.

The visual cortex of cats is highly evolved. Analogously to the brains of primates, large numbers of visual areas are arranged hierarchically and can be parsed into separate dorsal and ventral streams for object recognition and visuospatial representation. Within early primate visual areas, V1 and V2, and to a lesser extent V3, the two streams are relatively segregated and relayed in parallel to higher order cortex, although there is some evidence suggesting an alignment of V2 and V3 to one stream over the other. For cats, there is no evidence of anatomical segregation in areas 18 and 19, the

Increased levels of 5-HT1A receptor binding in ventral visual pathways in Parkinson's disease.

Visual hallucinations are common in advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). The pathophysiology of visual hallucinations may involve enhanced serotonergic neurotransmission. The atypical antipsychotics clozapine and quetiapine, which have affinity for 5-HT(2A) and 5-HT(1A) receptors, are effective against visual hallucinations in PD. 5-HT(2A) receptors are increased in ventral visual pathways in PD patients with visual hallucinations, and we hypothesized that 5-HT(1A) receptors were also involved in visual hallucinations in PD. Autoradiographic binding using [(3) H]-WAY-100,635 and NAN-190 was perf

A possible selective impairment of magnocellular function in compression of the anterior visual pathways.

Two parallel visual systems, the magnocellular (M) and parvocellular (P) pathways, originate from different types of retinal ganglion cells, and are known to be segregated in different portions of the pregeniculate visual pathways. Their relative contribution to two main cortical streams, dorsal and ventral, is still under discussion, but it is reasonable to suppose that selective damage to the M or P subcortical system might interfere with specific aspects of processing within one or the other cortical system. Using two different apparent-motion tasks, we compared the performance of patients

Pattern visual evoked potentials in Japanese patients with multiple sclerosis without history of visual pathway involvement.

A delay of the peak latency of the pattern visual evoked cortical potentials (pVEP) is accepted as one of the paraclinical evidence for a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pVEPs in Japanese patients with MS without a history of visual pathway involvement. We studied the medical records of 29 MS patients without any history of visual pathway involvement, and with visual acuity correctable to > or = 20/20. The Goldmann visual fields, pupillary light reflexes, and optic disks were normal in all. pVEPs elicited by 3 rev/s (transient) and 12 rev/s (

Transcorneal Electrical Stimulation Modulates Visual Pathway Function in Mice.

Due to its ability to modulate neuronal activity, electrical stimulation of the eye may be a promising therapy for preserving or restoring vision. To investigate how electrical currents can influence visual function, Transcorneal Electrical Stimulation (TES) was tested on both female and male C57BL/6 mice to evaluate its neuromodulatory effect from the retina to the cerebral cortex through visual evoked potential (VEP) and electroretinogram (ERG) recording. VEP or ERG was acquired before (baseline), immediately (t0), after 5 min (t5), and 10 min (t10) of sham (i.e., no stimulation) or TES appl

Current opinion neurology: visual pathway biomarkers in Alzheimer's disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The incidence of Alzheimer's disease is increasing. Premortem diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease is now possible but require invasive and expensive testing such as PET amyloid beta binding and/or spinal fluid amyloid beta levels. There is a great need for minimally invasive and inexpensive biomarkers to allow for early diagnosis and intervention. RECENT FINDINGS: There has been a large volume of literature assessing ocular biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease. Much of the research to date has significant limitations, including sample size, variable diagnostic criteria for Alzhe

Assessing visual modulation along the human subcortical auditory pathway.

Experience of the world is inherently multisensory. It has been suggested that audiovisual modulation occurs as early as subcortical auditory stages. However, this was based on the frequency-following response, a measure recently found to be significantly generated from cortical sources. It therefore remains unclear whether subcortical auditory processing can indeed be modulated by visual information. We aimed to trace visual modulation along the auditory pathway by comparing auditory brainstem response (ABR) and middle-latency response (MLR) between unimodal auditory and multimodal audiovisua

Aberrant visual pathway development in albinism: From retina to cortex.

Albinism refers to a group of genetic abnormalities in melanogenesis that are associated neuronal misrouting through the optic chiasm. We perform quantitative assessment of visual pathway structure and function in 23 persons with albinism (PWA) and 20 matched controls using optical coherence tomography (OCT), volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion tensor imaging and visual evoked potentials (VEP). PWA had a higher streamline decussation index (percentage of total tractography streamlines decussating at the chiasm) compared with controls (Z = -2.24, p = .025), and streamline dec
