Kill two birds with one stone: The management of hazardous waste and the preparation of efficient adsorbents for Pb(II) were realized by the pyrolysis of penicillin mycelial dreg.

The penicillin industry produces a large amount of penicillin mycelial dreg (PMD), potentially causing severe environmental problems without proper treatment and disposal. To achieve the goals of PMD management, the present work explored the potential of PMD as a novel feedstock to produce biochar with very high adsorption performance. PMD was pyrolyzed at 400-800 °C to prepare biochars (PMD-BCs), and the physical and chemical properties were characterized using various methods. The adsorption capacities of Pb2+ on PMD-BC400, PMD-BC600, and PMD-BC800 were 37.04, 62.89, and 107.53 mg/g, respect

[Measurements of Ar(I) excitation temperatures and electron number densities in an ICP with and without the presence of Freon 12--the development of ICP technology for hazardous waste management].

For the management of refractory hazardous wastes, an innovative technology emerging recently is the application of ultra high temperature plasma. The preliminary study on destruction of Freon 12 by ICP (1-2kW) under a joint program between Xiamen Univ. and Hong Kong Baptist Univ. showed that the ICP technology indeed holds a great potential for hazardous wastes management. The destruction efficiency is more than 99.9999%. With and without the presence of Freon 12, Ar(I) excitation temperatures were measured by Boltzmann plot method and electron number densities the by H (beta) line broadening

An Integrated Approach to Nuclear Risk Governance in Decommissioning with a Major Focus on Stakeholder Risk Philosophies.

This paper addresses how nuclear risk governance can ensure long-term safety, societal trust and ethical responsibility in managing nuclear waste under conditions of uncertainty. This challenge is shaped by increasing policy demands for transparency, sustainability and meaningful public engagement following major nuclear incidents. Existing approaches to risk governance draw on a range of theoretical perspectives, spanning technical, social and ethical domains. However, these are often applied in isolation, resulting in fragmented governance models that fail to capture the full socio-technical

Management of solid waste marble powder: improving quality of sodium chloride obtained from sulphate-rich lake/subsoil brines with simultaneous recovery of high-purity gypsum and magnesium carbonate hydrate.

Marble industry worldwide produces large amount of non-degradable marble dust powder (MDP) waste during mining and processing stages. MDP mainly comprises of CaCO3 with small amounts of Mg, Fe or Si in various forms. In India, mainly in Rajasthan state, marble is quarried in huge amounts and MDP thus produced is collected improperly and dumped at any abandoned land or identified disposal sites. On the other hand, the composition of sub soil/lake brines of Rajasthan is typical in nature as it does not have much Ca2+ and Mg2+ impurities but contains higher levels of SO42-. Therefore, the common

Performance evaluation of crop residue and kitchen waste-derived biochar for eco-efficient removal of arsenic from soils of the Indo-Gangetic plain: A step towards sustainable pollution management.

Biochar was produced from wheat straw (Triticum aestivum), rice straw (Oryza sativa), and kitchen waste at varying pyrolysis temperatures (300°C-700 °C). The biochars were screened depending on their production and physicochemical properties for the adsorptive removal of arsenic (As). The morphological analysis by Field emission scanning electron microscope revealed a porous biochar surface. Spectroscopic characterization of biochars indicated the co-existence of minerals, carboxyl, carbonyl, amide, and hydroxyl groups, which implies the suitability of biochar to immobilize metal (loid)s from

Biorefinery-inspired, two-step valorization strategy to manage plant-based recalcitrant organic waste, involving solvent extraction, and fermentation with Bacillus clausii-a proof of concept study.

Approximately 40-50% of municipal solid waste is organic and causing biogenic malodor and infections, due to inefficient treatment methods. Biorefinery-based bioremediation and valorization is in vogue against these conventional strategies since it combines unit operations for better efficiency and productivity. Deriving inspiration, the proposed strategy puts together a unique and compatible combination of processes. This novel two-step valorization workflow involves the extraction of small molecules using organic solvents, and fermentation of resulting denatured residues (increased biodegrad

Unlocking the surge in demand for personal and protective equipment (PPE) and improvised face coverings arising from coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic - Implications for efficacy, re-use and sustainable waste management.

