Differences in executive functioning in children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Children with either fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) display deficits in attention and executive function (EF) and differential diagnosis of these two clinical groups may be difficult, especially when information about prenatal alcohol exposure is unavailable. The current study compared EF performance of three groups: children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure (ALC); nonexposed children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); and typically developing controls (CON). Both clinical groups met diagnostic criteria for ADHD.

Effects of crack cocaine on neurocognitive function.

Because crack cocaine appears to have a preferential effect on the metabolic and electrophysiological activity of the frontal and temporal regions of the brain (Pascual-Leone et al., 1991a, 1991b; Volkow, 1992), we hypothesized that cognitive measures of those regions would be impaired in crack cocaine users relative to measures in normal volunteers. We used logistic regression to determine the relationship of cocaine usage to neuropsychological test performance. We compared 38 patients with an average of 3.6 (SD = 2.5) years of crack cocaine use and 24.5 (SD = 28.1) days of abstinence to 54 n

History of childhood physical trauma is related to cognitive decline in individuals with ultra-high risk for psychosis.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between childhood trauma (CT) and cognitive functioning in individuals with ultra-high risk for psychosis (UHR). Fifty-three individuals at UHR for psychosis were administered a neurocognitive battery that assessed attention, processing speed, verbal learning, memory, working memory, interference inhibition, and sustained attention. The CT was assessed using the short-version Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). We dichotomized the sample by using cut-off scores for the presence of emotional, physical and sexual trauma, and physical an

Aging-related changes in cognitive flexibility: fMRI meta-analysis.

Cognitive flexibility-the ability to adaptively shift between different mental processes-is essential for human functioning. This meta-analysis examines age-related changes in neural correlates of cognitive flexibility using two common assessments: the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (rule-discovery) and Task-Switching Paradigm (rule-retrieval). We synthesized findings from 85 articles comprising 118 experiments with 2246 participants across young, middle-age, and older adult groups. Activation Likelihood Estimation analyses revealed an age-related decrease in neural involvement, particularly in p

Is overestimation of body size associated with neuropsychological weaknesses in anorexia nervosa?

BACKGROUND: Recent research indicates some evidence of neuropsychological weaknesses in visuospatial memory, central coherence and set-shifting in adults with anorexia nervosa (AN). The growing interest in neuropsychological functioning of patients with AN is based upon the assumption that neuropsychological weaknesses contribute to the clinical features of the illness. However, due to a paucity of research on the connection between neuropsychological difficulties and the clinical features of AN, this link remains hypothetical. The main objective of this study was to explore the association be

Executive functioning pattern as a prognostic indicator for shunt implantation surgery in patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus - A preliminary report.

The problem of executive functions in patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) was investigated in the study. Executive function parameters were assumed to be among factors that may differentiate the clinical pattern in NPH. Two major indicators of executive functioning, i.e. flexibility and productivity of thinking, were assessed in neuropsychological examination using the Trail Making Test (TMT), Verbal Fluency Test (COWAT), and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Participants in the study were 18 patients with NPH divided using a set of diagnostic criteria into two subgroups: w

Impaired recognition of social emotion in patients with complex regional pain syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Multiple brain areas involved in nociceptive, autonomic, and social-emotional processing are disproportionally changed in patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Little empirical evidence is available involving social cognitive functioning in patients with chronic pain conditions. We investigated the ability of patients with CRPS to recognize the mental/emotional states of other people. Forty-three patients with CRPS and 30 healthy controls performed the Reading Mind in the Eyes Test, which consists of photos in which human eyes express various emotional and mental sta

White matter microstructural abnormalities in patients with late-onset schizophrenia identified by a voxel-based diffusion tensor imaging.

Reduced fractional anisotropy (FA) has been previously found in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies of white matter in schizophrenic patients. However, there are no reports in the literature that address FA alterations in late-onset schizophrenia (LOS). The current study measured FA in whole white matter and subsequently analyzed its association with psychotic symptoms in LOS. DTI was carried out in 20 patients with LOS and 17 age-, gender- and education-matched healthy subjects. Fractional anisotropy in different areas of white matter was compared between groups using a voxelwise analysis

Executive dysfunction in medicated, remitted state of major depression.

BACKGROUND: Past neuropsychological studies on depression have documented executive dysfunction and it has been reported that some dysfunction persists even after depressive symptoms disappear. Studies have shown a correlation between cerebrovascular lesions and executive dysfunction in depression among the elderly. The aim of the present study was to focus on executive functions in remitted major depressive disorder (MDD) patients, and to investigate whether remitted young and elderly patients show different patterns of executive dysfunction, and to ascertain the relationships with vascular l

Memory and executive functions in adults with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and chronic tic disorder.

INTRODUCTION: The main aim of the current study was to assess whether adults with either Tourette syndrome (TS) or chronic tic disorder (CTD) show a similar neuropsychological profile. Neuropsychological investigations of tic disorders have been mostly focused on children, mainly because symptoms peak during that period. Little has been carried out on adults, even if a significant proportion of the tic population experience moderate or marked levels of tic frequency throughout adulthood. Still, it is not clear whether neuropsychological performances are affected to the same degree in adults wi

Depression and Cognitive Dysfunction in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis C: Correlation with Viral Replication in the Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells and Cytokines in Serum.

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is commonly associated with depression and cognitive dysfunction, the cause of which could be related to the HCV neuroinvasion and/or state of chronic inflammation. Viral sequences and proteins were previously detected in the brain and since blood leukocytes can cross the blood-brain barrier, they could provide viral access to the CNS. Eighty chronic hepatitis C patients were tested for viral replication in PBMCs (detection of the HCV RNA-negative strand) and serum cytokines. Depression was assessed by the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), neuroticism b

Early developmental delays: neuropsychological sequelae and subsequent diagnoses.

Developmental delay is a frequent diagnosis given to young children when developmental milestones are not met in an age-expected time frame. Research on early delays in speech and motor milestones is unclear regarding possible long-term cognitive functioning. The purpose of this study was to investigate the neuropsychological profile of children who suffered early developmental delays in speech or motor function. Participants (N = 60) completed the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition, Wechsler Individual Achievement Test-Second Edition, Wisconsin Card-Sorting Test, Children
