[Alexia without agraphia: an exemplary deficit, cherished by neuropsychologists].

Alexia without agraphia is the result of a left inferotemporal cortical lesion. This unilateral lesion provokes an almost irrecoverable word reading disability. This anatomical-clinical observation has identified as crucial an area on the left fusiform gyrus, which represents a sort of "letter cranial bump". This area, located near the left V4, has been labeled the visual word form area (VWFA). The VWFA ensures visual word processing whatever the visual field stimulated. In normal subjects, imaging methods show an activation of the VWFA during reading. In patients, the alexia that follows a VW

Wots that werd? Pseudowords (non-words) may be a misleading measure of phonological skills in young learner readers.

Pseudoword (non-word) reading tasks are a commonly used measure of phonological processing across diverse fields of reading research. However, whether pseudoword reading gives any more information about phonological processing in young learner readers than does the reading of real words has seldom been considered. Here we show that pseudoword and real word reading are so strongly correlated (r=0.94) in the first 4 years of school as to be representative of the same construct. Two of the subskills of phonological processing, phonological awareness and rapid automatic naming also predict almost

Auditory conflict processing: behavioral and electrophysiologic manifestations of the stroop effect.

BACKGROUND: One of the most extensively studied phenomena in cognitive neuroscience is the Stroop effect. In an enormous corpus of literature, the Stroop task has been used to study conflict processing in the visual modality; however, scarce data exist in the auditory modality. PURPOSE: The main goal of the present study was to investigate auditory conflict processing by means of behavioral and electrophysiologic measures elicited during standard and reversed Stroop tasks. A secondary goal was to examine practice-related effects. RESEARCH DESIGN: Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded

Reading Derived Words by Italian Children With and Without Dyslexia: The Effect of Root Length.

Children with dyslexia are extremely slow at reading long words but they are faster with stimuli composed of roots and derivational suffixes (e.g., CASSIERE, 'cashier') than stimuli not decomposable in morphemes (e.g., CAMMELLO, 'camel'). The present study assessed whether root length modulates children's morphological processing. For typically developing readers, root activation was expected to be higher for longer than shorter roots because longer roots are more informative access units than shorter ones. By contrast, readers with dyslexia were not expected to be facilitated by longer roots

Electromyographic activity during typewriter and keyboard use.

This study investigated how ergonomic design influences neck-and-shoulder muscle strain, through keyboard assessment. Muscular activity was measured electromyographically (EMG) from six muscles in the forearm and shoulders of eight experienced typists using each of five different types of keyboard: one mechanical, one electromechanical, and one electronic typewriter; one personal computer/word processor (PC-XT) keyboard; and one angled at 20 degrees in the horizontal plane. The impact on muscular activity of using a palmrest was also studied. The mechanical typewriter induced a higher strain i

Prenatal Cocaine Exposure Impacts Language and Reading Into Late Adolescence: Behavioral and ERP Evidence.

Extant research documents impaired language among children with prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) relative to nondrug exposed (NDE) children, suggesting that cocaine alters development of neurobiological systems that support language. The current study examines behavioral and neural (electrophysiological) indices of language function in older adolescents. Specifically, we compare performance of PCE (N = 59) and NDE (N = 51) adolescents on a battery of cognitive and linguistic assessments that tap word reading, reading comprehension, semantic and grammatical processing, and IQ. In addition, we ex

WordDriver-1: evaluating the efficacy of an app-supported decoding intervention for children with reading impairment.

BACKGROUND: Fluent word reading is a key characteristic of skilled reading, yet most children with reading disorders have impaired word-reading skills. Previous research has demonstrated that multi-component interventions targeting phonemic awareness and the alphabetic principle are effective for children with reading disorders. However, about 25% of children fail to respond to these interventions. While it has been difficult to isolate the active ingredient, the findings of some studies suggest that tasks targeting phonological recoding and orthographic processing are essential elements in im

Impaired phonological and orthographic word representations among adult dyslexic readers: evidence from event-related potentials.

The authors examined the processing of phonological and orthographic word representations among 17 dyslexic and 16 normal college-level readers using Event-Related Potential measures. They focused on 2 early components--the P200 and the P300. The results revealed P200 and P300 components of lower amplitude and later latency among dyslexic readers than among normal readers for both types of word representation. Group differences were greatest for phonological representations. In addition, the authors observed greater time gaps among dyslexic readers than among normal readers between different p

Breakdown of category-specific word representations in a brain-constrained neurocomputational model of semantic dementia.

The neurobiological nature of semantic knowledge, i.e., the encoding and storage of conceptual information in the human brain, remains a poorly understood and hotly debated subject. Clinical data on semantic deficits and neuroimaging evidence from healthy individuals have suggested multiple cortical regions to be involved in the processing of meaning. These include semantic hubs (most notably, anterior temporal lobe, ATL) that take part in semantic processing in general as well as sensorimotor areas that process specific aspects/categories according to their modality. Biologically inspired neu

A case of "order insensitivity"? Natural and artificial language processing in a man with primary progressive aphasia.

