Greenhouse gas emissions and control measures for constructed wetland: A systematic review.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) have gained global acceptance as sustainable ecological systems for wastewater remediation, offering economic viability and operational energy efficiency. However, their paradoxical role as significant sources of greenhouse gases (GHG) such as CH4, CO2, and N2O presents an environmental challenge, potentially offsetting their ecological benefits through climate impacts. Here we systematically examine the evolution of CWs technology, analyze global trends in GHG emissions, and current emission flux data. Measured fluxes of CO2, CH4, and N2O from CWs range from 4.32 to

Applicability of different woody plant species to vertical flow constructed wetland.

The plant species used in constructed wetlands are mainly aquatic herbaceous, most of which tend to die during winter in subtropical areas. At present, very few studies have examined the performance of woody plants in constructed wetlands. In order to increase plant diversity and improve purification ability of vertical-flow constructed wetland during winter, 10 woody plant species were tested by establishing the microcosms simulating vertical-flow constructed wetlands. Their applicability was integrally evaluated, on basis of their adaptability, rhizospheric enzyme activity, and rhizospheric

Surface-air exchanges of H2S and SO2 in an urban wetland in eastern China.

Wetlands are widely recognized as hot spots for the emission or deposition of biogenic sulfur gases, including hydrogen sulfur (H2S) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), which significantly affect air quality and climate change. With the expansion of urban wetlands, it is critical to know the roles that urban wetlands played in atmospheric H2S and SO2 budget. In this study, the surface-air exchange fluxes of H2S and SO2 were measured by the Dynamic Flux Chamber (DFC) method in a typical urban wetland in eastern China from Sep 2022 to July 2023. It was found that the urban wetland did not have the expecte

Synergistic removal of sulfamethoxazole and dimethyl phthalate by five constructed wetland substrates.

Frequent detection and joint toxicity of sulfonamides (SAs) and phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in water environment have caused serious health and safety problems that can be reduced by vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW). However, it remains unclear what kind of substrate used in VFCW can synergistically remove SAs and PAEs. In this study, it was determined if biochar, zeolite, vermiculite, peat and sand synergistically removed sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and dimethyl phthalate (DMP) as representatives of SAs and PAEs by using batch and column experiments. The batch experiments showed that pseu

Wetland emission and atmospheric sink changes explain methane growth in 2020.

Atmospheric methane growth reached an exceptionally high rate of 15.1 ± 0.4 parts per billion per year in 2020 despite a probable decrease in anthropogenic methane emissions during COVID-19 lockdowns1. Here we quantify changes in methane sources and in its atmospheric sink in 2020 compared with 2019. We find that, globally, total anthropogenic emissions decreased by 1.2 ± 0.1 teragrams of methane per year (Tg CH4 yr-1), fire emissions decreased by 6.5 ± 0.1 Tg CH4 yr-1 and wetland emissions increased by 6.0 ± 2.3 Tg CH4 yr-1. Tropospheric OH concentration decreased by 1.6 ± 0.2 per cent relati

Geochemical cycle of mercury associated with wet deposition and inflows in a subalpine wetland.

Subalpine wetland is a mercury (Hg) sensitive ecosystem, but there is poor understanding of Hg behavior in this typical wetland. Here, distribution and speciation of Hg in waters of a subalpine wetland (Dajiuhu) in China were investigated, and an initial model of the Hg geochemical cycle in the wetland was established based on Hg mass balance calculations. Concentrations of both total Hg (THg, 9.52 ± 6.61 ng L-1) and total methyl mercury (TMeHg, 0.34 ± 0.44 ng L-1) in the waters during the wet season were higher than in the dry season. The majority of THg was in dissolved form whereas most TMe

Plant traits related to the heavy metal removal capacities of wetland plants.

