Three-dimensional gallery system reconstruction reveals more frequent intraspecific than interspecific interactions in ambrosia beetles.

Ambrosia beetle gallery systems are typically excavated into the xylem of host trees by a single mated female and are generally considered to function as independent units. However, field observations suggest that interactions among gallery systems may also occur. Using X-ray tomography to obtain three-dimensional reconstructions of ambrosia beetle galleries in flood-stressed and ethanol-injected trees, we found that intersections, where two or more galleries excavated by different females merge at one or more points, and intrusions, where a female begins excavating her gallery from within a g

A supplement to the Scolytinae and Platypodinae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) faunas of Georgia and Kyrgyzstan.

Bark beetles and pinhole borers of Georgia and Kyrgyzstan were surveyed between 2003 to 2025. Specimens were collected using pheromone traps baited with Acuwit, IAC Ecolure, Sexowit, Tomowit, and ethanol; 0.5-m-long logs exposed for bark beetle colonisation; direct hand collecting in the field; searches for potential feeding substrates; and rearing from infested host material. We present 51 faunistic records of bark beetles and pinhole borers, comprising 44 species from Georgia and seven from Kyrgyzstan. One taxon is newly recorded from Georgia: Pityophthoruspityographus cribratus. Finally, we

Comparing the effects of verbenone, methyl salicylate, and permethrin on attacks of ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae Scolytinae) in ornamental nurseries.

The granulate ambrosia beetle, Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky), and the black stem borer, Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) are important pests in ornamental nurseries in the eastern USA. These beetles are managed mainly using preventative trunk applications of pyrethroids, such as permethrin or bifenthrin when females typically fly out of woodlots and attack young trees in the spring. Verbenone and methyl salicylate are potential phytochemicals reported as repellants but not completely validated in ornamental nurseries for ambrosia beetle management as an alternative option. Thus, this

Chemical and biological investigation of Plectranthus amboinicus essential oil in the control of Sitophilus oryzae L.

The study investigates the potential of Plectranthus amboinicus essential oil as a natural alternative to synthetic insecticides for controlling the rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae), a major pest in stored grains. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed that the oil contains high concentrations of bioactive compounds such as carvacrol, caryophyllene, γ-terpinene, o-cymene, and caryophyllene oxide, which are likely responsible for its insecticidal effects. The fumigant activity of the oil showed considerable efficacy, with lethal concentration (LC50) values of 48.28 µL L-1

Analysis of potential volatile organic compounds in Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)-infested wheat based on lipid oxidation-a reference to early and rapid detection method.

The maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, is a hidden pest that presents serious risk to grain quality during postharvest storage. Lipid-derived volatile detection is considered a key reference for early prediction of S. zeamais infestation. However, the exact compositions of fatty acids and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in S. zeamais-infested wheat are yet to be determined. In this study, we aimed to explore the effect of S. zeamais infestation on lipid metabolism in wheat infested with S. zeamais eggs (4 days), larvae (20 days), pupae (35 days), and adults (45 days). Mortality of Bark- and Wood-boring Beetles (Coleoptera: Buprestidae, Cerambycidae, and Curculionidae) in Naturally Infested Heat-treated Ash, Birch, Oak, and Pine Bolts.

Firewood and wood packaging material (WPM) are major pathways for moving bark- and wood-infesting insects (borers). Heat treatment regulations for interstate firewood movement vary among U.S. states: from 56°C for 30 min to 71.1°C for 75 min. Current WPM international standards (ISPM 15) require heating to a minimum of 56°C for 30 min throughout the profile of the wood. Using bolts from infested ash (Fraxinus), birch (Betula), oak (Quercus), and pine (Pinus) trees in Michigan, we assessed borer mortality at core temperatures of 50, 53, 56, and 60°C maintained for 30 min in chambers set to 60,

Spinosad and Mixtures of an Entomopathogenic Fungus and Pyrethrins for Control of Sitona lineatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in Field Peas.

The pea leaf weevil, Sitona lineatus L., is an important pest of field peas and faba beans in most temperate regions. As no information is currently available on efficacy of biopesticides for S. lineatus control, laboratory bioassays were performed to evaluate the impact of biopesticides (spinosad, Beauveria bassiana strain GHA, pyrethrins, B. bassiana GHA + pyrethrins, and B. bassiana GHA + azadirachtin) against adults of this pest. The concentrations used in this bioassay were 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 times the lowest labeled application rate of each product. Results were further verified in c

Diel Patterns of Activity for Insect Pollinators of Two Oil Palm Species (Arecales : Arecaceae).

The pollination of two oil palm species, Elaeis guineensis Jacquin and Elaeis oleifera Cortés (Arecales: Arecaceae), depends on a mutualistic relation with insects, which use male inflorescences as a brood site, and visits female inflorescences lured by the emitted odor, which is similar to that of males. Although the activity of visiting the inflorescences by these insects is critical for the adequate natural pollination of the host plant, their activity is poorly documented. In the present study, we determine the diel activity of two specialized pollinator weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

Perceptions of ecological risk associated with mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) infestations in Banff and Kootenay National Parks of Canada.

Western Canada is experiencing an unprecedented outbreak of the mountain pine beetle (MPB). The MPB has the potential to impact some of Canada's national parks by affecting park ecosystems and the visitor experience. Controls have been initiated in some parks to lessen the impacts and to prevent the beetle from spreading beyond park boundaries. We examine the perception of ecological risk associated with MPB in two of Canada's national parks, the factors affecting perceptions of risk, and the influence of risk judgments on support for controlling MPB outbreaks in national parks. Data were coll

Orthosinus medogensis sp. nov. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Dryophthorinae) from Xizang, China, with notes on the synonymy of Xerodermus Lacordaire under Orthosinus Motschulsky.

