Visual depth perception in normal and deprived rats: effects of environmental enrichment.

A proper maturation of stereoscopic functions requires binocular visual experience and early disruption of sensory-driven activity can result in long-term or even permanent visual function impairment. Amblyopia is one paradigmatic case of visual system disorder, with early conditions of functional imbalance between the two eyes leading to severe deficits of visual acuity and depth-perception abilities. In parallel to the reduction of neural plasticity levels, the brain potential for functional recovery declines with age. Recent evidence has challenged this traditional view and experimental par

A prospective genetic marker of the visual-perception disorder Meares-Irlen syndrome.

Prior investigations of scotopic sensitivity or Meares-Irlen syndrome have identified several features also found in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome, and a subtype of dyslexia in which visual recognition is the primary deficit. In particular, anomalies in lipid metabolism, including low essential fatty acid status and decreased serum cholesterol, have been identified in all three disorders. Genetic expression of the transportermolecule apolipoprotein B-100 (APOB) has been correlated with abnormal lipid metabolism, particularly in relation to levels of cholest

Impact of facial asymmetry in visual perception: a 3-dimensional data analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this controlled study was to analyze the degree and localization of 3-dimensional (3D) facial asymmetry in adult patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) compared with a control group and its impact on the visual perception of faces. METHODS: The degree of 3D asymmetry was analyzed with a novel method without landmarks in 18 adults with complete unilateral CLP and 18 adults without congenital anomalies. Furthermore, the CLP and control faces were rated for appearance, symmetry, and facial expression by 30 participants. RESULTS: The results showed that adults with CLP

Retinal versus physical stimulus size as determinants of visual perception in simultanagnosia.

Patients with simultanagnosia following bilateral parieto-temporo-occipital brain damage show a characteristic impairment of global gestalt perception, while their perception of individual objects or elements remains intact. For instance, when shown 'hierarchical' stimuli comprising a larger global object (e.g. a large letter) made up from smaller components (e.g. multiple small letters), they typically report seeing one of the smaller components but not the global figure. Recent work on simultanagnosia revealed that global perception can be improved if local element spacing is reduced. Howeve

Ongoing activity fluctuations in hMT+ bias the perception of coherent visual motion.

We have recently shown that intrinsic fluctuations of ongoing activity during baseline have an impact on perceptual decisions reported for an ambiguous visual stimulus (Hesselmann et al., 2008). To test whether this result generalizes from the visual object domain to other perceptual and neural systems, the current study investigated the effect of ongoing signal fluctuations in motion-sensitive brain regions on the perception of coherent visual motion. We determined motion coherence thresholds individually for each subject using a dynamic random dot display. During functional magnetic resonanc

ERPs and eye movements reflect atypical visual perception in pervasive developmental disorder.

Many studies of eye tracking or event-related brain potentials (ERPs) in subjects with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) have yielded inconsistent results on attentional processing. However, recent studies have indicated that there are specific abnormalities in early processing that are probably related to perception. ERP amplitudes in response to visual stimuli, measured above the occipital (modality-specific) cortex, are reported to be abnormally small in patients with PDD, and the abnormal visual processing is possibly associated with the spatial visual frequency content of stimuli. It

Attentional dynamics and visual perception: mechanisms of spatial disorientation in Alzheimer's disease.

Visuospatial disorientation forces Alzheimer's disease patients to abandon independent activities. We found previously that limitations of ambulatory and vehicular navigation are linked to impaired visual motion processing in Alzheimer's disease. We now hypothesize that these perceptual impairments reflect temporal constraints on visual attention. We evaluated attentional, perceptual and neuropsychological capacities in 14 Alzheimer's disease patients and 12 age-matched older normal controls. The temporal dynamics of visual attention were measured using rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP)

Colour perception among the very elderly related to visual and cognitive function.

Colour perception was studied among a representative sample of 95-year olds and compared with previously examined 80-year olds and a group with Alzheimer's disease (AD), mean age of 80 years. The 95-year olds' results were on a significantly lower level than the other two groups but showed a similar pattern as to colour -discrimination, -naming, -preferences and colour/form recognition. Visual function among 95-year olds had only minor influence on their result in contrast to cognitive function which had a more profound impact. Most interestingly though, the subjects with Alzheimer's diagnosis

Bilateral vestibular failure impairs visual motion perception even with the head still.

Visual motion perception of a single object, moving with a constant angular velocity of 40 min of arc/s in four orthogonal directions, was measured in eight patients with chronic bilateral vestibular failure (BVF) with the head stationary. Perception of object motion was more severely impaired for horizontal than for vertical directions and the impairment was more pronounced in the dominant eye than the nondominant eye. Impaired motion perception in patients with BVF is best explained by a central visual mechanism that suppresses oscillopsia due to the involuntary retinal slip caused by the de

[Binocular photometer for measuring light perception in diseases of the visual pathway].

