Characterization of the temporomandibular joint of the gray wolf (Canis lupus) in health and disease.

This study aimed to characterize the histological, biomechanical and biochemical properties of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of the gray wolf (Canis lupus). We also sought to discern the structure-function relationships of the TMJ disc and identify and describe joint pathology that may be found naturally in the wolf. TMJs (n = 22) of fresh cadaver heads (n = 11) of wild gray wolves were examined grossly and microscopically. Two skulls underwent cone beam computed tomography (one male and one female) to assess spatial detail and orientation. The TMJ discs were evaluated for their biomechani

Applying clinically proven human techniques for contraception and fertility to endangered species and zoo animals: a review.

Reversible contraception that does not alter natural behavior is a critical need for managing zoo populations. In addition to reversible contraception, other fertility techniques perfected in humans may be useful, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or oocyte and embryo banking for endangered species like amphibians and Mexican wolves (Canis lupus baileyi). Furthermore, the genetics of human fertility can give a better understanding of fertility in more exotic species. Collaborations were established to apply human fertility techniques to the captive population. Reversible vasectomy might be

Macroanatomical and morphometric study on the skull bones of Aksaray Malakli dogs.

BACKGROUND: The skull is an important anatomical structure to discern dog breeds and wolves from dogs. For this purpose, skull morphology and some morphometric measurements of Malakli dogs, a local breed in the Aksaray region, were examined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two distances were measured and seven ratios calculated in nine skulls of adult dogs. In our study, different morphological features and statistical findings that were not revealed by taking measurements from 32 distinct anatomical points of Aksaray Malakli dog skull bones were determined in accordance with the literature. Self-isolation of adolescents after Covid-19 pandemic between social withdrawal and Hikikomori risk in Italy.

Social withdrawal is a widespread phenomenon among adolescents, presenting significant challenges in understanding its aetiology and dynamics. This study, drawing on data from two cross-sectional surveys conducted in 2019 and 2022 on students in public upper secondary schools, investigates the trend of self-isolation among Italian adolescents before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The two nationally representative samples comprise 3273 and 4288 participants, respectively, with 46.3% and 41.2% identifying as female, ranging in age from 14 to 19 years. Using Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MC

Quantitative analysis of the skull in the Japanese wolf (Canis lupus hodophilax) using CT.

In this study using computed tomography (CT), the volumes of the internal cranial cavities, such as the braincase, frontal sinus and tympanic cavity, and the ratio of the volume of each cavity to the skull volume in Japanese wolves were quantified, and CT images of the frontal sinus were observed. The results were then compared with those of other wolf subspecies, including Akita, a dog breed, to clarify the characteristics of the internal cranial cavities in Japanese wolves. The present study revealed that the Japanese wolf had a relatively larger braincase volume and a relatively smaller fro

Spondylosis deformans as an indicator of transport activities in archaeological dogs: A systematic evaluation of current methods for assessing archaeological specimens.

Over the past several decades archaeologists have used the spinal pathology spondylosis deformans as an indicator that archaeological dogs were used to pull or carry loads. This interpretive approach is largely based upon observations of prehistoric dog remains and archaeologist's interpretations of veterinary literature on recent sled dogs and other draft animals. However, no comparative large-scale studies of the occurrence of spondylosis deformans in wild canids, transport dogs, and dogs never involved in pulling or carrying loads have been published. To evaluate the reliability of spondylo

Osteology and radiology of the Maned Wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) pelvic limb.

This study describes the osteology and radiology of the pelvic limb in maned wolves. Ten (five live and five dead) maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus), five males and five females, aged from 2 to 7 years old were used. Digital radiographs were taken and recorded for both pelvic limbs in all animals. Osteology was correlated with the radiographic images. The pelvis had a rectangular shape, and the obturator foramen (foramen obturatum) was oval. The femoral neck (collum femoris) was short and thick. The greater trochanter (trochanter major) extended proximally to near the dorsum of the femoral

Complete genomic sequence of rabies virus from an ethiopian wolf.

Ethiopian wolves are the rarest canid in the world, with only 500 found in the Ethiopian highlands. Rabies poses the most immediate threat to their survival, causing epizootic cycles of mass mortality. The complete genome sequence of a rabies virus (RABV) derived from an Ethiopian wolf during the most recent epizootic is reported here.

An autochthonous case of cystic echinococcosis in Finland, 2015.

We report a case of pulmonary cystic echinococcosis in a child from eastern Finland with no history of travelling abroad. The cyst was surgically removed and the organism molecularly identified as Echinococcus canadensis genotype G10. This parasite is maintained in eastern Finland in a sylvatic life cycle involving wolves and moose; in the present case, the infection was presumably transmitted by hunting dogs.

Endoparasites in large carnivores (Canidae, Felidae, Ursidae) in the Nearctic and Palearctic-an update with emphasis on the wildlife-domestic animal-human triangle.

