Quantifying the contribution rates of sulfonamide antibiotics removal mechanisms in constructed wetlands using multivariate statistical analysis.

The removal of antibiotics in subsurface flow constructed wetlands is performed through various removal mechanisms, such as adsorption, hydrolysis, microbial degradation and plant uptake. However, the contribution rates of the removal mechanisms in constructed wetlands are still not well studied. This study conducted a series of experiments and used multivariate statistical analysis to determine contribution rates for substrate adsorption, hydrolysis, and microbial degradation. Multiple stepwise regression analysis indicated that specific surface area and salt content were the main factors inf

Effects of design parameters, microbial community and nitrogen removal on the field-scale multi-pond constructed wetlands.

Ecological multi-pond constructed wetlands (CWs) are an alternative wastewater treatment technology for nitrogen removal from non-point source pollution. As an important component of nitrogen cycles in the field-scale CWs, microorganisms are affected by design parameters. Nevertheless, the mechanism of design parameters affecting the distribution of microbial community and removal performance remains largely unexplored. In this study, satisfactory nitrogen removal performance was obtained in three multi-pond CWs. The highest mass removal rate per square meter (1104.0 mg/m2/day) and mass remova

Modeling the anaerobic digestion of wastewater sludge under sulfate-rich conditions.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a biological treatment process to stabilize organic solids and produce biogas. If present, sulfate is reduced to sulfide by anaerobic sulfate-reducing bacteria and the sulfide can be toxic to anaerobic microorganisms. Here, the effect of high initial sulfate concentration on AD of wastewater sludge was investigated using lab-scale batch experiments. Additionally, a systematic mathematical modeling approach was applied for insight into the experimental results. Cumulative biogas and methane production decreased with increasing initial sulfate doses (0-3.300 mg S L-1

An integrated strategy to enhance performance of anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an essential process in wastewater treatment plants as it can reduce the amount of waste activated sludge (WAS) for disposal, and also enables the recovery of bioenergy (i.e. methane). Here, a new pretreatment method to enhance anaerobic digestion was achieved by treating thickened WAS (TWAS) with ferric (as FeCl3) and nitrite simultaneously for 24-hour at room temperature. Biochemical methane potential tests showed markedly improved degradability in the pretreated TWAS, with a relative increase in hydrolysis rate by 30%. A comparative experiment with the operation

A novel method to remove nitrogen from reject water in wastewater treatment plants using a methane- and methanol-dependent bacterial consortium.

This study proposes a novel method to directly treat reject water with a high ammonium content, without relying on dilution. The originality of this method resides in leveraging the coordinated action of a methane- and methanol-dependent bacterial consortium and the biogas generated from wastewater treatment facilities. Specifically, ammonium is removed through autotrophic assimilation in the glutamate cycle of methanotrophs and Methylophilus while, simultaneously, methanol generated by methanotrophs is treated through formaldehyde assimilation as Methylophilus undergo the same ribulose monoph

Iron Transformation and Its Role in Phosphorus Immobilization in a UCT-MBR with Vivianite Formation Enhancement.

The formation of vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O) in iron (Fe)-dosed wastewater treatment facilities has the potential to develop into an economically feasible method of phosphorus (P) recovery. In this work, a long-term steady FeIII-dosed University of Cape Town process-membrane bioreactor (UCT-MBR) system was investigated to evaluate the role of Fe transformations in immobilizing P via vivianite crystallization. The highest fraction of FeII, to total Fe (Fetot), was observed in the anaerobic chamber, revealing that a redox condition suitable for FeIII reduction was established by improving operati

Understanding the preferences for different types of urban greywater uses and the impact of qualitative attributes.

Greywater reuse can allow substantial improvements in the efficiency of potable water systems. However, widespread uptake of greywater reuse depends on its acceptability by the population. Previous studies have assessed the implementation costs of greywater reuse technology, and considered its acceptability in principle. Although cost is clearly very important in terms of adopting/installing the technology, the actual perception of greywater reuse is crucial in driving the acceptability of use and the long-term success of the technology. This study uses discrete choice models to quantify, for

Assessment of the use of mainstream iron addition for phosphorous control on H2 S content of biogas from anaerobic digestion of sludges.

A material flux analysis on sulfur (S), phosphorus (P), aluminum (Al), and iron (Fe) was conducted for two WWTPs (Galt and Kitchener) to evaluate the potential of coagulants that are employed for phosphorus control to reduce hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) emissions in the biogas from anaerobic digestion. It was found that while the Galt WWTP receives higher concentrations of S in the raw wastewater than the Kitchener WWTP, this had only a modest impact on the speciation of S entering anaerobic digestion. At both plants, only 2%-4% of influent S entered the digesters. The presence of Fe in the sludge

Antibiotic resistance genes identified in wastewater treatment plant systems - A review.

