The copepod Acartia spinicauda feeds less and dies more under the influences of solar ultraviolet radiation and elevated pCO2.

While solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is known to impact zooplankton, little has been documented on its impacts under elevated pCO2. Here, we show that exposure to UVR decreased the feeding and survival rates of the copepod Acartia spinicauda, that artificial UV-B of 2.25 W·m-2 for 4 h resulted in a 52 % inhibition of its grazing rates and a 45 % reduction in survival rates compared to visible light alone. On the other hand, an increase in pCO2 to 1000 μatm (pH drop of 0.4) immediately and significantly increased the UVR-induced inhibition of feeding. Subsequently, the combination of the hig

Biomagnification of mercury in selected species from an Arctic marine food web in Svalbard.

Concentrations and biomagnification of total mercury (TotHg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) were studied in selected species from the pelagic food web in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. Twelve species of zooplankton, fish and seabirds, were sampled representing a gradient of trophic positions in the Svalbard marine food web. TotHg and MeHg were analysed in liver, muscle and/or whole specimens. The present study is the first to provide MeHg levels in seabirds from the Svalbard area. The relative MeHg levels decreased with increasing levels of TotHg in seabird tissues. Stable isotopes of nitrogen (delta(15)N

What lies beneath the ice? How gadolinium affects Cyclops abyssorum during Alpine winters.

The increasing anthropogenic release of gadolinium (Gd) from medical contrast agents raises concern regarding its fate and ecotoxicological effects in freshwater ecosystems. Gd may reach alpine lakes through atmospheric deposition, entering environments already fragile due to extreme conditions. This study examined the sublethal effects of Gd on the alpine copepod Cyclops abyssorum under simulated winter conditions (4 °C, darkness). Organisms were exposed for 14 days to 1-150 µg/L Gd, and oxidative stress biomarkers were measured. Glutathione peroxidase activity increased with concentration, w

Phytoplankton community and chlorophyll a as trophic state indices of Lake Skadar (Montenegro, Balkan).

BACKGROUND, AIMS AND SCOPE: Phytoplankton, as a first step in trophic cascades of lakes, can be a good indicator of trophic states, considering that every environmental change affects this community and many species of this community are sensitive to changes, and that they response very quickly. In this study, we tried to assess and predict the trophic state of Lake Skadar according to phytoplankton data. METHODS: Water samples were collected using Ruttner sampling bottle. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, ph, conductivity and transparence were measured in situ using portable equipment. Nutrient

Trophic ecology of moonfish in southwest Taiwan: Insights from stable isotopes and stomach content approach in connection to marine environmental factors.

Moonfish (Mene maculata) has been recognized as a prospective commercial species in Taiwanese waters; however, its diet and trophic ecology remain poorly understood. It was hypothesized that diet composition and trophic position (TP) vary with body size and monsoonal environmental changes. This study presents the first investigation of its feeding ecology in southwest Taiwan (SWT), focusing on seasonal and ontogenetic variation. A total of 2329 individuals collected from September 2021 to May 2024 were analyzed using stomach content analysis (SCA) and stable isotope analysis (SIA). Eight zoopl

The Scientific Legacy of the CARIACO Ocean Time-Series Program.

The CARIACO (Carbon Retention in a Colored Ocean) Ocean Time-Series Program station, located at 10.50°N, 64.66°W, observed biogeochemical and ecological processes in the Cariaco Basin of the southwestern Caribbean Sea from November 1995 to January 2017. The program completed 232 monthly core cruises, 40 sediment trap deployment cruises, and 40 microbiogeochemical process cruises. Upwelling along the southern Caribbean Sea occurs from approximately November to August. High biological productivity (320-628 g C m-2 y-1) leads to large vertical fluxes of particulate organic matter, but only approx

[Spatial and biogeographic characterization of macroalgal assemblages from Bahía del Rincón, Baja California Sur, Mexico].

