Confrontation with others' emotions changes bodily resonance differently in those with low and high levels of depersonalization.

We present novel research on the cortical dynamics of atypical perceptual and emotional processing in people with symptoms of depersonalization-derealization disorder (DP-DR). We used electroencephalography (EEG)/event-related potentials (ERPs) to delineate the early perceptual mechanisms underlying emotional face recognition and mirror touch in adults with low and high levels of DP-DR symptoms (low-DP and high-DP groups). Face-sensitive visual N170 showed markedly less differentiation for emotional versus neutral face-voice stimuli in the high- than in the low-DP group. This effect was relate

Gender-Driven English Speech Emotion Recognition with Genetic Algorithm.

Speech emotion recognition based on gender holds great importance for achieving more accurate, personalized, and empathetic interactions in technology, healthcare, psychology, and social sciences. In this paper, we present a novel gender-emotion model. First, gender and emotion features were extracted from voice signals to lay the foundation for our recognition model. Second, a genetic algorithm (GA) processed high-dimensional features, and the Fisher score was used for evaluation. Third, features were ranked by their importance, and the GA was improved through novel crossover and mutation met

A comprehensive multimodal dataset for contactless lip reading and acoustic analysis.

Small-scale motion detection using non-invasive remote sensing techniques has recently garnered significant interest in the field of speech recognition. Our dataset paper aims to facilitate the enhancement and restoration of speech information from diverse data sources for speakers. In this paper, we introduce a novel multimodal dataset based on Radio Frequency, visual, text, audio, laser and lip landmark information, also called RVTALL. Specifically, the dataset consists of 7.5 GHz Channel Impulse Response (CIR) data from ultra-wideband (UWB) radars, 77 GHz frequency modulated continuous wave

Case Report: Tailored automatic speech recognition in global aphasia with dysarthria - a single case proof of concept.

BACKGROUND: Severe dysarthria and global aphasia drastically reduce speech intelligibility, confining communication to familiar partners. Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems may show limited performance when processing such atypical speech. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a speaker-dependent Voice-Input Voice-Output Communication Aid (VIVOCA) embedded in the CapisciAMe app can decode the speech of a person with severe dysarthria and aphasia more accurately than rehabilitation professionals human listeners (RPHL). METHODS: We conducted a single-case proof-of-concept study. A 34-year-ol

Longitudinal change in neural response to vocal emotion in adolescence.

Adolescence is associated with maturation of function within neural networks supporting the processing of social information. Previous longitudinal studies have established developmental influences on youth's neural response to facial displays of emotion. Given the increasing recognition of the importance of non-facial cues to social communication, we build on existing work by examining longitudinal change in neural response to vocal expressions of emotion in 8- to 19-year-old youth. Participants completed a vocal emotion recognition task at two timepoints (1 year apart) while undergoing funct

A glimpsing model of speech perception in noise.

Do listeners process noisy speech by taking advantage of "glimpses"-spectrotemporal regions in which the target signal is least affected by the background? This study used an automatic speech recognition system, adapted for use with partially specified inputs, to identify consonants in noise. Twelve masking conditions were chosen to create a range of glimpse sizes. Several different glimpsing models were employed, differing in the local signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) used for detection, the minimum glimpse size, and the use of information in the masked regions. Recognition results were compared w

Computer-based voice familiarization, delivered remotely using an online platform, improves speech intelligibility for older and younger adults.

Understanding speech in noisy environments is often challenging but is easier if we are listening to someone familiar-for example, naturally familiar people (e.g., friends, partners) or voices that have been familiarized artificially in the lab. Thus, familiarizing people with voices they regularly encounter (e.g., new friends and colleagues) could improve speech intelligibility in everyday life, which might be particularly useful for people who struggle to comprehend speech in noisy environments, such as older adults. Yet, we do not currently understand whether computer-based voice familiariz

Impaired non-verbal emotion processing in Pathological Gamblers.