The intensive use of antibiotics for human, veterinary and agricultural purposes, results in their continuous release into the environment. Together with antibiotics, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are introduced into wastewater. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are believed to be probable hotspots for antibiotic resistance dissemination in the environment as they offer convenient conditions for ARB proliferation as well as for horizontal transfer of ARGs among different microorganisms. In fact, genes conferring resistance to all classes of antibi

Quantitative microbial risk assessment of Greywater on-site reuse.

Recycle domestic greywater for on-site non-potable uses can lessen the demand on potable water and the burden on wastewater treatment plants. However, lack of studies to assess health risk associated with such practices has hindered their popularity. A Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment was conducted to estimate the public health risks for two greywater reuse scenarios: toilet flushing and food-crop irrigation. Household greywater quality from three sources (bathroom, laundry and kitchen) was analyzed. Mathematical exposure rates of different scenarios were established based on human behav

Removal of phosphorus using suspended reactive filters (SRFs) - efficiency and potential applications.

The removal of phosphorus (P) from agricultural runoff is essential to reduce the threat of eutrophication in bodies of water. In this study, an alternative method of applying P reactive materials (RMs) in the form of suspended reactive filters (SRFs) is presented. The SRF method enables P which has already entered a body of water to be caught. In this study, an autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) was used as the SRFs. The experiment was carried out in a laboratory in a hydraulic block of 1 m in width and 2 m in length. Three curtains, consisting of eight suspended bags filled with the AAC, were

Vivianite as an important iron phosphate precipitate in sewage treatment plants.

Iron is an important element for modern sewage treatment, inter alia to remove phosphorus from sewage. However, phosphorus recovery from iron phosphorus containing sewage sludge, without incineration, is not yet economical. We believe, increasing the knowledge about iron-phosphorus speciation in sewage sludge can help to identify new routes for phosphorus recovery. Surplus and digested sludge of two sewage treatment plants was investigated. The plants relied either solely on iron based phosphorus removal or on biological phosphorus removal supported by iron dosing. Mössbauer spectroscopy showe

Phosphorus binding to Filtra P in batch tests.

Recent guidelines from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency recommend stricter regulations for phosphorus (P) reduction in small-scale wastewater treatment, which raises the need for additional and novel treatment steps in small-scale facilities. Following a biological pretreatment, filter systems can be a convenient option. In this study, the P binding capacity of the filter material Filtra P was investigated in batch tests. The batch test method was evaluated with respect to the effects of liquid-to-solid ratio and particle size on P binding capacity. For initial concentrations (c(i))

Is the whole the sum of its parts? Agent-based modelling of wastewater treatment systems.

Agent-based models (ABMS) simulate individual units within a system, such as the bacteria in a biological wastewater treatment system. This paper outlines past, current and potential future applications of ABMs to wastewater treatment. ABMs track heterogeneities within microbial populations, and this has been demonstrated to yield different predictions of bulk behaviors than the conventional, "lumped" approaches for enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) completely mixed reactors systems. Current work included the application of the ABM approach to bacterial adaptation/evolution, using

Nitrogen and phosphorus removal using a novel integrated system of natural zeolite and lime.

Nitrogen and phosphorus can cause eutrophication problems in receiving waters. These nutrients can be eliminated by different wastewater treatments but they tend to be costly or require complex operations. With these reasons in mind, this work set out to study the behavior of a novel combined or integrated system with zeolite and lime for the removal of these chemical species. With the integrated treatment, excellent removals-98 % NH(+) (4), 100 % total phosphorus (TP), 79 % chemical oxygen demand (COD), 71 % BOD(5), 99 % of total suspended solids (TSS) and 100 % of fecal coliforms-were obtain

Effect of bromide on the formation of disinfection by-products during wastewater chlorination.

The effect of bromide ion on the formation and speciation of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) during the chlorination of biologically treated wastewaters was investigated. The experimental results showed that the formation of total THMs and total HAAs during chlorine disinfection increased with increasing bromide levels in wastewater. The formation of CHBr(3) increased nearly linearly with increasing bromide ion levels, while CHCl(2)Br and CHClBr(2) increased with increasing bromide concentration from 0 to 3.2 mg L(-1) and thereafter remained constant or slightly decreased. Simultaneous removal of N and P in a SBR with production of valuable compounds: application to concentrated wastewaters.

This article examines the optimisation of recovery of phosphorus and nitrogen (via struvite) in small treatment units for high strength wastewaters using biologically assisted precipitation. The particular focus was the synergetic effect between removal of orthophosphate and the biological reactions occurring during nitrogen removal. The most sensitive parameter influencing the phosphate solid forms (HAP, MAP) is pH. Sequencing batch mode helps maintain high gradients in ammonia concentration, which encourages struvite precipitation. Nitrification has a key effect on the precipitation, through
