Augmentative and alternative communication (Baltimore, Md. : 1985)2010eng
Studies addressing the cognitive processes of writing (i.e., planning, translating, reviewing, monitoring) as applied to individuals with complex communication needs were reviewed. Studies meeting inclusion criteria were identified through searching multiple electronic databases and summarized according to participants, cognitive process(es) addressed, tasks and measures, and principal findings. Twenty-five studies were identified in peer-reviewed journals, 12 of them descriptive studies of spelling abilities in augmentative communication, five addressing spelling intervention, and eight addre

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with dementia (ALS-D) is known to exhibit characteristics of frontotemporal dementia. However, in clinical situations, it is often difficult to evaluate their cognitive functions because of impaired voluntary speech and physical disabilities. In order to identify characteristic and diagnostic cognitive symptoms of relatively advanced ALS-D patients, we retrospectively reviewed the clinical features of seven cases of clinically definitive ALS who had dementia, impaired voluntary speech, and physical disability. Their medical records showed that six out of sev

Descriptions concerning "hernia" can be found from the early historical years, and its treatment was a subject mentioned by numerous physicians of Antiquity, such as Hippocrates and Praxagoras of Kos. Yet, Aulus Cornelius Celsus, a famous doctor and encyclopedist of the first century AD, was among the first to propose surgical treatment and carry it out successfully, according to his accounts. Many physicians attempted to treat several types of "hernia" before him, but more "scientific" information with details and complete descriptions could be found only in Celsus' work. In his book De Medic

In the therapy process, the process of disclosing about stressful or traumatic events is often considered essential. One such manner is through focused expressive writing (FEW) about stressful or traumatic experiences. FEW is related to improvements in health and well-being, across a wide array of outcomes and participant characteristics. As FEW requires limited involvement of other individuals, is relatively low cost, and portable, it has tremendous potential as self-help. In particular, FEW may be an effective means to reach populations unwilling or unable to engage in psychotherapy. A case

Sixty native-born Swedish unemployed participants with reading and writing disabilities (R&WD) participated in a 20-week educational program aimed at improving reading and writing, verbal memory, self-confidence, and flexibility of perspectives. They were tested with a comprehensive battery (interviews, questionnaires, neuropsychological tests, and tests of academic achievement) before and after the intervention. Sixteen controls, matched for sex, age, education, and nonverbal IQ, participated in the pre- and posttest sessions but received only standard unemployment interventions. The educatio

Two laboratory studies have investigated how handwriting ability and holding a cup of liquid depend on the characteristics of whole-body vertical vibration. The effects of vibration magnitude (0.16 to 2.5 ms-2 r.m.s.), vibration frequency (0.5 to 10 Hz), and vibration duration (2 cycles to 10 s) on handwriting were studied with 20 subjects. Subjects were asked to copy letters of the alphabet by writing on a hand-held surface. Writing speed decreased and subjective ratings of writing difficulty increased with increasing vibration magnitude, particularly in the frequency range 4 to 8 Hz. Writing

Recordings of early and late auditory evoked potentials and spectral analysis of scalp EEGs of 14 eight- and nine-year-old boys with difficulties in reading, writing and spelling were compared with those of 18 matched controls. The recordings of the poor readers lacked the normal asymmetry of central conduction time and wave amplitude in the early (brainstem) auditory evoked potentials, and late (cortical) evoked potential components were reduced in amplitude. Spontaneous EEG activity was significantly increased in power in all spectral bands, and this activity was less responsive to changes i

Doyle's medical writings represent a valuable contribution to both the scientific and nonscientific aspects of medicine of the late 19th Century. Up to the present, accounts of these writings have been few, and none of them have been evaluative of their scientific merit. Analysis of Doyle's writings on infectious diseases in particular reveals a remarkable insight, for the 1880s, into the bacterial causation of disease and prevention through immunization.