Macroalgal studies in Baja California Sur have dealt mainly with occurrence and seasonality, but some areas are poorly known even for these basic data. Bahia del Rincón-La Rivera is an important high-productivity fisheries area where coastal infrastructure development is under way. A spatial characterization of the marine flora from Bahia del Rincón-La Rivera was done by intensive sampling at different depths and localities with skin and SCUBA diving. At least 500 m2 were surveyed in each site. Additionally. quantitative sampling was done in ten random 25 cm2 quadrates per site. In the interti

An investigation of enhanced mercury bioaccumulation in fish from offshore feeding.

We investigated the dietary pathways of mercury transfer in the food web of Morency Lake (Canada) to determine the influence of carbon source and habitat use on mercury bioaccumulation in fish. Whole-body concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg) were significantly different in four fish species (white sucker, brown bullhead, pumpkinseed and smallmouth bass) and increased with both trophic position and greater feeding on offshore (versus littoral) carbon. An examination of fish gut contents and the depth distribution of invertebrates in Morency Lake showed that smallmouth bass and brown bullhead

Multinational, freshwater biomonitoring programs in the developing world: lessons learned from African and Southeast Asian river surveys.

Biomonitoring programs are widely used in developed countries. They also offer many advantages in assessing ecological consequences of perturbations in developing countries, including reducing the equipment-operation, maintenance, and training costs associated with physicochemical monitoring. Three case histories of river biomonitoring using freshwater organisms (fish, benthic macroinvertebrates, diatoms, zooplankton) are described that involve (1) documentation of environmental effects from long-term, large-scale applications of insecticides to control insect-vectors of river blindness (oncho

Laboratory-Scale Evaluation of a Plant-Based Algaecide for Harmful and Non-Harmful Algae.

Harmful algal blooms can negatively impact freshwater, estuarine, and coastal marine systems globally and pose serious risks to water quality, human and ecosystem health, and food production. Algae can produce toxic compounds, directly interfere with aquaculture species through (e.g.,) the production of foam or mucilage, as well as causing diseases and disorders in fish, and can result in hypoxic conditions when the bloom senesces. Application of US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) registered algaecides can be effective, scalable, and inexpensive, but there is growing interest in plant-

Investigation of pharmaceutical bioaccumulation in Daphnia sp. living in a wastewater treatment plant.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most widely used pharmaceuticals. Their presence in natural waters is due to the low removal efficiency in conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Interestingly, certain zooplankton species can survive the mixture of pollution and abnormal water conditions in WWTPs. In our study, for the first time, we tested the in-situ bioaccumulation of NSAIDs and their metabolites in Daphnia pulex, which were obtained in high numbers in one WWTP during the summer. It was found that diclofenac (DCF) and 4-hydroxy DCF were present in the

Selective organomercury determination by ICP-MS made easy.

A fast and cost-effective procedure based on Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the selective determination of methylmercury (MeHg) is proposed and validated for fish tissue analysis. Selectivity for MeHg is achieved by simply inserting a strong anion exchange resin to block inorganic mercury as negatively charged chloride species, leaving MeHg unretained. The procedure features a 15 min extraction time followed by a 100 s analysis time achieving a limit of detection of 1.6 μg kg-1 on solid samples. The effect of the solution composition and inorganic mercury concentra

How community ecology can improve our understanding of cholera dynamics.

Understanding the seasonal emergence and reemergence of cholera is challenging due to the complex dynamics of different protagonists. The abundance of Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of cholera and a natural inhabitant of aquatic environments, fluctuates according to abiotic, and biotic factors. Among the biotic factors, the zooplankton community dynamics has been suggested to play a pivotal role in the survival, persistence, and natural competence of V. cholerae. However, factors regulating V. cholerae population structure and seasonal dynamics are still not fully understood. Investigati

Environmental reservoirs of Vibrio cholerae and their role in cholera.

