Hoarseness or dysphonia are terms used to describe a change in the quality of the voice. The voice quality can be raspy, breathy, strained, fatigued, rough, tremulous or weak. There may be a change in pitch, restriction of range, voice breaks, decreased projection, or abnormal resonance. It is important to remember that a voice disorder is not a disease in itself but rather a presentation of an underlying pathology. Clinicians' knowledge of paediatric hoarseness is limited as it can be difficult to examine children using fibreoptic laryngoscopy and the child may not comprehend the need for det

These past years, the Unité de Phoniatrie & Logopédie du CHUV, in Lausanne, has been increasingly requested to provide care to transsexual patients. If the sex change from female to male does not generally entail vocal problems as a result of hormonotherapy, such is not the case the other way around. Thus, our patients are mostly men converting into women. Since the male larynx cannot be modified on an organic level, speech therapy is of the utmost importance in ensuring vocal adaptation. In this article, we briefly describe the complete gender transformation program, and detail the therapeuti

Unilateral vocal cord paralysis refers to the immobility or limitation of mobility of a vocal cord due to neural injury. Neural injury is most commonly caused by surgical trauma or a malignant tumor. Hoarseness with various degrees is the main symptom. The typical finding is a vocal cord remaining in a laterally immobile position on the side of injury in mirror examination, when the patient is asked to produce a voice. Establishing the etiology of the paralysis often requires imaging studies in order to exclude a tumor. Treatment consists of voice therapy and, in severe cases, voice surgery.

The use of hard-walled narrow tubes, often called resonance tubes, for the purpose of voice therapy and voice training has a historical precedent and some theoretical support, but the mechanism of any potential benefit from the application of this technique is not well understood. Fifteen vocally untrained male participants produced a series of spoken /a/ vowels at a modal pitch and constant loudness, before and after a minute of repeated phonation into a 50-cm hard-walled glass tube at the same pitch and loudness targets. Electroglottography was used to measure the glottal contact quotient (C

Behavioral evaluation and treatment of dysphonia in the professional voice user are the responsibility of the speech-language pathologist. As a clinician, treating the professional voice user requires expert listening and management skills. Interdisciplinary team relationships are crucial for thorough care of this population. When treating the professional voice user additional information should be included while gathering the history because of differences in vocal demand and expectations when compared with the non-professional voice user. Voice therapy is patient-specific and when treating

The study of voice disorders present some specific difficulties such as the aetiological variability of this kind of disorders or the heterogeneity and the poor data we have about the effectiveness of certain treatments used. Research has performed different types of questionnaires in this area to obtain data about the treatments used in clinical practice. These studies have shown lack or scarce of evaluation and control methods in the rehabilitation programs that the specialists commonly use. In this report, a screening questionnaire was sent to the Otorhinolaryngology Departments of the Span

Numerous cases of early dysphonia in children are due to congenital lesions of the vocal cord. Others, developing later, appear within a context of maltreatment of the vocal cords, and become part of the child's psychological and psychomotor developmental disorder. Hearing and seeing dysphonia are the two parts of our diagnostic stage, assisted by the use of optic fibres and audiovisual methods. Treatment must be global, putting dysphonia back into its proper context, leaving a substantial part to vocal re-education, as laryngeal microsurgery only comes into play when the result is inadequate,

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mastering the operatic voice requires many years of intensive training and leads to a widespread, global impact on the structural and functional organization of the human brain. However, whether training and experience in producing operatic style singing develops differential neural representation for operatic and natural voices in opera singers remains unexplored.
METHODS: We addressed this question by investigating the representation of short melodies sung in two distinct styles - a full operatic voice with vibrato (operatic style) and a straight voice without vibrat

Two experiments explored the role of differences in voice gender in the recognition of speech masked by a competing talker in cochlear implant simulations. Experiment 1 confirmed that listeners with normal hearing receive little benefit from differences in voice gender between a target and masker sentence in four- and eight-channel simulations, consistent with previous findings that cochlear implants deliver an impoverished representation of the cues for voice gender. However, gender differences led to small but significant improvements in word recognition with 16 and 32 channels. Experiment 2

OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this cross-sectional survey study was to describe the frequency, characteristics, and consequences of voice problems among coxswains. Additionally, we sought to identify factors that predict the presence of perceived voice problems among these athletes, and evaluate the nature and extent of participants' knowledge, use, and perceived benefit of interventions to prevent voice problems.
METHODS: Eighty-five participants (54 females and 31 males) completed the survey. The majority (62.4%) were between 18 and 24 years of age. Participants completed an electron

INTRODUCTION: Semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTEs) are frequently used exercises in voice therapy. An important shortcoming to most SOVTEs is the inability to include continuous speech in these exercises. A variation of water-resistance therapy (WRT), during which a patient phonates through a resonance tube ending in water, was developed to include continuous speech: the semi-occluded water resistance ventilation mask (SOVM-WR). The current study investigated the immediate effects of this innovative technique on vocal outcomes of women with dysphonia.
METHODS: A pretest-posttest rando

PURPOSE: Voice rest is frequently prescribed after phonosurgery, but optimal type and duration for voice outcomes have not been demonstrated. Studies to date have been characterized by heterogeneity in surgical procedures and laryngeal diagnoses. We sought to analyze the effect of recommended absolute voice rest duration on outcomes of microflap surgery for benign vocal fold lesions. A secondary purpose was to identify patient factors associated with postoperative voice outcomes.
METHOD: Forty-three patients were included in this retrospective review of patients aged 18 years and above who un

Semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTEs) are increasingly popular as therapeutic exercises for patients with voice disorders. This popularity is reflected in the growing research literature, investigating the scientific principles underlying SOVTEs and their practical efficacy. This study examines several acoustic, articulatory, and aerodynamic variables before, during, and after short-duration (15 s) SOVTEs with a narrow tube in air. Participants were 20 healthy young adults, and all variables were measured at threshold phonation levels. Acoustic variables were measured with a microphone

Abnormal psychological factors have been implicated in the development of functional dysphonia (FD). This investigation describes the personality and psychological characteristics of 25 female subjects who had received the diagnosis of FD. In all subjects symptoms were resolved after voice therapy. While vocally asymptomatic, these remitted subjects with FD completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), an objective personality questionnaire. When compared with a medical outpatient control group, the results showed that subjects with FD scored significantly higher on 7 of 10

INTRODUCTION: The voice production of actors is complex and can be assessed by different professionals. The objective of this study was to measure actor's global vocal performance (GVP) based on overall voice quality (OVQ) and overall severity (OS), by consensus auditory-perceptual evaluation of voice (CAPE-V), and to investigate the possible correlation between these two analyses in actors without self-reported vocal complaints.
METHODS: A total of 39 actors participated in this study, including 20 men and 19 women. Their ages ranged from 18 to 53 years (mean of 33.3 years), with a mean dura

Phonation into glass tubes, keeping the free end of the tube in water, has been a frequently used voice therapy method in Finland for more than four decades. These so-called resonance tubes, introduced by Professor Sovijärvi in the 1960s, are used in different ways depending on the patient's diagnosis and the goal of the voice therapy. In this paper, some of the most common ways of using the tube are presented.

The objective of the study is to determine the efficacy of voice therapy in the treatment of age-related dysphonia. The study was conducted using a retrospective case-control chart review. The medical records of 54 patients older than 60 years diagnosed with age-related dysphonia without complicating diagnoses were reviewed. Patients who chose to undergo voice therapy were grouped as cases. Patients who chose not to undergo voice therapy were grouped as controls. The voice-related quality of life (VRQOL) measure was used to measure outcomes before and after treatment in cases and at a minimum
