Specific elbow and wrist injuries are predictable in the skeletally immature athlete based on the biomechanics of the sport and the age of the patient. The physician must be aware of the potential for overuse injuries. Modification in training regimens is essential for recovery. A greater emphasis must be placed on the prevention of these injuries. As a general rule, the young athlete should not progress more than 10% per week in the amount and frequency of training. Correction of muscle-tendon imbalances is accomplished by maintaining strength and flexibility of susceptible tissues. In throwe

In summary, injuries to the elbow, wrist, and hand are common complaints in emergency department practice. A systematic, thorough examination should be carried out meticulously on each injured patient. Routine radiographs should be taken and any additional views that are needed should be ordered. Most of the commonly missed injuries are due to an inadequate physical examination and inadequate x-ray films of the injured part.

General orthopaedic surgeons should have up-to-date information on the most common types of hand and wrist injuries, including distal radius fractures, scaphoid fractures, proximal interphalangeal joint injuries, scapholunate and perilunate injuries, nerve lacerations, common pediatric upper extremity injuries, and metacarpal and phalangeal fractures. These topics represent a broad swath of the typical pathologies the common hand surgeon will face in their practice. Providing the most up-to-date evidence and rationale for current treatments should help clinicians identify current themes in the

INTRODUCTION: Effective vascular anastomosis is crucial for successful hand surgery, particularly in traumatic injuries where rapid restoration of blood flow is essential. The Synovis microvascular anastomotic coupler system presents a novel approach by potentially offering faster and more reliable outcomes than traditional suturing methods. This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness and safety of the Synovis coupler for microvascular anastomoses in the wrist, evaluating anastomosis time, patency rates, and complication rates.
METHODS: This retrospective study examined 25 microvascu

INTRODUCTION: wrist ligament injuries and triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) lesions are common but often underdiagnosed conditions causing chronic wrist pain. The diagnostic challenge necessitates a combination of clinical examination, imaging studies, and arthroscopy, considered the gold standard. Ligament injuries, particularly scapholunate ligament (SL), and TFCC lesions account for significant wrist instability and ulnar-sided wrist pain, respectively.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: this retrospective observational study, conducted at Hospital Ángeles Pedregal, Mexico City, aimed to assess

BACKGROUND: Combined injuries of ipsilateral wrist and elbow joints are rare in clinical practice, characterized by multiple joint dislocations or/and fractures and varying manifestations. As there are still no clinical guidelines and no consensus on the standard treatment, this study aimed to explore the surgical intervention and complications of this kind of combined injuries.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in a single center. A total of 13 patients with acute combined injuries of the ipsilateral wrist and elbow joints receiving surgical treatment from August 2013 to May 20

INTRODUCTION: Triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injuries are associated with distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability and impaired wrist proprioception. Sensorimotor training of extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) and pronator quadratus (PQ) can enhance DRUJ stability. With limited evidence on effectiveness of TFCC sensorimotor rehabilitation, this study aimed to evaluate the effects and feasibility of a novel wrist sensorimotor rehabilitation program (WSRP) for TFCC injuries.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with TFCC injuries were recruited from May 2018 to January 2020 at an outpatient hand c

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the hand and wrist are estimated to account for between 10% and 30% of all ED presentations. The economic burden placed on the healthcare system can be extensive and rise sharply with increase in injury severity.
OBJECTIVES: This cost-analysis was performed with the aim of estimating the economic implications of ED attendances for hand and wrist injuries from the perspective of one Australian public health network.
METHODS: Data from two EDs were retrieved from the electronic billing records of one large health network across two financial year periods (2014-2015 and

The aim of this study was to emphasize the importance of early surgical treatment of multicomponent soft tissue injuries of the wrist. A retrospective review was performed on 156 patients with multicomponent soft tissue injuries of the wrist who were treated between July 2007 and July 2015. All the patients included in the study were operated within the first 36hours of the injury and were hospitalized after the surgery based on the extent of their injury. The patients were evaluated in terms of age, gender, etiology, injured structures, total number of damaged structures, mean follow-up time,

The aim of this study was to better quantify the role of delayed MRI scans in acute wrist injuries, and to assess the prevalence and distribution of multiple occult injuries of the wrist. A retrospective study was made of all patients who had been referred to the orthopaedic trauma clinic for a possible scaphoid fracture and with normal radiographs over a two year period. There were 110 patients. Patients were initially treated conservatively with a scaphoid cast or a futura splint for two weeks. This was then removed and the wrist examined and further radiographs taken. The patients with norm

This study aims (1) to assess the prevalence and distribution of multiple occult injuries of the carpal bones and the distal forearm in patients with wrist pain and negative radiographs following trauma and (2) to evaluate the distribution and significance of joint effusions in the wrists with multiple osseous injuries. One hundred and thirty-one subjects, 74 men and 57 women, were consecutively examined in two institutions. All were acute trauma patients with negative X-rays whose clinical examination suggested possible fracture at the wrist or the distal forearm. Magnetic resonance (MR) wris

Osteoarthritis of nonknee joints, although less common than knee osteoarthritis, remains a significant and disabling condition for many present and former athletes. These injuries can be caused by repeated loads or following a specific traumatic event. The resulting pain and loss of motion can limit function and ability. Arthroscopic techniques in many cases enable surgeons to symptomatically treat limitations of range of motion and pain, prolonging active careers. Joint replacement remains the ultimate solution for hip osteoarthritis, and may be a viable option in ankle osteoarthritis.

A simple custom-made soft splint has been devised to allow safe sports participation for significant hand and wrist injuries. Made from readily available materials, this "rubber splint" has been used successfully in 113 injuries reviewed in this report. This splint is a result of a modification of an original "Duke" splint described by Dobson, Davis, Lincoln, and Basset, (Exhibit at American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, San Francisco, California, 1971) and the soft cast used at the University of Virginia by McCue and Gieck (personal communication).
