Characterization of clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae from 19 laboratories using the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards extended-spectrum beta-lactamase detection methods.

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) are enzymes found in gram-negative bacilli that mediate resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins and aztreonam. In 1999, the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) published methods for screening and confirming the presence of ESBLs in Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella oxytoca, and Escherichia coli. To evaluate the confirmation protocol, we tested 139 isolates of K. pneumoniae that were sent to Project ICARE (Intensive Care Antimicrobial Resistance Epidemiology) from 19 hospitals in 11 U.S. states. Each isolate met the NCCLS

Ongoing diphtheria outbreak in Yemen: a cross-sectional and genomic epidemiology study.

BACKGROUND: An outbreak of diphtheria, declared in Yemen in October, 2017, is ongoing. We did a cross-sectional study to investigate the epidemiological, clinical, and microbiological features of the outbreak. METHODS: Probable cases of diphtheria that were defined clinically and recorded through a weekly electronic diseases early warning system (from 2017, week 22, to 2020, week 17) were used to identify trends of the outbreak (we divided the epidemic into three time periods: May 29, 2017, to June 10, 2018; June 11, 2018, to June 3, 2019; and June 4, 2019, to April 26, 2020). [Comparison of the modified Hodge test and the Carba NP test for detection of carbapenemases in Enterobacteriaceae isolates].

A rapid, practical, and accurate identification of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae isolates is crucial for the implementation of appropriate infection control measures and proper treatment of the infections. For this purpose, a large number of phenotypic test methods have been developed, although none has 100% sensitivity and specificity. Variations in sensitivity and specificity of these tests based on the type of beta-lactamase enzymes carried by that isolates might result in differences between regions and countries. The aim of this study was to compare the performances of widely

A Snapshot of Antimicrobial Resistance in Semi-Wild Oryx: Baseline Data from Qatar.

Background/Objectives: The spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health concern. Wild animals can play an important role in the amplification and dissemination of AMR and in conservation efforts aiming at controlling diseases in vulnerable wild animal populations. These animals can serve as reservoirs for antibiotic resistance genes and are key in the spread of AMR across ecosystems and hosts. Therefore, monitoring AMR in wild animals is crucial in tackling the spread of resistance in the environment and human population. This study investigated the phenotypic and genoty

Tetracycline and chloramphenicol exposure induce decreased susceptibility to tigecycline and genetic alterations in AcrAB-TolC efflux pump regulators in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Tigecycline (Tgc), a third-generation tetracycline is found as the last line of defense against multi-drug resistant bacteria. Recent increased rate of resistance to tgc, a human-restricted agent among animal bacteria poses a significant global health challenge. Overuse of first generation tetracyclines (Tet) and phenicols in animals have been suggested to be associated with Tgc resistance development. In the current study we aimed to determine the effect of tetracycline (Tet) and chloramphenicol (Chl) overexposure on Tgc susceptibility. A Tet and Chl-susceptible isolate of K. pneumoniae and E

The colonization rate and associated factors of vancomycin-resistant enterococci among HIV infected individuals in resource-limited settings of Southwest Ethiopia: a comparative cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) constitute a major global public health concern. These organisms can colonize the gastrointestinal (GI) tract for prolonged periods, ranging from months to years, and efforts to eradicate colonization are often only temporarily effective, with recurrence occurring within days or weeks. In immunocompromised individuals, particularly people living with HIV, VRE colonization may progress to clinically significant infection. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of VRE colonization and identify associated risk factors among HIV

Multiple antibiotic resistance indexing and molecular identification of Escherichia coli isolated from clinical and nonclinical sources in Port Harcourt Metropolis, Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: the emergence of antibiotic resistance in E. coli strains has led to a variety of clinical illnesses in both humans and animals, with consequences for human health and the environment. METHODS: this cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the risk of increased antibiotic resistance by calculating the multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index of E. coli in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. A higher MAR index close to 1 was interpreted as having a higher level of antibiotic resistance, while a lower MAR index close to 0 is an indicative of little to no resistance. In
