Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women, and its treatment depends on the type and severity of the disease. Traditional treatments lead to side effects that require searching for alternative treatment methods. Microgravity is one such method that is currently being studied. In summary, exposure of cancer cells to microgravity dramatically changes morphological, biological, and genetic functions and increases the apoptosis rate. In this manuscript, a comprehensive study is conducted on the effects of microgravity on the breast cancer cell line (AMJ13) in terms of extern

Ground-based models of microgravity, head-down bed rest (HDBR) and dry immersion (DI), may differ in their effects on cardiovascular control, but this has not been directly tested yet during similarly long exposure. This study aimed at comparison of head-up tilt (HUT) induced changes in cardiac baroreflex functioning during 3-week long HDBR and DI. HUT test (60°) was performed in two groups of healthy young men before and then on 7th, 14th and 19th days of HDBR or DI. Fifteen-min recordings of systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and RR-interval (RRI) were used to calculate their spectral powers,

Staphylococcus aureus is commonly isolated from astronauts returning from spaceflight. Previous analysis of omics data from S. aureus low Earth orbit cultures indicated significantly increased expression of the Agr quorum sensing system and its downstream targets in spaceflight samples compared to ground controls. In this current study, the rotary cell culture system (RCCS) was used to investigate the effect of low-shear modeled microgravity (LSMMG) on S. aureus physiology and Agr activity. When cultured in the same growth medium and temperature as the previous spaceflight experiment, S. aureu

The history of manned space flight has repeatedly documented the fact that prolonged sojourn in space causes physiological deconditioning. Physiological deterioration has raised a legitimate concern about man's ability to adequately perform in the course of long missions and even the possibility of leading to circumstances threatening survival. One of the possible countermeasures of physiological deconditioning, theoretically more complete than others presently used since it affects all bodily systems, is artificial gravity. Space stations and spacecrafts can be equipped with artificial gravit

Head-to-foot gravitationally induced hydrostatic pressure gradients in the upright posture on Earth are absent in weightlessness. This results in a relative headward fluid shift in the vascular and cerebrospinal fluid compartments and may underlie multiple physiological consequences of spaceflight, including the spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome. Here, we tested three mechanical countermeasures [lower body negative pressure (LBNP), venoconstrictive thigh cuffs (VTC), and impedance threshold device (ITD) resistive inspiratory breathing] individually and in combination to reduce a pos

Astronauts may experience Space Adaptation Syndrome at the primary period in spaceflight. It is widely accepted that it is mainly caused by vestibular adaptive changes. The reverse changes of adaptation present after the return from weightlessness to normal 1 G. It may cause astronauts' postural instability and orthostatic intolerance. Evidences from animal model and some data from humans suggest that the vestibular system have influences on the sympathetic nervous system and cardiovascular control. The inputs that appear to be critical in producing these responses come from otolith receptors.

Emerging research has confirmed the crucial role of autophagy, an endogenous repair mechanism, in various blast injuries. However, its role in explosive ocular injury (EOI) under microgravity (MG) and normal gravity (NG) environments remains poorly understood. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the changes in retinal lesions and retinal autophagy over time following EOI under both NG and MG environments. This study employed the hind-limb unloading model in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats to simulate MG conditions and used self-made device with compressed gas to induce EOI. SD rats were random

Long-duration spaceflight (LDSF) is associated with unique hazards and linked with numerous human health risks including Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS). The proposed mechanisms for SANS include microgravity induced cephalad fluid shift and increased Intracranial Pressure (ICP). SANS is a disorder seen only after LDSF and has no direct terrestrial pathologic counterpart as the zero G environment cannot be completely replicated on Earth. Head-down tilt, bed rest studies however have been used as a terrestrial analog and produce the cephalad fluid shift. Some proposed counter

This work aims at investigating the interactions between the flow of fluids in the eyes and the brain and their potential implications in structural and functional changes in the eyes of astronauts, a condition also known as spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS). To this end, we propose a reduced (0-dimensional) mathematical model of fluid flow in the eyes and brain, which is embedded into a simplified whole-body circulation model. In particular, the model accounts for: (i) the flows of blood and aqueous humor in the eyes; (ii) the flows of blood, cerebrospinal fluid and intersti

The present review aimed to suggest approaches to prospective medical problems related to the health maintenance of space crews during future manned interplanetary, particularly Martian, missions up to 2-3 years with a possible stay on a planet with gravity different from that on Earth. The approaches are based on knowledge so far obtained from our analysis of the medical support of long-term orbital flights up to one year, as well as on the consideration of specific conditions of interplanetary missions. These specific conditions include not only long-term exposure to microgravity, but also a