Processing of linear word order (linear configuration) is important for virtually all languages and essential to languages such as English which have little functional morphology. Damage to systems underpinning configurational processing may specifically affect word-order reliant sentence structures. We explore order processing in WR, a man with primary progressive aphasia (PPA). In a previous report, we showed how WR showed impaired processing of actives, which rely strongly on word order, but not passives where functional morphology signals thematic roles. Using the artificial grammar learni

Spelling errors reveal underlying sequential and spatial processing deficits in adults with dyslexia.

Recent studies showed that some adults with dyslexia have difficulty processing sequentially arranged information. In a companion study, this deficit manifested as low accuracy during a word pair comparison task involving same/different decisions when two words differed in their letter sequences. This sequential deficit was associated with left/right spatial letter confusion. In the present study, we found the same underlying difficulty with sequential and spatial letter processing during word spelling. Participants were the same 22 adults with dyslexia and 20 age- and gender-matched controls

Faces and words are both associated and dissociated as evidenced by visual problems in dyslexia.

Faces and words are traditionally assumed to be independently processed. Dyslexia is also traditionally thought to be a non-visual deficit. Counter to both ideas, face perception deficits in dyslexia have been reported. Others report no such deficits. We sought to resolve this discrepancy. 60 adults participated in the study (24 dyslexic, 36 typical readers). Feature-based processing and configural or global form processing of faces was measured with a face matching task. Opposite laterality effects in these tasks, dependent on left-right orientation of faces, supported that they tapped into s

Do different components of working memory underlie different subgroups of reading disabilities?

The purpose of this study was to determine the components of working memory (WM) that underlie less skilled readers' comprehension and word recognition difficulties. Performance of 3 less skilled reading subgroups---children with reading disabilities (RD) in both word recognition and comprehension; children with comprehension deficits only; and children with low verbal IQ, word recognition, and comprehension (poor readers)--was compared to that of skilled readers on WM, short-term memory (STM), processing speed, executive, and phonological processing measures. Ability group comparisons showed

Reading aloud in jargonaphasia: an unusual dissociation in speech output.

A patient is described who showed several dissociations between oral and written language processing after bilateral retrorolandic vascular lesion. Dissociation was firstly between abolished auditory comprehension and preserved written comprehension and then involved confrontation naming, clearly superior in the written modality. The third striking dissociation involved oral output; spontaneous speech, although fluent and well articulated, consisted of neologistic jargon, while reading aloud was clearly superior though not perfect. Data are discussed with reference to a cognitive model of word

Neural correlates of lexical stress processing in a foreign free-stress language.

INTRODUCTION: The paper examines the discrimination of lexical stress contrasts in a foreign language from a neural perspective. The aim of the study was to identify the areas associated with word stress processing (in comparison with vowel processing), when listeners of a fixed-stress language have to process stress in a foreign free-stress language. METHODS: We asked French-speaking participants to process stress and vowel contrasts in Spanish, a foreign language that the participants did not know. Participants performed a discrimination task on Spanish word pairs differing either with resp

Poor performance on fast-rate and rapidly alternating speech perception tests is associated with hearing-aid dissatisfaction in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Hearing-aid (HA) satisfaction influences sustained use in older adults, and performance on auditory-processing tests may be associated with HA satisfaction. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To determine whether audiometric and auditory-processing measures are associated with HA satisfaction in individuals with presbycusis and preserved cognition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective review at a tertiary centre. Twenty-two adults (63-88 years) underwent pure-tone audiometry, monosyllabic word recognition, fast-rate speech test (FST) and rapidly alternating speech perception test (RASPT), presente

Neurophysiology of fluent and impaired reading: a magnetoencephalographic approach.

This article reviews a series of magnetoencephalographic (MEG) experiments aimed at identifying cortical areas and time windows relevant or even critical for fluent reading. The approach was to compare single-word processing in fluent and dyslexic readers. The activations which differed between the two groups were then studied in more detail to determine their functional roles. In fluent reading, overall visual feature processing occurs about 100 milliseconds (ms) after seeing a word, in the posteromedial extrastriate cortex bilaterally. This activation does not differentiate between letters a

Aging of lexical selection and phonological encoding in Chinese spoken word production: An EEG study.

Using a picture-word interference paradigm combined with electroencephalography (EEG), this study investigated how healthy aging affects the temporal dynamics of lexical selection and phonological encoding during spoken word production. Younger and older adults named pictures while word frequency, syllable frequency, and phonological relatedness between targets and distractors were systematically manipulated. Behaviorally, older adults exhibited larger word frequency and syllable frequency effects but reduced phonological facilitation relative to younger adults, indicating age-related changes

An experimental eye-tracking study of text adaptation for readers with dyslexia: effects of visual support and word frequency.

Easy-to-read guidelines recommend visual support and lexical simplification to facilitate text processing, but few empirical studies confirm a positive effect from these recommendations in individuals with dyslexia. This study examined the influence of the visual support and lexical simplification on sentence processing through eye movements at both the text- and word-level, and the differences between readers with and without dyslexia. Furthermore, we explored the influence of reading experience and vocabulary, as control variables. We tested 20 young adults with dyslexia and 20 chronological