In patients with a reduction in visual function because of optic nerve neuritis, light sensitivity is tested to detect differences between the right and left eye in combination with the swinging flashlight test and visual evoked potential (VEP). A binocular Zeiss microscope was modified to use integrated photometer-controlled binocular stimulus fields and a central light system for fixation and variation of the contrast (background illumination). For exact binocular measurements of light sensitivity on both eyes, electronically controlled test fields (visual angle 5 degrees-20 degrees) guarant

[Evaluation of visual perception in multifocal IOL implantation with different presbyopic shift using results of visual acuity defocusing].

Defocusing of visual acuity was performed in 102 patients after cataract surgery with binocular implantation of multifocal IOL of refractive type "Rayner" with different presbyopic shift and their combinations: 3/3, 4/4 and 3/4 D. The best stability of different distance visual acuity was observed in anisomultifocal implantation, that optimizes pseudoaccommodative visual perception.

Enhanced visual acuity and image perception following correction of highly aberrated eyes using an adaptive optics visual simulator.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the changes in visual acuity and visual perception generated by correcting higher order aberrations in highly aberrated eyes using a large-stroke adaptive optics visual simulator. METHODS: A crx1 Adaptive Optics Visual Simulator (Imagine Eyes) was used to correct and modify the wavefront aberrations in 12 keratoconic eyes and 8 symptomatic postoperative refractive surgery (LASIK) eyes. After measuring ocular aberrations, the device was programmed to compensate for the eye's wavefront error from the second order to the fifth order (6-mm pupil). Visual acuity was assessed t

High-dimensional population codes reveal interpretable and diverse features underlying visual perception.

Despite large-scale recordings, neuroscience has identified representations for only a small fraction of visual features distinguishable by humans. This is increasingly attributed to mixed selectivity, where individual neurons respond to multiple stimuli, requiring population-level readouts of human-recognizable ('interpretable') representations. To identify interpretable representations at scale, we 1) computationally extract population codes from macaque electrophysiology datasets spanning V4 and IT cortex and vision models and 2) introduce an automated method to measure representation inter

Approaching human visual perception through AI-based representation of figure-ground segregation.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding how the visual system assigns borders to foreground objects is central to figure-ground perception, yet the computational principles underlying this process are still under investigation. METHODS: We trained multiple convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures on simple overlapping/occlusion stimuli and tested them on systematically degraded contours to probe how border-ownership (BOS) inference depends on available border context. RESULTS: Across networks, BOS could be inferred from feedforward computations even under degraded conditions, but performance sho

Bio-Inspired Motion-Contour-Guided Visual System for Contrast-Independent Looming Perception.

Insects can achieve rapid and precise collision detection despite having limited neural resources. This efficiency provides a vital reference for the development of artificial collision detection systems. Existing bio-inspired models typically include LGMD-based and correlation-based methods. Methods in the former category suffer from a non-linear dependency of warning time on the object's contrast against the background due to the strong reliance on inter-frame intensity differences. While the latter effectively describe motion perception by leveraging local motion information derived from a

Open multi-center intracranial electroencephalography dataset with task probing conscious visual perception.

We introduce an intracranial EEG (iEEG) dataset collected as part of an adversarial collaboration between proponents of two theories of consciousness: Global Neuronal Workspace Theory and Integrated Information Theory. The data were recorded from 38 patients undergoing intracranial monitoring of epileptic seizures across three research centers using the same experimental protocol. Participants were presented with suprathreshold visual stimuli belonging to four different categories (faces, objects, letters, false fonts) in three orientations (front, left, right view), and for three durations (0

The impact of weak inertial stimulation on visual-vestibular bimodal heading perception.

Perception of self-motion involves the integration of visual and vestibular sensory information. Currently, there is limited research exploring visual-vestibular interactions under weak vestibular stimulation. This study investigates the impact of weak inertial stimulation on visual-vestibular bimodal heading perception. A translational XY-axis motion platform equipped with a 46-inch LCD TV was utilized to generate synchronized visual and inertial stimuli. The heading perception was examined under visual-only, vestibular-only, and bimodal conditions using three levels of inertial stimuli (9 mg

Perceptography unveils the causal contribution of inferior temporal cortex to visual perception.

Neurons in the inferotemporal (IT) cortex respond selectively to complex visual features, implying their role in object perception. However, perception is subjective and cannot be read out from neural responses; thus, bridging the causal gap between neural activity and perception demands independent characterization of perception. Historically, though, the complexity of the perceptual alterations induced by artificial stimulation of IT cortex has rendered them impossible to quantify. To address this old problem, we tasked male macaque monkeys to detect and report optical impulses delivered to

Perception and Memory in the Ventral Visual Stream and Medial Temporal Lobe.

Perception and memory are traditionally thought of as separate cognitive functions, supported by distinct brain regions. The canonical perspective is that perceptual processing of visual information is supported by the ventral visual stream, whereas long-term declarative memory is supported by the medial temporal lobe. However, this modular framework cannot account for the increasingly large body of evidence that reveals a role for early visual areas in long-term recognition memory and a role for medial temporal lobe structures in high-level perceptual processing. In this article, we review re
