Phosphorus (P) fertilizer has contributed to the eutrophication of freshwater ecosystems. Watershed-based conservation programs aiming to reduce external P loading to surface waters have not resulted in significant water-quality improvements. One factor that can help explain the lack of water-quality response is remobilization of accumulated legacy (historical) P within the terrestrial-aquatic continuum, which can obscure the beneficial impacts of current conservation efforts. We examined how contemporary river P trends (between 1992 and 2012) responded to estimated changes in contemporary agr

Implications of instream physical heterogeneity, rainfall-aided flushing, and stream discharge on water quality control have been investigated in a headwater stream of a climatic region that has contrasting dry and wet seasons. Dry (low flow) season's physical heterogeneity showed a positive correlation with good water quality. However, in the wet season, physical heterogeneity showed minor or no significance on water quality variations. Furthermore, physical heterogeneity appeared to be more complementary with good water quality subsequent to rainfall events. In many cases stream discharge wa

The rapid population growth and uncontrolled development in the coastal zone have led to major pollution impacts on creeks, estuarine, and coastal environment. Water quality models are valuable tools to understand the environmental processes for prediction of pollution impacts and evaluate future trends for management. Presently, the Malad creek in west coast of Mumbai receives wastewater and sewage from open drains and partially treated sewage from Malad and Versova treatment plants. The objective of the paper is to assess the environmental quality and estimate the extent of improvement in di

The aim of this study was to determine the physicochemical composition of water intended for human consumption in several regions of Southern Algeria. Excess minerals in drinking water, including magnesium, calcium, sulfates and fluorides play a fundamental role in the prevention of urinary calculi, which are formed mainly from calcium oxalate. The ever-increasingly prevalence of this disorder and its recurrence make it a real public health problem in Algeria. The most elementary preventive treatment, recommended to all subjects with lithiasis, is to drink 2 to 3 L water distributed throughout

An understanding of the environmental effects of the use of wildland fire retardant is needed to provide informed decision-making regarding forest management. We compiled data from all post-fire surface water monitoring programs where the fire retardant constituents ammonia, phosphorus, and cyanide were measured, and data were available in the public domain. For streams near four major wildfires, we evaluated whether these chemicals originated primarily from fire or from retardant use. We compared measured concentrations in streams where chemical wildland fire retardant was applied with concen

BACKGROUND: Plasma-activated water (PAW) is emerging as a sustainable input capable of enhancing crop yield and quality while reducing dependence on synthetic fertilizers. However, how PAW chemistry evolves during storage and how these dynamics translate into crop growth and quality remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the effects of plasma activation time (30, 60, 90, and 120 min) and application timing (immediately after generation versus after 72-h storage) on the physicochemical properties of PAW and yield, mineral composition, and phytochemical profile of pea (Pisum sativum L.)

Accurate prediction of water quality parameters is essential for risk warning and intelligent management in aquaculture. However, water quality time series remain difficult to forecast because of time-varying cross-variable dependencies, coexisting periodic variations and abrupt changes, and the limited ability of existing models to preserve complex frequency components and local fluctuations. To address these challenges, we proposed a Dynamic Multilevel Fusion Network (DMFNet) for complex nonstationary water quality forecasting. First, a Dynamic Confidence Relation Graph (DCRG) constructs dyn

Excessive nitrogen runoff from agricultural and urban sources poses a significant threat to coastal ecosystems. Elevated dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) levels contribute to algal blooms, hypoxia, and coral degradation, undermining the health and resilience of the reef system. In addition to land-based management, bivalve aquaculture has been proposed as a potential solution for mitigating nitrogen loads in coastal environments. However, studies assessing the suitability, scale, and potential benefits of such production for reducing impacts of nitrogen runoff are often lacking. This study e

Subsurface gravel wetlands are an emerging type of green infrastructure that can be used to manage stormwater through the capture and slow release of runoff. They are unique to other types of green infrastructure in that they have a distinct fully saturated gravel layer below an occasionally saturated soil layer that influences pollutant removal processes. While they have been widely applied to treat wastewater, our understanding of their efficiency in treating stormwater with variable pollutant inputs is limited. To fill this gap, this study monitored the flow and water quality (total suspend

This study represented the first comprehensive assessment of the physicochemical water quality status of the entire Yamuna River stretch in India. The upper zone had "excellent-to-good" water quality index (WQI) with mean 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) values of 2.1 and 2.4 mg/L during monsoon and non-monsoon, respectively. The middle region was described by "poor-to-marginal" WQI with average BOD5 values of 13.1 mg/L (monsoon) and 32.3 mg/L (non-monsoon). The low WQI observations at the midstream region were due to the negative impact of two major drains, namely Najafgarh and Shahdara

