A test of ecophysiological theories on tropical forest functional traits along a VPD gradient.

Forest primary production is a crucial process for both ecosystem functioning and global carbon cycling. Primary production responds to both temperature and vapour pressure deficit (VPD) through separate mechanisms. Vegetation models need to quantify both responses. However, due to their often high correlations, most observational data sets used to test models or theories hardly distinguish them. Here we evaluate ecophysiological theories on the effect of VPD using tree trait data collected along a VPD gradient in West Africa. Study sites spanned an annual rainfall range of 1200-2050 mm, with

Sensory Receptors Associated with the Labial Tip and Precibarium of Philaenus spumarius L. (Hemiptera: Aphrophoride).

The meadow spittlebug, Philaenus spumarius (Linnaeus) (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae), is an important vector for the xylem-limited bacterium Xylella fastidiosa (Wells, Raju, Hung, Weisburg, Mandelco-Paul, and Brenner), which is associated with olive quick decline syndrome in southern Italy. The mouthparts of Hemiptera have important roles in host plant selection, feeding behavior and for vectoring pathogens that cause plant diseases. In this study, the functional morphology of the sensory structures located on the labium tip and precibarium of P. spumarius was investigated using scanning and trans

OsMGT1 Confers Resistance to Magnesium Deficiency By Enhancing the Import of Mg in Rice.

Magnesium (Mg) is an essential nutrient element for plant growth and plays an important role in numerous physiological and biochemical processes. Mg deficiency inhibits plant growth and has become a growing problem for crop productions in agriculture. However, the molecular mechanisms for the resistance to Mg deficiency in plants were not well understood. In this study, we identified a Mg transporter gene OsMGT1 that confers resistance to Mg deficiency in rice (Oryza sativa). The expression of OsMGT1 was highly induced by Mg deficiency in shoots. Investigation of tissue expression patterns rev

Soil water-holding capacity mediates hydraulic and hormonal signals of near-isohydric and near-anisohydric Vitis cultivars in potted grapevines.

Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) expresses different responses to water stress, depending not only on genotype, but also on the influence of vineyard growing conditions or seasonality. Our aim was to analyse the effects on drought response of two grapevine cultivars growing on two soils, one water draining (WD) containing sand 80% volume and the other water retaining (WR), with no sand. Under these two different water-holding capacities Syrah, displaying a near-anisohydric response to water stress, and Cabernet Sauvignon (on the contrary, near-isohydric) were submitted to water stress in a pot tr

Loss of UBIQUITIN-PROTEIN LIGASE 3 (UPL3) impairs cellulose-xylan structural organization in Arabidopsis seed mucilage.

Arabidopsis thaliana seeds release large capsules of mucilaginous polysaccharides, whose adherence depends not only cellulose and hemicellulose biosynthesis but also their interactions. However, the key proteins regulating the connection within this polysaccharide network in the seed coat mucilage remain unclear and require further investigation. Through reverse genetics, we demonstrate that UBIQUITIN-PROTEIN LIGASE 3 (UPL3), a nucleus-localized, HECT E3 ligase protein, is required for the proper organization of cellulosic rays in seed coat mucilage. Disruption of UPL3 results in an enlarged s

Integrative analysis of the CLE gene family identifies GhTDIF and GhCLE14 as key regulators of cotton fiber secondary cell wall thickening.

Clavata3/embryo surrounding region-related (CLE) signaling peptides constitute a family of small peptides that play pivotal roles in plant growth and development as well as in responses to environmental cues, serving as key regulators of cell proliferation and differentiation across diverse plants. In this study, we conduct a genome-wide characterization of CLE genes in Gossypium hirsutum and identify two CLE genes highly expressed during the cotton fiber secondary wall thickening stage: GhTDIF and GhCLE14. Silencing of the GhCLE genes results in abnormal leaf morphology. Histological sectioni

Localized nitrate uptake by NRT1.8 antagonizes root meristem growth inhibition upon cadmium stress.