Plants are the crucial component of floating treatment wetlands (FTWs). However, heavy metal removal capacity varies between plant species, and the relationships between plant traits and differences in removal capacity remain unclear. This study sought to determine: (1) the relationships between plant traits and removal of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn from water, and (2) the relationships between the removal patterns of these metals. Plants of 34 wetland plant species were exposed to heavy metal concentrations common in stormwater for five days, and 20 traits were measured on each plant. Results indicat

Influence of vegetation type and temperature on the performance of constructed wetlands for nutrient removal.

In this study, the influence of vegetation type and environmental temperature on performance of constructed wetlands (CWs) was investigated. Results of vegetation types indicated that the removal of most nutrients in polyculture was greater than those in monoculture and unplanted control. The greatest removal percentages of NH4+-N, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in polyculture were 98.7%, 98.5%, and 92.6%, respectively. In experiments of different temperatures, the removal percentages of NH4+-N, NO3--N, TN and TP in all CWs tended to decrease with the decline of temperature. Esp

Pesticide concentrations in frog tissue and wetland habitats in a landscape dominated by agriculture.

Habitat loss and exposure to pesticides are likely primary factors contributing to amphibian decline in agricultural landscapes. Conservation efforts have attempted to restore wetlands lost through landscape modifications to reduce contaminant loads in surface waters and providing quality habitat to wildlife. The benefits of this increased wetland area, perhaps especially for amphibians, may be negated if habitat quality is insufficient to support persistent populations. We examined the presence of pesticides and nutrients in water and sediment as indicators of habitat quality and assessed the

Methylmercury cycling in High Arctic wetland ponds: controls on sedimentary production.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a potent neurotoxin that has been demonstrated to biomagnify in Arctic freshwater foodwebs to levels that may be of concern to Inuit peoples subsisting on freshwater fish, for example. The key process initiating the bioaccumulation and biomagnification of MeHg in foodwebs is the methylation of inorganic Hg(II) to form MeHg, and ultimately how much MeHg enters foodwebs is controlled by the production and availability of MeHg in a particular water body. We used isotopically enriched Hg stable isotope tracers in sediment core incubations to measure potential rates of Hg(II

Physical gills prevent drowning of many wetland insects, spiders and plants.

Insects, spiders and plants risk drowning in their wetland habitats. The slow diffusion of O(2) can cause asphyxiation when underwater, as O(2) supply cannot meet respiratory demands. Some animals and plants have found a common solution to the major challenge: how to breathe underwater with respiratory systems evolved for use in air? Hydrophobic surfaces on their bodies possess gas films that act as a 'physical gill' to collect O(2) when underwater and thus sustain respiration. In aquatic insects, this feature/process has been termed 'plastron respiration'. Here, we demonstrate the similaritie

Bioaccumulation of trace elements in trophic levels of wetland plants and waterfowl birds.

Present study investigates relationships between total and bioaccessibility of trace elements (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, NI, Pb, V, and Zn) concentrations in sediment and their bioaccumulation in species in Shadegan wetland in southwest of Iran. Bioavailability factor (BAF) and translocation factor (TF) were calculated in plants and trophic transfer factor (TTF) was determined in bird species. For this purpose, sampling of sediments, aquatic plants including Phragmites australis, Typha australis, Scripus maritimus and two bird species encircling Porphyrio porphyrio and globally threatened Marmaronet

Alum application to improve water quality in a municipal wastewater treatment wetland.

Nutrient removal in treatment wetlands declines during winter months due to temperature. A 3-mo (wintertime) mesocosm study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of alum in immobilizing P as well as other nutrients during this period of reduced treatment efficiency. Eighteen mesocosms, triplicate alum, and three controls or no alum were established with either Typha spp., Schoenoplectus californicus, or SAV (Najas guadalupensis-dominated). Alum was delivered by timer at a rate of 0.81 g Al m(-2) d(-1) and parameters measured included: pH, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), total phospho

Evaluation of small-scale constructed wetland for water quality and Hg transformation.