Impaired perception of emotion in others has been described and confirmed in addictions with substances, but no such data exists regarding addictions without substances. As it has been hypothesized that toxic effect of substances on the brain was responsible for the impairments described, studying addictions without substances could be of interest to confirm this hypothesis. Twenty-two male pathological gamblers were compared to 22 male healthy controls matched for age and education level on non-verbal emotion perception tasks including faces, voices, and musical excerpts. Depression and anxie

Assessing the use of automatic speech recognition and large language models for individuals with language impairments.

Large language models (LLMs) have attracted much attention for healthcare applications, demonstrating strong potential in automating conversational interactions. However, cloud-hosted systems raise privacy concerns and text-based interfaces can be difficult for children, older adults, and individuals with language impairments. Edge-deployed, voice-enabled LLM systems may address these barriers by keeping data local and using automatic speech recognition (ASR) for speech input. However, ASR transcripts often contain disfluencies, fillers, grammatical errors, and recognition noise, which may red

Efficient recognition of facial expressions does not require motor simulation.

What mechanisms underlie facial expression recognition? A popular hypothesis holds that efficient facial expression recognition cannot be achieved by visual analysis alone but additionally requires a mechanism of motor simulation - an unconscious, covert imitation of the observed facial postures and movements. Here, we first discuss why this hypothesis does not necessarily follow from extant empirical evidence. Next, we report experimental evidence against the central premise of this view: we demonstrate that individuals can achieve normotypical efficient facial expression recognition despite

Automatic detection of voice impairments by means of short-term cepstral parameters and neural network based detectors.

It is well known that vocal and voice diseases do not necessarily cause perceptible changes in the acoustic voice signal. Acoustic analysis is a useful tool to diagnose voice diseases being a complementary technique to other methods based on direct observation of the vocal folds by laryngoscopy. Through the present paper two neural-network based classification approaches applied to the automatic detection of voice disorders will be studied. Structures studied are multilayer perceptron and learning vector quantization fed using short-term vectors calculated accordingly to the well-known Mel Fre

[Diagnosis and management of peritonsillar abscess].

A peritonsillar abscess is a common infection in young adults. Clinical signs often include unilateral pharyngodynia, a "hot potato" voice, unilateral swelling with uvular deviation, asymmetric palatal contraction, and trismus. Complications include infections of the deep neck spaces and mediastinitis, which require prompt recognition due to their severity. Rapid diagnosis is essential. While not consistently used, CT scanning provides excellent specificity. The management of a peritonsillar abscess is based on an individualized approach that combines antibiotic therapy with interventional pro

Previous experience as a confounding factor in comparing cochlear-implant processing schemes.

It is of great importance to compare the relative merits of different cochlear-implant speech-processing strategies. Some groups have compared different strategies within single subjects, but usually the subject has prior experience with one strategy, and no allowance is made for this prior experience. We show in the present study that this is inappropriate. We tested one subject using the Melbourne (Cochlear Corp.) multichannel implant with the device set to process sounds in two different ways. In the first processing scheme, the device functioned normally, extracting information about voici

[Compensation of occupational diseases during monitoring of the ARDCO cohort].

INTRODUCTION: Questions concerning under-reporting of occupational diseases (OD) linked to asbestos exposure are regularly voiced in France. Monitoring of the French multicenter Asbestos-Related Disease Cohort (ARDCO), which ensures post-occupational medical surveillance of subjects having been exposed to asbestos, provides information on (1) the medico-legal steps taken following screening by computed tomography (CT) for benign thoracic diseases, and (2) recognition of OD as a causal factor in malignant diseases. METHODS: OD recognition - and possible compensation - was analyzed in July 2021

Resting-state connectivity reveals a role for sensorimotor systems in vocal emotional processing in children.

Voices are a primary source of emotional information in everyday interactions. Being able to process non-verbal vocal emotional cues, namely those embedded in speech prosody, impacts on our behaviour and communication. Extant research has delineated the role of temporal and inferior frontal brain regions for vocal emotional processing. A growing number of studies also suggest the involvement of the motor system, but little is known about such potential involvement. Using resting-state fMRI, we ask if the patterns of motor system intrinsic connectivity play a role in emotional prosody recogniti
