Laboratory and clinical studies were performed on SY5555, the first penem oral antibiotic developed in Japan, in the pediatric field. The following results were obtained. 1. Antibacterial activities of the drug against 42 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae clinically isolated in 1993 were compared to those of 13 other drugs mainly composed of beta-lactam preparations. In vitro susceptibilities of 1478 strains of various pathogens isolated from clinical materials in 1981 to 23 antibiotics were studied using Showa disk diffusion test. Prevalence of bacterial resistance to antibiotics was evaluated. New cephem antibiotics such as cefmetazole (CMZ), cefoxitin (CFX) and cefotiam (CTM) had no increased activity over old cephalosporins such as cephalothin (CET) and cefazolin (CEZ) against Gram-positive cocci. Treatment of orthopedic device-related infection (ORDI) generally requires a combination of medical and surgical interventions for successful treatment outcomes. Many cases are treated with a two-stage revision, whereby contaminated implants and necrotic tissues are removed, and dead space is managed with a temporary, non-resorbable polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) spacer loaded with antibiotics. BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common infection requiring empiric antibiotic treatment. Due to the increased antibiotic resistance of uropathogens and their regional variation, monitoring pathogen distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility is important to ensure effective antibiotic therapy. This retrospective study analyzed the 3-year-long uropathogen profiles and their resistance from a single tertiary general hospital (single-center) and 28 hospitals (multi-center) to provide data allowing guidance for appropriate empiric antimicrobial treatment for UTI.

Preoperative preparation for cesarean delivery is a multistep approach for which protocols should exist at each hospital system. These protocols should be guided by the findings of this review. The interventions reviewed and recommendations made for this review have a common goal of decreasing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality related to cesarean delivery. PURPOSE: Tunneled catheters are widely used for intermediate to long-term hemodialysis (HD) access, but are prone to several complications that can require catheter replacement. Replacing malfunctioning catheters with a new line, placed in a different access site, can lead to problems with multiple vein occlusions. This has led many nephrologists to continue using the same vein as long as possible by guidewire catheter exchanges, to preserve other veins for future use. Clinical effects were investigated on cefadroxil powder for syrup (containing 100 mg of cefadroxil per 1 g) for acute bacterial infections (mostly scarlet fever) in the field of pediatrics, and the results were obtained as follows.