Elevated concentrations of nutrients and mercury (Hg) make Steamboat Creek (SBC) the most polluted tributary of the Truckee River. Since wetlands are considered cost-effective, reliable, and potential sites for methylmercury (MeHg) production, a small-scale wetland system was constructed and monitored for several years in order to quantify both nutrient removal and transformation of mercury. Results indicated seasonal variations in nutrient removal with 40-75% of total nitrogen and 30-60% of total phosphorus being removed with highest removals during summer and lowest removals during winter. Extreme spatial variability and unprecedented methylmercury concentrations within a constructed wetland.

We began monitoring concentrations of both total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in surface water at Stormwater Treatment Area-2 (STA) on July 20, 2000. This 2602 hectare STA was constructed with three independent marshes to remove phosphorus from agricultural runoff and reduce eutrophication in the northern Everglades. However, there was concern that in doing so, STA-2 might inadvertently worsen the existing mercury problem in the Everglades. Accordingly, operating permits stipulated that flow-through operation of these treatment cells could not begin until concentrations of THg and Me

Mosquito and arbovirus activity during 1997-2002 in a wetland in northeastern Mississippi.

The species composition and population dynamics of adult mosquitoes in a wetland near Iuka, MS, were analyzed over a 6-yr period (1997-2002) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection rates of arboviruses determined during five of those years. Blood meals of three likely vector species were identified using a PCR-based method that allows identification of the host to species. Culex erraticus (Dyar & Knab) composed 51.9% of the population during the 6-yr period with 295 females collected per trap night. Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) virus was detected in six ge

Enhanced azo dyes decolorization in bioaugmented floating treatment wetlands using Typha domingensis and Bacillus sp.

The present study evaluated bioaugmented floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) for the effective remediation of textile waste enriched with the azo dyes Synozol Red K3 BS (SR), Synozol Yellow K3 RS, and Synozol Ultra Black DR (SB). Six strains of bacteria (SZ1-SZ6) were isolated, characterized and tested for the ability to decolorize dyes. Of these, the SZ1 strain, Bacillus sp., was observed to have a maximum removal rate of 92% for SR, 89.96% for SY and 54% for SB dyes in shake flask assays. The performance of SZ1 was further optimized under different physicochemical conditions, pH (1, 3, 5, 7,

Nitrogen Input Alters Root Exudation of Kandelia obovata and Nitrogen Cycling in Constructed Mangrove Wetlands.

The role of mangrove root exudates in mediating the nitrogen cycle, particularly under high dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) input, in coastal ecosystems remains unclear. This research investigated variation in the root exudates, and nitrogen transformation and output, in constructed mangrove wetlands planted with Kandelia obovata under high, moderate, and low nitrogen-input levels (PCWs-H, PCWs-M, and PCWs-L, respectively). PCWs-H promoted increased root density and biomass accumulation, enhancing soil nitrogen sequestration, whereas PCWs-L induced greater specific root length, specific roo

Seasonal influence on the efficacy of aquatic macrophytes as potential phytoremediation agents in urban wetlands.

Globally, metal contamination raises serious concerns within aquatic ecosystems. In aquatic systems, metal contamination can be removed by phytoremediation. This study assessed the ability of four macrophyte species (i.e. Phragmites australis, Typha capensis, Cyperus papyrus, and Cyperus dives) for phytoremediation of metals from five different wetlands across three seasons (i.e. cool-dry, hot-wet, hot-dry). In addition, this study used the bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) to determine the accumulation and translocation of metals within macrophyte species. The study

Inorganic carbon exports from coastal wetlands can offset part of blue carbon systems' CO2 removal.

Many studies have regarded coastal wetland-derived total alkalinity (TA) as a durable pathway for atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) removal, mainly owing to the formation of bicarbonate during the anaerobic mineralization of biogenic organic matter in wetlands and the subsequent lateral export as TA from intertidal wetlands to the coastal ocean. However, this perspective may overestimate the contribution of wetland lateral carbon export to coastal atmospheric CO2 removal because these ecosystems commonly also export equal or larger amounts of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) alongside TA. Using
