Voice disorders in patients with suspected laryngo-pharyngeal reflux disease.

Many symptoms have been recognized in association with laryngo-pharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD), but reports of perceptual voice disorders in this condition have been lacking to date. Forty-nine patients with suspected LPRD were studied for five specific perceptual voice characteristics, and these characteristics were compared to the same characteristics in individuals who had never seen an Otolaryngologist for a voice disorder or throat problem (controls). Sixteen of the suspected LPRD patients also underwent 24-hour pH probe studies. All patients with suspected LPRD had significantly increas

Motor disorders of voice and speech in Reye's syndrome survivors.

Disorders of voice and speech were studied in 43 survivors of Reye's syndrome (RS). During hospital convalescence 26 (60%) of 43 were aphonic, hoarse, or had other alterations of speech production. These disorders occurred in those patients with the worst severity of RS. Four patients (9% of survivors) had a persistent motor voice or speech disorder at follow-up examination 1 1/2 to five years after recovery. All of the patients have breathy, low-intensity voice quality, whereas three of the four exhibit rapid and slurred speech. These four children have no difficulty with the symbolic aspects

Use of the Polish Adaptation of the Pediatric Voice Handicap Index in Predicting Severe Voice Disorders in Children.

INTRODUCTION: The pediatric Voice Handicap Index (pVHI) score is known to be associated with the severity of dysphonia, assessed by the GRBAS perceptual voice rating scale or by the acoustic analysis. However, there is no consensus regarding pVHI scoring for clinical applications. The aim of this study was to determine the relevance of parental voice assessment, aided by the pVHI questionnaire, for the identification of cases of severe pediatric voice disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The prospective cohort study was conducted at the audiology and phoniatrics outpatient clinic. Children aged

Impaired auditory discrimination and auditory-motor integration in hyperfunctional voice disorders.

Hyperfunctional voice disorders (HVDs) are the most common class of voice disorders, consisting of diagnoses such as vocal fold nodules and muscle tension dysphonia. These speech production disorders result in effort, fatigue, pain, and even complete loss of voice. The mechanisms underlying HVDs are largely unknown. Here, the auditory-motor control of voice fundamental frequency (fo) was examined in 62 speakers with and 62 speakers without HVDs. Due to the high prevalence of HVDs in singers, and the known impacts of singing experience on auditory-motor function, groups were matched for singing