Space flight provides a model for the study of healthy individuals undergoing unique stresses. This review focuses on how physiological adaptations to weightlessness may affect nutrient and food requirements in space. These adaptations include reductions in body water and plasma volume, which affect the renal and cardiovascular systems and thereby fluid and electrolyte requirements. Changes in muscle mass and function may affect requirements for energy, protein and amino acids. Changes in bone mass lead to increased urinary calcium concentrations, which may increase the risk of forming renal s

Human space travel requires exposure to weightlessness, ionizing radiation, isolation, and austerity. A recent report of internal jugular vein thrombosis in astronauts in low Earth orbit confirms that these exposures also affect vascular biology to influence diseases of thrombosis and hemostasis. This brief review summarizes the known influences of space travel on inflammation, blood coagulation, and the cardiovascular system and conceptualizes how they might combine to affect thrombosis and hemostasis. In the event of a major thrombotic or bleeding emergency, it is anticipated that the unique

Von Baumgarten and his colleagues (23,24) have suggested that asymmetries in otolith function between the left and right labyrinths may result from differences in otoconial mass and could play a role in space motion sickness. Such asymmetries would be centrally compensated for under terrestrial conditions but on exposure to weightlessness the persisting central compensation would produce a central imbalance that could lead to motion sickness. We have used ocular counterrolling as a way of measuring the relative "efficiency" of the left and right otoliths and have compared the ocular counterrol

On 28 June 1969, a macaque monkey was boosted into orbit for a projected 30-day flight. It was aborted after 8 1/2 days and the monkey died 16 hours later. Data collected indicate: Weightlessness and the hypothermia acted to shift blood volume centrally; this provided a strong drive for the reduction of blood volume. Restraint, unusual vestibular sensations, and the continuing polydipsia all acted to disturb the central mechanisms affecting salt and water metabolism; it is probable that the function of the kidney was significantly affected and that an excessive amount of salt was lost. We can

This paper will describe the biomedical support aspects of humans in space with respect to the vestibular system. The vestibular system is thought to be the primary sensory system involved in the short-term effects of space motion sickness although there is increasing evidence that many factors play a role in this complex set of symptoms. There is the possibility that an individual's inner sense of orientation may be strongly coupled with the susceptibility to space motion sickness. A variety of suggested countermeasures for space motion sickness will be described. Although there are no known

With the advancement of manned spaceflight technology, significant progress has been made in the fields of aerospace medicine and space biology to address the needs of astronauts in terms of health, safety, and mission performance. The physiological and pathological changes during microgravity exposure, including perception, response, and adaptation mechanisms, are gradually being unraveled. This study aimed to systematically summarize the common features of various molecules and structures within the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus responsible for sensing microgravity. It further examin

Human pose estimation in orbit is critical for astronaut health monitoring, task assistance, and intelligent human-robot interaction aboard space stations. However, in microgravity, human poses exhibit arbitrary orientations and are often affected by severe occlusion and complex background interference, while the scarcity of annotated in-orbit data makes it difficult to directly transfer models trained on ground-based datasets. Existing semi-supervised methods also lack explicit constraints from human structural topology and pose-related physical priors, which often leads to unreasonable pseud

Carbon dioxide (CO2) levels aboard crewed spacecraft routinely exceed 3,000 ppm, significantly higher than atmospheric concentrations on Earth. Sustained exposure to extreme CO2 (exCO2) at levels above 3,000 ppm can alter plant growth, physiology, and nutritional composition. Yet, few laboratory systems can reliably reproduce these exCO2 concentrations. This protocol describes an accessible and low-cost method for constructing a benchtop growth chamber capable of maintaining stable CO2 levels above 3,000 ppm for plant experiments. The chamber is created by modifying a benchtop incubator to inc

BACKGROUND: The biological effects of spaceflight remain incompletely understood, even in humans (Homo sapiens), and are largely unexplored in non-traditional models such as bdelloid rotifers.
RESULTS: This study analyzes the transcriptomic changes experienced by Adineta vaga, a bdelloid rotifer aboard the International Space Station (ISS), using RNA sequencing. The aim was to investigate the overall effect of spaceflight in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) on these organisms. To this end, new hardware was developed to enable autonomous culturing of rotifers with minimal astronaut intervention. The stud

Long-duration spaceflight missions (including the International Space Station [ISS]) are in one of the most remote and harsh environments humans live and work in. Medical emergencies in space are even more complicated in an already high-risk environment. Despite training, ISS crewmembers face many challenges in diagnosing and managing disease with limited diagnostic capability and equipment on the ISS, restricted medication availability, delayed access to medical professionals; and the latency of space missions. Ocular trauma (e.g., cabin contact with equipment, chemical exposure, and foreign