Heavy metal pollution and overuse of nitrogen fertilizer have essentially deteriorated soil environments, though how these two factors interact with each other to impact plant growth remains largely unknown. Here, we reported polar localization of NRT1.8 towards the soil side at epidermal cells adjacent to lateral root caps (LRC). The combined treatment of Cd and high nitrate induced NRT1.8 expression at root tips, leading to uptake of more NO3- from LRC into inner cells, meanwhile, unloading of NO3- from the xylem to collaboratively maintain NO3- level in the root tip. The root length and mer

Salicylic Acid and Its Boron Complexes as Quorum Sensing Molecules.

This perspective provides a comprehensive review of salicylic acid (SA) and its boron complexes, emphasizing their biological significance. Research suggests that SA forms boron complexes with water-soluble compounds, including sugars, glycerol, and organic acids, aiding in its systemic transport in plants via xylem and phloem saps. Moreover, SA possesses antibacterial properties, while its boron complexes display quorum sensing inhibition and antibiofilm activity. Through an in silico study using the self-consistent extreme classifier (SCEC), we analyzed the effects of these compounds on quor

Bulked segregant analysis reveals candidate genes responsible for dwarf formation in woody oilseed crop castor bean.

Plant dwarfism is a desirable agronomic trait in non-timber trees, but little is known about the physiological and molecular mechanism underlying dwarfism in woody plants. Castor bean (Ricinus communis) is a typical woody oilseed crop. We performed cytological observations within xylem, phloem and cambia tissues, revealing that divergent cell growth in all tissues might play a role in the dwarf phenotype in cultivated castor bean. Based on bulked segregant analyses for a F2 population generated from the crossing of a tall and a dwarf accession, we identified two QTLs associated with plant heig

A native fungal symbiont facilitates the prevalence and development of an invasive pathogen-native vector symbiosis.

Invasive pathogen-insect symbioses have been extensively studied in many different ecological niches. Whether the damage of symbioses in different introduced regions might be influenced by other microorganisms has, however, received little attention. Eight years of field data showed that the varied levels of the nematode and beetle populations and infested trees of the invasive Bursaphelenchus xylophilus--Monochamus alternatus symbiosis were correlated with patterns in the isolation frequencies of ophiostomatoid fungi at six sites, while the laboratory experiments showed that the nematode prod

Ectopic expression of foxtail millet zip-like gene, SiPf40, in transgenic rice plants causes a pleiotropic phenotype affecting tillering, vascular distribution and root development.

Plant architecture determines grain production in rice (Oryza sativa) and is affected by important agronomic traits such as tillering, plant height, and panicle morphology. Many key genes involved in controlling the initiation and outgrowth of axillary buds, the elongation of stems, and the architecture of inflorescences have been isolated and analyzed. Previous studies have shown that SiPf40, which was identified from a foxtail millet (Setaria italica) immature seed cDNA library, causes extra branches and tillers in SiPf40-transgenic tobacco and foxtail millet, respectively. Lipopolysaccharide mobility in leaf tissue of Arabidopsis thaliana.

Bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are triggers of defence responses in plants, and induce local as well as systemic acquired resistance. Arabidopsis thaliana plants pretreated with LPS show an increased resistance to the virulent bacterial plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000. To investigate the mobilization and transport of LPS in Arabidopsis leaves, fluorescently labelled LPS (Alexa Fluor® 488 conjugate) from Salmonella minnesota was used. Leaves were pressure infiltrated with fluorescein-labelled LPS and fluorescence microscopy was used to follow the movement and localiza

Visualizing the distribution of curcumin in the root of Curcuma longa via VUV-postionization mass spectrometric imaging.