Waterborne outbreaks of salmonellosis are uncommon. The Tennessee Department of Health investigated a salmonellosis outbreak of 10 cases with the only common risk factor being exposure to a single splash pad. Risks included water splashed in the face at the splash pad and no free residual chlorine in the water system. We surveyed water quality and patron behaviors at splash pads statewide. Of the 29 splash pads participating in the water quality survey, 24 (83%) used a recirculating water system. Of the 24, 5 (21%) water samples were tested by polymerase chain reaction and found to be positive

The water quality in the Inner Murchison Bay (IMB) located in Uganda on the northern shores of Lake Victoria is affected by a complex mixture of processes and driving factors including pollution, river inflows, lake water levels, wetland management and flora and fauna populations. This study attempts to explain long-term variations of the IMB water quality and to provide a plausible water quality model. Because intermittent monitoring around the Bay hinders accurate determination of pollution, concentrations at the extreme northern shores (hotspots) are considered indicative of the pollutant l

Biosolids, materials resulting from domestic sewage treatment, are surface applied to forest soils to increase phosphorus (P), nitrate, and ammonium availability. Retaining streamside management zones (SMZs) can limit nutrient pollution of streams. We delineated 15-m SMZs along three intermittent streams in an 18-yr-old Pinus taeda L. plantation. We applied biosolids at a rate of 1120 and 629 kg ha(-1) of total nitrogen and total P outside the SMZ on one side of each of the streams while maintaining the other side of the stream as control. We collected water samples from the three treated and

Disinfection is a critical process in water and wastewater treatment to pathogen control and achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG-6). However, the formation of intermediate compounds during disinfection, known as disinfection byproducts (DBPs), poses adverse effects to human health. Trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) are the major regulated halogenated DBPs formed during chlorination. In India, chlorination remains the conventional disinfection method in water and wastewater treatment systems. This study investigated the formation of THMs and HAAs in chlorinated water and

Microbiological contamination of water poses an ongoing global public health concern. This study assesses the association between water quality and beef contamination within the slaughter-to-plate continuum, considering additional operational and handling factors. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the role of water quality and other factors in beef contamination along the slaughterhouse-to-plate continuum in Southwestern Ethiopia. A laboratory-based cross-sectional study was conducted from February to May 2024, involving 349 aseptically collected samples. Of these samples, 126 were

Chemical grouts are widely used in coal mining for water control and rock reinforcement, but their long-term leaching behavior and groundwater impacts are insufficiently studied, with existing hydrogeochemical methods rarely applied to engineered grouts. This study evaluates the groundwater environmental risks of chemical grouting and focuses on four typical mining grouts (urea-formaldehyde with oxalic/phosphoric acid curing agents, acrylate, epoxy resin, polyurethane) to characterize their leaching behavior, identify contaminant release processes, quantify environmental risks, and clarify rel

Cryptosporidium is an environmentally robust pathogen responsible for severe waterborne disease. As a result, the emergence of Cryptosporidium in surface water has become an increasing concern for drinking water providers. However, simulating Cryptosporidium with available water quality models remains challenging due to its environmental persistence. With limited work available on modeling Cryptosporidium loading, a systematic review is warranted to examine the potential use of water quality models. This review considered twelve water quality models for simulating Cryptosporidium loading, incl

Drinking water quality is a critical factor in poultry production, and suboptimal drinking water can negatively influence immune functions leading to reduced vaccine efficacy. In the field study, we assessed drinking water quality on Alberta layer farms and evaluated its impact on vaccine-induced immune responses. Chemical, physical and microbiological analyses were performed on 26 water samples collected from Alberta layer farms and serological response for poultry viral vaccines were evaluated at the same time. The water hardness, pH, bicarbonates, and dissolved sodium exceeded acceptable li

Agriculture is a major contributor to water pollution through nutrient runoff and excessive water use, exacerbating global water scarcity and ecosystem degradation. Water Quality Trading (WQT) has emerged as a market-based mechanism to address this issue by enabling cost-effective pollution control. However, this study critically evaluates WQT's effectiveness, arguing that it often serves as a financial workaround rather than a transformative solution. Drawing on evidence from the River Alde WQT program in the UK, our discussion highlights key challenges, including pricing volatility, inadequa
