BACKGROUND: Abnormal anatomy frequently results in the use of a modular stem in patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). However, because these stems are not always available in the operating room, it would be helpful if standard radiographic views could be analyzed in such a way that patients whose femoral anatomy might call for stem modularity could be anticipated before surgery. To our knowledge, no such parameters have been defined.

This review seeks to update the state of the art of axial psoriatic arthritis (axPsA). The definition and assessment of axPsA can be problematic because no agreement and no definitive data on this topic have been published, resulting in uncertainty as to the best approach to deal with these patients. A few recent scientific reports show new data on the possible coincidence of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis and axPsA, as well as on the radiological assessment as measured with the validated instruments for axPsA. Moreover, the role of magnetic resonance imaging has also been evaluated

BACKGROUND: Posterior shoulder instability resulting from a disruption of the posterior capsular structures has been reported. We present the largest series of these injuries in the published literature, propose a definition and highlight the clinical presentation, radiological findings, and associated injuries.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of a single shoulder surgeons database was performed identifying posterior instability cases associated with disruption of the posterior capsule. Chart, radiological imaging, and intra-operative findings were reviewed.
RESULTS: Nineteen p

This article discusses imaging techniques for visualization of the temporomandibular joint. Conventional plain film modalities are discussed briefly, with an emphasis on the more contemporary modalities, such as CT with cone-beam technology, MRI, and nuclear imaging, including single-photon emission computed tomography, and positron emission tomography. Indications, advantages, and limitations are discussed. As advancements in this area continue, our understanding of this complex joint and its pathology will follow, which will lead to more defined imaging indications and ultimately, to improve

We encountered a case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-induced septic arthritis after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. A 20-year-old woman underwent left double-bundle ACL reconstruction by use of the hamstring tendon 18 months after her injury. She had a fever higher than 39 degrees C, and swelling of the left knee developed on day 5 after surgery. The white blood cell count was 19,500/microL, and the C-reactive protein level was 16.9 mg/dL. Arthroscopic debridement with joint lavage was performed on day 7, followed by intermittent articular irrigation. Be

OBJECTIVE: Synovial fluid effusions and/or arthritis may be found in patients with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (CLT), even in the absence of hypothyroidism. Sometimes these arthropathies can be attributed to the rheumatic diseases frequently associated with CLT, but in some instances the arthritis seems to be independent of any of the diseases known to cause arthritis, and therefore remains unclassified. This study was carried out in an attempt to characterize the type and outcome of arthritis associated with CLT.
METHODS: We performed a prospective study with a follow-up of 6.42 years (r

A new method was devised for the evaluation of medial and lateral splaying of the foot on dorsoplantar radiographs made while the patient is bearing weight. This method involves use of a two-dimensional coordinate system; the axis of the shaft of the second metatarsal is the x axis, the intersection of the x axis with the proximal end of the second metatarsal is the point of origin, and the perpendicular to the x axis that passes through the point of origin is the y axis. This method was used to study the radiographs of 177 feet of 112 female patients who had symptomatic hallux valgus and thos

beta 2-microglobulin amyloidosis is a major complication in chronic hemodialysis patients. Destructive arthropathy, spondylarthropathy, and carpal tunnel syndrome are clinical manifestations of beta 2M amyloid depositions within the joints, intervertebral discs, and tendon sheets. We have investigated the prevalence of beta 2M amyloidosis associated radiological joint lesions in a population of 175 patients on chronic hemodialysis. In 32 of 175 patients the diagnosis of amyloidosis arthropathy and spondylarthropathy was made by radiomorphological criteria. These 32 patients were asked about rh

Background: Hamate-lunate impingement or osteoarthritis can be a cause of ulnar-sided wrist pain. In the literature, the lunate has commonly been classified according to the configuration of its distal articular surface into type 1 and type 2, as described by Viegas. A type 1 lunate possesses only a distal articular surface for the capitate, while a type 2 lunate shows an additional medial facet articulating directly with the hamate. Type 2 lunates have been identified as a risk factor for ulnar-sided wrist pain and the development of osteoarthritis in the midcarpal wrist. However, this does n

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Superior labrum anterior posterior (SLAP) lesion of the shoulder joint occurs in throwing athletes as a results of overuse, such as from repetitive baseball pitching. Nonsurgical treatments are usually the first-line therapy for symptomatic SLAP lesion. However, some patients cannot obtain satisfactory improvement of their symptoms, leading to dysfunction of the shoulder and diminished pitching performance. The purpose of this study was to analyze factors that influence outcomes of nonsurgical treatments for SLAP lesion.
METHODS: Forty-five baseball players with SLAP les

Hip dysplasia and hip joint deformities in general are recognized as possible precursors of osteoarthritic development. Early and correct identification of hip dysplasia is important in order to offer timely joint preserving treatment. In the contemporary literature, several controversies exist, and some of these were the focus of this doctoral thesis. Categorized into subjects, the major findings and their possible importance are listed below. DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT OF HIP DYSPLASIA: A multi-observer study quantified the variability of different methods for diagnostic assessment of hip dysplas

The basic material for the evaluation of the results of a conservative treatment of DDH was a group of children at Ist Orthopaedic Clinic in the period of 1984-1994. In total 80 children were treated there, of this 69 girls and 11 boys. The right hip joint was affected 25times, the left hip joint 41 times, bilateral dislocation occured 14times.The evaluation covered in total 94 hip joints. In parents congenital dysplasia of hip joint occurred in case of 23 children, i. e. 28,5 %. The treatment followed immediately the diagnosis of the dislocation, on average at the age of 3.3 months of the chi

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the 5-year incidence of cervical spine disorders in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated by 2 different disease modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) strategies.
METHODS: In a national, multicenter, prospective FIN-RACo-trial, a cohort of 199 patients with early, clinically active RA was randomly assigned to treatment with a combination of 3 DMARD and prednisolone (Combi group) or with a single DMARD (Single group) with or without prednisolone, aiming to induce remission. After 2 years, the DMARD therapy was unrestricted. Lateral view cervical spine radi

Tears of the scapholunate ligament are usually diagnosed during an arthro-CT or arthro-MRI examination. Typically, the contrast agent passes from one joint to the other. In certain cases, fibrous scar tissue devoid of any mechanical effect may block the passage and lead to an erroneous interpretation of the images. We reviewed retrospectively patients who underwent arthroscopic treatment for scapholunate tears and who had normal arthro-CT images. We searched for specific aspects suggestive of ligament injury. Analysis of the arthro-CT images demonstrated that a bulge of the scapholunate ligame

The infrapatellar fat pad or Hoffa's fat pad is a cylindrical extrasynovial collection of fat located in the infrapatellar region. Anatomical, biomechanical and imaging data show that the infrapatellar fat pad constitutes a true crossroads between patella, femur and tibia and helps in understanding if not describing regional pathology. Intrinsic lesions (with abnormal signal on MRI) such as hoffitis, anterolateral impingement, plica syndrome, post-arthroscopic changes, trauma, patellar dislocation and extrasynovial tumors are less frequent. On the other hand, extrinsic lesions are more frequen
