PURPOSE: Shift work is a common occupational exposure that disrupts circadian rhythms which increases the risk of unhealthy behaviours and metabolic disorders. Maternal shift work is known to increase the risk of negative pregnancy outcomes, but the health impact when combining father's shift work status remains uncertain. This study investigated the association between parental shift work before pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes, with a focus on the effect estimates of father's shift work.
METHODS: We analysed data from the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study, a prospective cohort of Taiwanese women wh

OBJECTIVES: Extended-duration work rosters (EDWRs) with shifts of 24+ hours impair performance compared with rapid cycling work rosters (RCWRs) that limit shifts to 16 hours in postgraduate year (PGY) 1 resident-physicians. We examined the impact of a RCWR on PGY 2 and PGY 3 resident-physicians.
METHODS: Data from 294 resident-physicians were analyzed from a multicenter clinical trial of 6 US PICUs. Resident-physicians worked 4-week EDWRs with shifts of 24+ hours every third or fourth shift, or an RCWR in which most shifts were ≤16 consecutive hours. Participants completed a daily sleep and w

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology2020eng
BACKGROUND: Night shift work has been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a probable carcinogen in humans. Several studies have assessed night shift work in relation to breast cancer risk, with inconsistent results.
METHODS: In the prospective Sister Study cohort, current and past occupational history was collected for 48,451 participants. We used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate adjusted HRs and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between baseline work schedule characteristics and incident breast cancer.
RESULTS: During follow-up (mean =

The paper deals with the results of studies or discussions concerning the problem of nightwork combined with other adverse working conditions. Special emphasis is laid on the untoward effect of high temperature during nightwork, as well as on noise and exposure to chemicals. It is shown that there is no substantial influence of heat stress on the circadian rhythm of adrenaline excretion under sitting working conditions with the subject performing a difficult mental task at warm climates up to 30 degrees C BET. Shiftwork and noise induce independent different effects which can be explained in t

"Take a break - Time-out for me": A practice project to promote a healthy rest break Abstract. Background: Breaks are essential for physical and mental health. In health care professions breaks are often cancelled or interrupted. Nursing staff should be enabled to take breaks regularly and without any interruptions. They should be given alternative options to organize their breaks. Methods: A pre-post survey was carried out with one group by means of questionnaires. The two break models "Feel good manager" and "I'm away" were tested by the nursing staff, followed by a debriefing meeting. Resul

PURPOSE: Quality sleep is vital for good health. Although it is known that workhours affect sleep quality, it is not known at what point workhours begin to compromise sleep. Few studies consider workhours in the 'other job' (domestic and care work) or address reverse causality between sleep quality and how long people work. This study aimed to estimate the point at which weekly workhours harm sleep, among employed Australians aged 25-64.
METHODS: Using Australian data (19,453 observations from 9,826 adults assessed 2013, 2017, and 2021), a maximum likelihood instrumental variable approach mod

BACKGROUND: In today's world, essential health care services are expected round the clock, leading to distinct shift work requirements. A notable aspect is the "quick return," where the rest interval between nursing shifts is <11 h. Preliminary research suggests a potential association between quick return schedules, diminished sleep quality, and possible nurse burnout. Yet, the motivation of nurses could potentially moderate this relationship.
OBJECTIVE: To examine a moderated-mediation model, whereby sleep duration and nurse's motivation act together to mediate the link between quick return

The aims of this study were to 1) compare the inflammatory potential of night- and day-shift nurses' diets with regard to time of day and work status and 2) explore how the timing of food intake during work and off-work is associated with cardiometabolic syndrome (CMS) risk factors between these two groups. Female nurses (N = 17; 8 day-shift and 9 night-shift) reported food intake over 9 days. On a middle day off of work, metabolic parameters were measured after an overnight fast. Energy/macronutrient intake and inflammatory potential of dietary intake (as assessed via the Dietary Inflammatory

Pediatric surgical subspecialty workforce shortages are here to stay without any expected solution for the short-term. Individual surgeons, hospital administrators, risk management and patient-safety teams need to recognize that patient safety must take precedence over clinical productivity and financial "bottom lines." Pushing attending surgeon work hours beyond the limits of exhaustion impairs patient safety. Just as resident surgeon work hours have been appropriately curtailed in the name of patient safety, so must attending surgeon work hours. This issue needs to be addressed by hospital p

INTRODUCTION: This paper investigates the literature regarding the impact of shift work on prehospital emergency providers. While the issue of shift work has been thoroughly investigated in other health disciplines, this is not the case for the paramedic discipline, particularly in the Australian context.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the literature available on prehospital providers regarding the effects of shift work on sleep.
METHOD: Electronic databases used were the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Ovid MEDLINE, Proquest, AMED and CINAHL. The following MeSH terms and keywords with trun

CONTEXT: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education implemented mandatory work hour limitations in July 2003, partly out of concern for residents' well-being in the setting of sleep deprivation. These limitations are likely to also have an impact on other aspects of the lives of residents.
OBJECTIVE: To summarize the literature regarding the effect of interventions to reduce resident work hours on residents' education and quality of life.
DATA SOURCES: We searched the English-language literature about resident work hours from 1966 through April 2005 using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and C

Sickness absence among the unionised staff of the largest petroleum refinery in Singapore was followed up from 1981 to 1992. The changes seen throughout these 12 years were related to national, organisational and personal factors. Initially because of increasing competitiveness in the industry, and later because of a national recession, manpower in the refinery was progressively reduced from 1981 to 1986. This however was not the main cause of the reduction in sickness absence rates from 8.4 working days in 1981 to 5.8 days in 1983. Organisational changes to medical leave entitlements and impr

BACKGROUND: Sperm DNA fragmentation is an important factor that affects male fertility. This study intends to evaluate the impact of sperm DNA damage [single-strand breaks (SSB) and double-strand breaks (DSB)] on fertilisation and embryonic euploidy after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Of the different sperm selection techniques, the novel microfluidic sperm sorting (MSS) ZyMōt™ ICSI device reduces both SSB and DSB in semen samples. The second objective is to study the impact of this MSS device on fertilisation and embryonic euploidy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study

The study aimed to explore chronotype-specific effects of two versus four consecutive morning or night shifts on sleep-wake behavior. Sleep debt and social jetlag (a behavioral proxy of circadian misalignment) were estimated from sleep diary data collected for 5 weeks in a within-subject field study of 30 rotating night shift workers (29.9 ± 7.3 years, 60% female). Mixed models were used to examine whether effects of shift sequence length on sleep are dependent on chronotype, testing the interaction between sequence length (two vs. four) and chronotype (determined from sleep diaries). Analyses