Orthosinusmedogensissp. nov., collected in Mêdog County, Xizang Autonomous Region, is described and illustrated. Morphologically, the new species is most similar to O. dudkoi but can be distinguished by the larger body size, shallow transverse sulcus between frons and rostrum, more rugose surface of the rostrum, and parallel-sided form of the pedon. Furthermore, this study addresses the long-standing taxonomic controversy regarding Xerodermus by treating it as a junior synonym of Orthosinus based on the re-examination of published type images, which reveal that the key diagnostic character of

Semiochemicals produced by fungal bark beetle symbiont Endoconidiophora rufipennis and the discovery of an anti-attractant for Ips typographus.

Bark beetles vector symbiotic fungal species into their host trees during mass attacks. The symbiotic relationship with blue stain fungi of the Ascomycetes, including genera of Endoconidiophora (syn. = Ceratocystis), promotes successful establishment whereby the microbes help to overcome the host trees' defence and degrade toxic resins. This is the first study to evaluate both the volatile emissions from an insect-associated blue stain fungus over time and the insect response in a field trapping experiment. Volatile emissions from isolates of Endoconidiophora rufipennis (ER) were collected by

Discovery and functional characterization of novel cotton promoters with potential application to pest control.

pGhERF105 and pGhNc-HARBI1 promoters are highly responsive to CBW infestation and exhibit strong activity in vegetative and reproductive tissues, increasing their potential application in GM crop plants for pest control. The main challenge to cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) crop productivity is the constant attack of several pests, including the cotton boll weevil (CBW, Anthonomus grandis), which uses cotton floral buds for feeding and egg-laying. The endophytic nature of the early developmental stages of CBW makes conventional pesticide-based control poorly efficient. Most biotechnological assets

Potential of contact insecticides to control Xyleborus glabratus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a vector of laurel wilt disease in avocados.

Xyleborus glabratus Eichhoff (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) is an invasive ambrosia beetle that vectors laurel wilt, a new disease that threatens avocado and other species in the Lauraceae Family. The lethal concentrations (LC50 & 90) of nine commercial insecticides to X. glabratus were determined by using a bolt-dip bioassay. Different formulations of bifenthrin, permethrin, fenpropathrin, z-cypermethrin + bifenthrin, 1-cyhalothrin + thiamethoxam, malathion, chlorpyrifos, carbaryl, and methomyl were tested. Four concentrations of each insecticide were tested (0.5, 0.1, 0.03, and 0.01

Red turpentine beetle: innocuous native becomes invasive tree killer in China.

The red turpentine beetle (RTB), Dendroctonus valens LeConte (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), is a secondary pest of pines in its native range in North and Central America. Outbreaks and tree mortality attributed to RTB alone are rare in its native range. RTB was introduced into China in the early 1980s and spread rapidly from Shanxi Province to four adjacent provinces; it has infested over 500,000 ha of pine forest and has caused extensive tree mortality since 1999. We provide a historical background on RTB outbreaks, explanations for its invasive success, management options, and econ

Environmental impact assessment of dicationic ionic liquids with ammonium-phosphonium cations and amino acid anions.

Progress in the development of biodegradable or biobased ionic liquids (ILs) has led to the design of green compounds for several applications. Herein, four biocompatible dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) with ammonium-phosphonium cations and amino acid anions were synthesized and investigated their environmental impact. The structures of the DILs were confirmed by spectral analyses (1H, 13C and 31P NMR). Furthermore, physicochemical properties such as density, viscosity and refractive index were determined. Water content, bromide content and solubility were thereafter determined as the paramete

Fungal diversity of Norway spruce litter: effects of site conditions and premature leaf fall caused by bark beetle outbreak.

Fungi play an important role in leaf litter decomposition due to their ability to break down the lignocellulose matrix, which other organisms are unable to digest. However, little is known regarding the factors affecting components of fungal diversity. Here, we quantified richness of internal fungi in relation to litter nutrient and phenolic concentrations, sampling season (spring or fall), and premature leaf shedding due to low precipitation and infestation of bark beetles (mainly Ips typographus and Ips duplicatus). The study was conducted in 37-year-old Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst

Edge effects concentrate Conotrachelus nenuphar (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) oviposition with consequences for larval performance and fruit yield.

Edge-associated distributions of animals are common in natural and managed landscapes, where habitat contrasts influence species densities, behavior, and population dynamics. In agricultural systems, field edges often concentrate insect pests and their associated damage, yet whether edge aggregation enhances pest performance or creates density-dependent constraints remains unclear. We investigated this relationship in the North American tree fruit pest, plum curculio, Conotrachelus nenuphar (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), by quantifying pest spatial distribution, fruit injury, and reproductive pe

An approach for ambrosia beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) management: can low-cost detectors effectively identify ethanol emissions in flood-stressed trees?

Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) are small fungus-farming beetles that damage stressed nursery trees directly through tunneling and structural weakening, and indirectly by introducing pathogenic fungi. Stressed trees emit ethanol, which is the primary host-locating cue for ambrosia beetles. This study evaluated the efficacy of low-cost ethanol detectors as a solution for the early detection of flood-stressed trees susceptible to ambrosia beetle infestation. Experiments were conducted using 48 native dogwoods (Cornus florida L.) subjected to flooded or non-flooded condit