BACKGROUND: Given the central role of writing and typing in contemporary communication, integrating writing assessments into clinical practice is crucial for improving the diagnosis and management of primary progressive aphasia (PPA). This scoping review summarizes evidence on writing abilities in PPA, examining task types, their strengths and limitations, the linguistic features of stimuli, and the influence of language differences.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted using the Google Scholar and PubMed databases. We included papers published in peer-reviewed journals and written in E

Kindergarten writing involves acquiring fundamental skills, such as letter formation, phonemic awareness, and the gradual use of written language to express ideas. In this context, tablet-based curriculum assessments present new opportunities for teaching and evaluating these early writing abilities. To the best of our knowledge, there is currently no tool with these features available for Spanish-speaking children. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to present a tablet-based protocol for screening at-risk young writers. This tablet-based protocol is specifically designed for k

Current pulse driven Néel vector rotation in metallic antiferromagnets is one of the most promising concepts in antiferromagnetic spintronics. We show microscopically that the Néel vector of epitaxial thin films of the prototypical compound Mn2Au can be reoriented reversibly in the complete area of cross shaped device structures using single current pulses. The resulting domain pattern with aligned staggered magnetization is long term stable enabling memory applications. We achieve this switching with low heating of ≈20 K, which is promising regarding fast and efficient devices without the nee

Immunosuppression optimization is central to graft function in liver transplant recipients. Post-transplantation patients develop new onset or worsening metabolic syndrome, are prone to atypical infections, and are at higher risk of developing cardiac and brain-related clinical events. In this context, liver transplant recipients are at risk of using multiple comedications alongside immunosuppressants. It is imperative for the transplant physician to understand the various drug-drug interactions that potentially reduce or promote toxicity of immunosuppression, as well as associated synergistic

Telerehabilitation has proved to be a useful tool for neurodevelopmental disorders in allowing timely and intensive intervention and preventing relapses; it is also widely used for specific learning disabilities (SLD), showing significant effects on reading abilities, but variables linked to its effectiveness have not been studied yet. The present study was aimed at testing the effectiveness of telerehabilitation on reading and writing in SLD children, comparing different treatment pathways, and considering the impact of training intensity and executive functions. Seventy-three children were e

Expository paragraph writing is difficult to learn and teach. For many students, particularly those with learning disabilities, it is difficult to manage the multiple, simultaneous complex processes required for success. And for their teachers, writing is the content area in which they feel least prepared to teach. This intervention applied the concept of reverse engineering to instructional design to teach expository paragraph writing using a color-cued graphic organizer. The study evaluated the effects of using a systematic color code to highlight the alignment of where ideas originate in a

Action tremor in Parkinson's disease may present in up to 46% of patients, either as postural or kinetic tremor. How action tremor may affect handwriting has been the object of some investigations; however, clinical features of writing tremor in Parkinson's disease are still not well-characterised. One hundred consecutive patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease were included in the study. Demographic and clinical data were collected through a standardized questionnaire. Patients were assessed for the presence of rest, action and writing tremor in on condition. The effect of a standardised

This article explores the relationship between eating disorders and reading behaviors, arguing that there is a meaningful difference in a minority of readers' approach to and understanding of anorexia life-writing, and of literary texts more broadly. To illuminate this distinction, this article begins by considering the reported deleterious influence of Marya Hornbacher's anorexia memoir, Wasted, elaborating the ways Hornbacher offers a positive presentation of anorexia nervosa that may, intentionally or not, induce certain readers to "try it" themselves. This is followed by an exploration of

Primary writing tremor is a task associated tremor which occurs during and interferes with handwriting. Considered in most cases to be a nonprogressive disorder, a number of patients are significantly debilitated by the disease. The pathophysiology of the disorder is not fully understood, but felt to represent a variant of either essential tremor or dystonia versus a separate entity. Treatment has been limited to medications, writing devices and botulinum toxin type A for most patients. Recently, deep brain stimulation has been reported in a few patients as an effective option for those patien

The International Dyslexia Association defines dyslexia as unexpected problems of neurobiological origin in accuracy and rate of oral reading of single real words, single pseudowords, or text or of written spelling. However, prior research has focused more on the reading than the spelling problems of students with dyslexia. A test battery was administered to 122 children who met inclusion criteria for dyslexia and qualified their families for participation in a family genetics study that has been ongoing for over a decade. Their parents completed the same test battery. Although a past structur

We report a 32-year-old male patient with early-onset Parkinson's disease who exhibited abnormally increased writing activity. The patient displayed a disabling and pronounced increased writing activity, filling up to 10 pages or more per day in a notebook, and spending more than 12 h writing. In general, there was not much meaning in most of the writing, though there was a particular preference in tabulating the names of various sport and TV personalities. The writing activity gradually diminished following treatment with quetiapine hydrochloride, an anti-psychotic agent, at 25 mg/day. Althou