Currently, there is no effective vaccine for tackling the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 with the occurrence of repeat waves of infection frequently stretching hospital resources beyond capacity. Disease countermeasures rely upon preventing person-to-person transmission of SARS-CoV2 so as to protect front-line healthcare workers (HCWs). COVID-19 brings enormous challenges in terms of sustaining the supply chain for single-use-plastic personal and protective equipment (PPE). Post-COVID-19, the changes in medical practice will drive high demand for PPE. Important countermeasures

Fate of metals contained in waste electrical and electronic equipment in a municipal waste treatment process.

In Japan, waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) that is not covered by the recycling laws are treated as municipal solid waste. A part of common metals are recovered during the treatment; however, other metals are rarely recovered and their destinations are not clear. This study investigated the distribution ratios and substance flows of 55 metals contained in WEEE during municipal waste treatment using shredding and separation techniques at a Japanese municipal waste treatment plant. The results revealed that more than half of Cu and most of Al contained in WEEE end up in landfills

Waste upcycling into High-Value MOFs: A Path toward direct Urban mining and sustainable resources recovery.

The rapid growth of industrial activities and urbanisation has generated vast amounts of solid waste, while also increasing the demand for sustainable and functional materials. This highlights the urgent need for strategies that can transform waste streams into valuable resources. Waste streams already contain the essential components required to synthesize valuable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): metal ions, organic linkers and structure-directing auxiliaries. This review consolidates studies of this emerging field that took off five years ago and organises "waste-to-MOF" routes into three c

Benign solidification of molten slag on rotary cup atomizer: slag shell formation, remelting and residue characteristics.

The rotary cup has been recently adopted to atomize the molten blast furnace slag in its waste-to-energy treatment process, forging the reputed centrifugal-granulation-assisted thermal energy recovery (CGATER) technology. The formidably high temperature (∼1500 °C) poses a great threat to the long-term running of the rotary cup regarding the possible risk of being melted by the hot slag. Indeed, it has been observed that a layer of slag shell may be formed on the atomizer because of the rapid solidification of the molten slag film caused by the strong heat dissipation at the early stage of cent

From inequitable to sustainable e-waste processing for reduction of impact on human health and the environment.

Recycling of electric and electronic waste products (e-waste) which amounted to more than 50 million metric tonnes per year worldwide is a massive and global operation. Unfortunately, an estimated 70-80% of this waste has not been properly managed because the waste went from developed to low-income countries to be dumped into landfills or informally recycled. Such recycling has been carried out either directly on landfill sites or in small, often family-run recycling shops without much regulations or oversights. The process traditionally involved manual dismantling, cleaning with hazardous sol

Urban Mining of E-Waste is Becoming More Cost-Effective Than Virgin Mining.

Stocks of virgin-mined materials utilized in linear economic flows continue to present enormous challenges. E-waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams, and threatens to grow into a global problem of unmanageable proportions. An effective form of management of resource recycling and environmental improvement is available, in the form of extraction and purification of precious metals taken from waste streams, in a process known as urban mining. In this work, we demonstrate utilizing real cost data from e-waste processors in China that ingots of pure copper and gold could be recovered fr

Economic incentive and social influence to overcome household waste separation dilemma: A field intervention study.

China has experienced a rapid growth of solid waste over the years, household waste source-separation is becoming a nationwide strategy for promoting recycling economy and improving urban environmental sustainability. Waste separation, however, may end in failure due to the free-rider problem similarly existing in other pro-environmental collective actions. Along with the economic and sociological/social psychological logic respectively, this study tested the effects of economic incentive and social influence, which are theoretically considered as two general solutions to domestic waste separa