Curcumin is a dietary spice and coloring agent widely used in food and herbal medicine. Herein, we visualized the distribution of curcumin in fresh Curcuma longa (turmeric) root sections using the state-of-the-art vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV, 118 nm) single photon-postionization mass spectrometric imaging method. Compared with other mass spectrometric imaging methods, the proposed method does not require any sample pre-treatment. The proposed approach could be more conducive to in situ detection of small molecules. The mass spectroscopic imaging (MSI) images of curcumin sections with a lateral res

Generalized hydromechanical model for stomatal responses to hydraulic perturbations.

Stomata respond in a common pattern to various hydraulic perturbations on any part of the 'soil-plant-air' system: initial transient 'wrong-way' responses and final stationary 'right-way' responses. In order to describe this pattern on the basis of statistical physics, we propose a simple model where turgor pressure of a cell is taken to be a power function of its volume, and obtain results in qualitative agreement with experimental data for responses to a variety of hydraulic perturbations: Firstly, stationary stomatal conductance as a function of the vapor pressure deficit divides into three

The Role of Low-Molecular-Weight Organic Acids in Metal Homeostasis in Plants.

Low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) are essential O-containing metal-binding ligands involved in maintaining metal homeostasis, various metabolic processes, and plant responses to biotic and abiotic stress. Malate, citrate, and oxalate play a crucial role in metal detoxification and transport throughout the plant. This review provides a comparative analysis of the accumulation of LMWOAs in excluders, which store metals mainly in roots, and hyperaccumulators, which accumulate metals mainly in shoots. Modern concepts of the mechanisms of LMWOA secretion by the roots of excluders and hype

Lignin biosynthesis and accumulation in response to abiotic stresses in woody plants.

Woody plants have to experience various abiotic stresses due to their immobility and perennial characteristics. However, woody plants have evolved a series of specific regulation pathways in physiological and molecular mechanisms to deal with adverse environments. Compared with herbaceous plants, perennial woody plants have the advantages of developed roots and hard stems, and increased secondary xylem, which can strengthen the vascular system of the plants. The lignification process involves the lignin deposition on the cell wall by oxidation and polymerization of lignin monomer, which plays

Evidence for salicylic acid signalling and histological changes in the defence response of Eucalyptus grandis to Chrysoporthe austroafricana.

Eucalyptus species are cultivated for forestry and are of economic importance. The fungal stem canker pathogen Chrysoporthe austroafricana causes disease of varying severity on E. grandis. The Eucalyptus grandis-Chrysoporthe austroafricana interaction has been established as a model system for studying Eucalyptus antifungal defence. Previous studies revealed that the phytohormone salicylic acid (SA) affects the levels of resistance in highly susceptible (ZG14) and moderately resistant (TAG5) clones. The aims of this study were to examine histochemical changes in response to wounding and inocul

Effects of Cadmium Treatment on the Uptake and Translocation of Sulfate in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic and non-essential element for plants, whereas phytochelatins and glutathione are low-molecular-weight sulfur compounds that function as chelators and play important roles in detoxification. Cadmium exposure is known to induce the expression of sulfur-assimilating enzymes and sulfate uptake by roots. However, the molecular mechanism underlying Cd-induced changes remains largely unknown. Accordingly, we analyzed the effects of Cd treatment on the uptake and translocation of sulfate and accumulation of thiols in Arabidopsis thaliana Both wild type (WT) and null muta

Increasing CO2 concentration promoted the biomass accumulation but decreased the mineral nutrition and forage quality of Leymus chinensis.

The global atmospheric CO2 concentration is predicted to increase from the current approximate 450 to 700 ppm by end of this century. To evaluate its potential impact on sustainability of grassland, Leymus chinensis, the dominant wild forage species in the eastern Eurasian Steppe, was cultivated in two growth chambers for a month with ambient 450 ppm (aCO2) as the control and elevated 700 ppm CO2 (eCO2) as simulation of the future respectively. The eCO2 increased the aboveground biomass, net photosynthesis rate and contents of carbohydrates, as well as the Mn contents in the leaves. The eCO2 d