In the aquatic environment, Vibrio cholerae has been reported to be associated with a variety of living organisms, including animals with an exoskeleton of chitin, aquatic plants, protozoa, bivalves, waterbirds, as well as abiotic substrates (e.g. sediments). Most of these are well-known or putative environmental reservoirs for the bacterium, defined as places where the pathogen lives over time, with the potential to be released and to cause human infection. Environmental reservoirs also serve as V. cholerae disseminators and vectors. They can be responsible for the start of an epidemic, may b

Complex analysis of marine particles of various nature using a submersible digital holographic camera at a drifting arctic station.

The paper presents the results of a complex analysis of marine particles collected during the SP-42 drifting expedition (October 2024 - March 2025) aboard the ice-resistant platform "SEVERNY POLIUS" (IRP). Data were acquired using the DHC-FOCL probe, which includes a digital holographic camera. The study aims to obtain in situ time series of mesozooplankton concentration, investigate its diurnal rhythm under polar night conditions, quantify the anthropogenic trace of the IRP, and generate a high-quality dataset of Arctic Ocean marine particles for further neural network training. This made it

Grazer-induced bioluminescence gives dinoflagellates a competitive edge.

Bioluminescent dinoflagellates grow at one third the rate of their competitors of equivalent size, such as diatoms [1]. Despite this disadvantage, dinoflagellates successfully persist within phytoplankton communities and even form large blooms during favourable conditions. One explanation for this paradox is that bioluminescence acts as a defence that reduces losses to zooplankton grazers, such as copepods [2,3]. Lindström et al.[4] found that the dinoflagellate Lingulodinium polyedra (F.Stein) J.D.Dodge increase their bioluminescence in response to copepodamides [5], polar lipids exuded by co

Indicators of sediment and biotic mercury contamination in a southern New England estuary.

Total mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were analyzed in near surface sediments (0-2 cm) and biota (zooplankton, macro-invertebrates, finfish) collected from Narragansett Bay (Rhode Island/Massachusetts, USA) and adjacent embayments and tidal rivers. Spatial patterns in sediment contamination were governed by the high affinity of Hg for total organic carbon (TOC). Sediment MeHg and percent MeHg were also inversely related to summer bottom water dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations, presumably due to the increased activity of methylating bacteria. For biota, Hg accumulation was influenced b

Therapeutic potential of marine macrolides: An overview from 1990 to 2022.

The sea is a vast ecosystem that has remained primarily unexploited and untapped, resulting in numerous organisms. Consequently, marine organisms have piqued the interest of scientists as an abundant source of natural resources with unique structural features and fascinating biological activities. Marine macrolide is a top-class natural product with a heavily oxygenated polyene backbone containing macrocyclic lactone. In the last few decades, significant efforts have been made to isolate and characterize macrolides' chemical and biological properties. Numerous macrolides are extracted from dif

Quorum sensing contributes to natural transformation of Vibrio cholerae in a species-specific manner.

Although it is a human pathogen, Vibrio cholerae is a regular member of aquatic habitats, such as coastal regions and estuaries. Within these environments, V. cholerae often takes advantage of the abundance of zooplankton and their chitinous molts as a nutritious surface on which the bacteria can form biofilms. Chitin also induces the developmental program of natural competence for transformation in several species of the genus Vibrio. In this study, we show that V. cholerae does not distinguish between species-specific and non-species-specific DNA at the level of DNA uptake. This is in contra

Transcriptomic Insights into the Life-History and Population Responses of Brachionus plicatilis to Artificial Light at Night.

Artificial light at night (ALAN), intensified by coastal urbanization, is an emerging threat to coastal ecosystems. We used the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and its prey Phaeocystis globosa as a model predator-prey system to examine rotifer life-history traits, predator-prey dynamics, and transcriptomic responses under varying ALAN intensities. ALAN altered maturation timing without affecting lifespan, and it reduced fecundity, population growth, and clearance rate, thereby delaying the depletion of P. globosa. Transcriptomic and network analyses showed that rotifers exposed to ALAN exhibited