Carnivorous wild mammals often harbor a high diversity and high prevalence of parasites, many of which possess zoonotic potential or are of relevance for domestic animal health. In this Chapter, we summarize studies on endoparasites of the most common wild canids (red and arctic foxes, golden jackals, coyotes, grey wolves and raccoon dogs), felids (lynxes and European wildcats) and bears (brown and black bears) in the Palearctic and Nearctic regions since the turn of the millennium. Overall, the red fox stands out as the best-studied species, with the highest endoparasite diversity reported, a

Serosurvey of pathogens in domestic dogs on the border of Noël Kempff Mercado National Park, Bolivia.

The threat of disease transmission from domestic animals to wildlife has become recognized as an increasing concern within the wildlife community in recent years. Domestic dogs pose a significant risk as reservoirs for infectious diseases, especially for wild canids. As part of a multifaceted ecologic study of maned wolves and other canids in the large, remote Noël Kempff Mercado National Park (NKMNP) in northeastern Bolivia, 40 domestic dogs in two villages and at two smaller settlements bordering the national park were sampled for exposure to canine diseases. High levels of exposure were fou

Detection of canine distemper virus in wildlife in Italy (2022-2024).

CDV has been detected in a wide range of domestic and wild animal also in Italy and it is highly prone to cross-species transmission, therefore representing a significant health risk. In this study the presence of CDV and other coinfecting selected viruses, in wild carnivorans of the family Mustelidae and Canidae and rodents of the family Hystricidae, collected in Southern Italy (Campania region), in 2022-2024, was investigated. Over a period of 3 years (2022-2024), tissue samples from 136 wild animals including stone martens, porcupines, otters, wolves, martens, badgers and foxes were examine

New evidence from the northern Apennines, Italy, suggests a southward expansion of Echinococcus multilocularis range in Europe.

Echinococcus multilocularis (Em) is a neglected zoonotic cestode circulating among wild canids and voles across the northern hemisphere, and is the aetiological agent of alveolar echinococcosis in humans. The expansion of the European distribution of this parasite has been raising public health concerns in recent decades. We aimed to investigate the occurrence of Em and other taeniids in wild carnivore faeces in the Apuan Alps Regional Park and the Monte Pisano mountain chain (northern Tuscany), a few hundred kilometres from the nearest report of Em in Italy. Using standard flotation-sieving a

Bartonella clarridgeiae and Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii exposure in captive wild canids in Brazil.

SUMMARY Wild canids are potential hosts for numerous species of Bartonella, yet little research has been done to quantify their infection rates in South America. We sought to investigate Bartonella seroprevalence in captive wild canids from 19 zoos in São Paulo and Mato Grosso states, Brazil. Blood samples were collected from 97 wild canids belonging to four different native species and three European wolves (Canis lupus). Indirect immunofluorescent antibody testing was performed to detect the presence of B. henselae, B. vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii, B. clarridgeiae, and B. rochalimae. Overall,

Genetic Characterization of Canine Adenovirus Type 1 Detected by Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction in an Oral Sample of an Italian Wolf (Canis Lupus).

We report the detection of canine adenovirus type 1 DNA by real-time PCR technique in an oral sample of an Italian wolf (Canis lupus italicus). Genetic characterization of the virus revealed a strict relationship with viruses detected in dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), wolves, and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), suggesting that transmission between wild animals and dogs had occurred.

First Parasitological Data on a Wild Grey Wolf in Turkey with Morphological and Molecular Confirmation of the Parasites.

INTRODUCTION: The grey wolf (Canis lupus) is the natural host of many parasites. These animals travel quite long distances to search for prey and nests, causing parasites to spread over large areas; therefore, determination of the parasites carried by grey wolves is important. METHODS: In this study, we used both morphological and molecular methods for parasitological identification of helminth species. For this purpose, the material obtained after necropsy was examined by macroscopic, microscopic, and molecular (multiplex PCR and DNA sequencing) methods. RESULTS: No pathological lesions and

New techniques for an old disease: sarcoptic mange in the Iberian wolf.

Sarcoptic mange, a parasitic skin infection caused by the burrowing mite Sarcoptes scabiei, has been reported in over 100 mammals, including humans. In endangered species, mange causes conservation concerns because it may decimate isolated populations and contribute to extinction. The Iberian Peninsula still maintains one of the largest wolf (Canis lupus) populations in Europe. In Iberia, sarcoptic mange is endemic in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and the first confirmed wolf mange cases were recently reported. However, knowledge on S. scabiei in wolves is scarce because of the sampling difficulti

Deep sequencing of Korean Jindo dog reveals evolutionary trajectory of coat color variations.

The inherent diversity of canines is closely intertwined with the unique color patterns of each dog population. These variations in color patterns are believed to have originated through mutations and selective breeding practices that occurred during and after the domestication of dogs from wolves. To address the significant gaps that persist in comprehending the evolutionary processes that underlie the development of these patterns, we generated and analyzed deep-sequenced genomes of 113 Korean Indigenous Jindo dogs that represent five distinct color patterns to identify the associated mutati
