OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the importance of neopterin levels in brucellosis and its alterations with treatment.
METHODS: Thirty patients who had positive clinical findings, Brucella standard tube agglutination tests and/or positive blood culture were included in the study. The control group was composed of 30 healthy subjects. Neopterin (NPT) levels were measured by ELISA according to the protocol of manufacturer.
RESULTS: Mean NPT levels were 54.15+/-33.7 nmol/l in study groups and 8.75+/-2.48 nmol/l in controls (P<0.001). It was determined that NPT levels measured a

OBJECTIVES: Brucella endocarditis is an underdiagnosed complication of human brucellosis, associated with high morbidity and mortality. We report the successful management of a number of cases of Brucella mellitensis endocarditis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seven consecutive cases of Brucella mellitensis endocarditis were treated over the last 20 years, based on high suspicion of the disease at first place. The early suspicion of Brucella endocarditis relied on medical history and a standard tube agglutination titer > or =20. Blood and/or cardiac tissue cultures were positive in all patients, but

To cause disease, Brucella species have to adapt to a range of different environments. Environmental sensing and adaptive responses in bacteria often involve the concerted action of a two-component regulatory system, consisting of sensor and response regulator components. Amplification and sequence analysis of response regulators from Brucella species identified a response regulator sequence with 96% similarity to Rhizobium leguminosarum FeuP. In R. leguminosarum, the FeuPQ two-component system is involved in the regulation of iron uptake. A Brucella suis feuP isogenic mutant was constructed b

Right atrial appendage (RAA) thrombus is an uncommon but clinically significant source of pulmonary embolism (PE). Unlike left atrial appendage thrombi, which are well described, RAA thrombi remain under-recognized and may present with life-threatening embolic complications. Multimodality imaging plays a critical role in establishing the diagnosis and guiding management. We describe the case of a 32-year-old male soldier with a one-month history of fever, cough, and weight loss following recent dental infections. He presented as hemodynamically stable but with anemia, leukocytosis, and elevate

Brucellosis is a zoonotic infection that can present with a wide range of systemic manifestations. Hepatic involvement is usually mild; however, in rare cases, it can result in focal lesions such as brucellar microabscesses or brucellomas. These may closely mimic hepatic malignancies or other infectious etiologies on imaging, particularly in patients with underlying chronic liver disease, posing a significant diagnostic challenge. We report the case of a 55-year-old Saudi male with a history of type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cirrhosis secondary to metabolic dysfunction-associated

Stabilized sewage sludge is applied to agricultural fields and farmland due to its high organic matter content. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two types of sludge stabilization, mesophilic anaerobic digestion (MAD) and thermophilic anaerobic digestion (TAD), on bacterial communities in sludge, including the presence of pathogenic microorganisms. Bacterial community structure and phylogenetic diversity were analyzed in four sewage sludge samples from the Czech Republic. Analysis of 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes showed that investigated sludge samples harbor diverse bac

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by brucella. It has been an increasing trend in recent years (Wang H, Xu WM, Zhu KJ, Zhu SJ, Zhang HF, Wang J, Yang Y, Shao FY, Jiang NM, Tao ZY, Jin HY, Tang Y, Huo LL, Dong F, Li ZJ, Ding H, Liu ZG, Emerg Microbes Infect 9:889-99, 2020). Brucellosis is capable to invade multiple systems throughout the body, lacking in typical clinical manifestations, and easily misdiagnosed and mistreated.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a male, 5-year-and-11-month old child without relevant medical history, who was admitted to hospital for 20 days

An unusual feature of lipid A from plant endosymbionts of the Rhizobiaceae family is the presence of a 27-hydroxyoctacosanoic acid (C28) moiety. An enzyme that incorporates this acyl chain is present in extracts of Rhizobium leguminosarum, Rhizobium etli, and Sinorhizobium meliloti but not Escherichia coli. The enzyme transfers 27-hydroxyoctacosanate from a specialized acyl carrier protein (AcpXL) to the precursor Kdo2 ((3-deoxy-d-manno-octulosonic acid)2)-lipid IV(A). We now report the identification of five hybrid cosmids that direct the overexpression of this activity by screening approxima

A retrospective study was conducted in Abergele and Ziquala districts in Ethiopia to investigate the occurrence, impact, and potential risk factors for abortion in small ruminants linked to a regional abortion storm. Affected (case) and nonaffected (control) villages were compared to assess infectious and noninfectious risk factors causing abortions. A case village was defined as a village with abortion seen in all households enrolled in the study, while a control village is characterized by presence of abortion in two and fewer households. A questionnaire survey, focus group discussions, and

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease that can result in symptoms including infertility, abortion, testicular inflammation, and arthritis in affected sheep and cattle. The disease can spread through a range of mechanisms, making outbreaks difficult to control such that affected farms often suffer severe economic losses. In addition, humans can be affected by brucellosis, and the number of cases continues to rise annually. As rates of brucellosis in Xinjiang, China have been increasing substantially in recent years, this study was developed to assess brucellosis seroprevalence among herds of cattle

Sheep were domesticated around 9000 BC in the Middle East, and since then milk from sheep gradually became very popular, not only for drinking but also for making cheeses and other dairy products. Nowadays, these dairy products are also important for people with an allergy to cow milk, and these products are an essential part of the local daily diet in regions of the world that are not suitable for cows and goats. Consumption of raw milk and raw milk products has a zoonotic risk, and with regard to sheep, the main pathogens associated with such dairy products are: Brucella melitensis, Campylob

Recently, the human activities including economic growth and urbanization posed serious environmental health risks to the Jiulong River Watershed (JRW). In order to gain a full understanding of the distribution of potential pathogenic bacteria (PPB) in this area, we used 16S rRNA amplicon pyrosequencing technology to investigate planktonic and benthic bacterial community in two main tributaries (North River, NR, and West River, WR) of the Jiulong River (JR). At the genus level, a total of 68 genera of PPB were identified in JR, which accounted for 6. 1% of total gene sequences. Clostridium, My

BACKGROUND: Both endocarditis and Bartonella infections are neglected public health problems, especially in rural Asia. Bartonella endocarditis has been described from wealthier countries in Asia, Japan, Korea, Thailand and India but there are no reports from poorer countries, such as the Lao PDR (Laos), probably because people have neglected to look.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted a retrospective (2006-2012), and subsequent prospective study (2012-2013), at Mahosot Hospital, Vientiane, Laos, through liaison between the microbiology laboratory and the wards. Patients aged >1 yea

BACKGROUND: Bovine brucellosis is an important disease affecting cattle characterised by abortion, still birth, reduced milk production, weak foetus and infertility in both males and females. There is wide distribution of the disease among cattle and several wildlife species. Bovine brucellosis is commonly caused by B. abortus and very occasionally B. melitensis and B. suis. The distribution of bovine brucellosis in cattle has not been described in Malaysia. In this paper we describe the distribution, pattern and trend of bovine brucellosis in Peninsular Malaysia between 2000 and 2008 based on

Brucellosis is a widespread zoonotic disease of veterinary and public health importance with considerably higher prevalence in developing/underdeveloped countries. This study reports the prevalence and risk determinants of brucellosis in small ruminants of peri-urban and rural areas of district Multan, Southern Punjab, Pakistan. For this purpose, sera samples (n = 392) of small ruminants were collected and subjected to preliminary screening using commercially available RBPT reagents followed by serodetection of brucellosis using multispecies i-ELISA kit (ID.vet, France). All the ELISA positive
