Neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Schizophrenia, anxiety, Parkinson's disease, and migraine are serious conditions that continue to threaten mankind. The cases of brainrelated disorders are increasing worldwide and are closely related to physiological, genetic, and environmental factors. Direct drug delivery to the brain is crucial for the effective treatment and prevention of these conditions. However, due to the presence of a lipophilic barrier, i.e., the bloodbrain barrier, the entry of therapeutic agents into the brain is restricted, resulting in a lower concentration at t

Neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and Multiple Sclerosis (MS), represent a substantial and growing global health burden, collectively accounting for millions of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) worldwide and severely impacting cognition, mood, behavior, and motor function. Current therapies, particularly small-molecule drugs, are challenged by the blood-brain barrier (BBB), resulting in poor central nervous system (CNS) bioavailability, systemic adverse effects, and suboptimal patient adherence, underscoring the urgent need for nov

Lung diseases induce changes in brain structure and function, leading to a range of cognitive, emotional, and motor deficits. The concept of the lung-brain axis has been proposed through neuroanatomy, endocrine, and immune pathway, while a considerable number of studies also explored the existence of the lung-brain axis from a neuroimaging perspective. This survey summarizes studies exploring the relationship between lung disease and brain structure and function from neuroimaging perspective, particular in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We have collated existing lung diseases studies and ca

The Fibroblast growth factor (FGFs) family consists of at least 22 members that exert their function by binding and activating fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs). The Fgf8/FgfD subfamily member, Fgf17, is located on human chromosome 8p21.3 and mouse chromosome 14 D2. In humans, FGF17 can be alternatively spliced to produce two isoforms (FGF17a and b) whereas three isoforms are present in mice (Fgf17a, b, and c), however, only Fgf17a and Fgf17b produce functional proteins. Fgf17 is a secreted protein with a cleavable N-terminal signal peptide and contains two binding domains, namely a c

Herpesviral encephalitis caused by Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) is one of the most devastating diseases in humans. Patients present with fever, mental status changes or seizures and when untreated, sequelae can be fatal. Herpes Simplex Encephalitis (HSE) is characterized by mainly unilateral necrotizing inflammation effacing the frontal and mesiotemporal lobes with rare involvement of the brainstem. HSV-1 is hypothesized to invade the CNS via the trigeminal or olfactory nerve, but viral tropism and the exact route of infection remain unclear. Several mouse models for HSE have been developed,

OBJECT: Although cerebral aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage is a devastating disease for humans, effective medical treatments have not yet been established. Recent reports have shown that regression of some inflammatory-related mediators has protective effects in experimental cerebral aneurysm models. This study corroborated the effectiveness of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) inhibitor for experimentally induced cerebral aneurysms in rats.
METHODS: Five-week-old male rats were prepared for induction of cerebral aneurysms and divided into 3 groups, 2 groups administered different concentrati

Based on an edge-centric functional network model, this study investigated the longitudinal evolution of overlapping network structures after mild traumatic brain injury and explored their potential molecular basis through transcriptomic analysis. Sixty-four acute-phase patients with mild traumatic brain injury and thirty-two healthy controls were recruited, and thirty-one patients completed the chronic-phase follow-up. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data and neuropsychological assessments were acquired, and correlations between imaging measures and neuropsychological scor

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a global source of injury-related death and disability, and survivors often suffer functional and psychiatric consequences that persist for years. Neuroinflammation, mediated in part by microglia, perpetuates chronic dysfunction after TBI and leaves survivors vulnerable to the effects of secondary immune challenges. Previous data from our lab shows that 30 days of mechanical sleep fragmentation (SF) aggravates microglia- associated neuroinflammation in C57BL/6 mice, impairing recovery after TBI.
METHODS: To better understand the mechanisms through

INTRODUCTION: SARS-CoV-2 infection can affect any organ, including both the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). The aim of this study was to explore the outcome and risk factors associated with the involvement of either CNS or PNS in a cohort of hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective observational cohort study of hospitalized adult patients with COVID-19, between May 2020 and December 2022, presenting with new onset neurological disabilities any time after admission.
RESULTS: We included 115 patients, 72 with CNS manifestations and

BACKGROUND: Coevolution between pathogens and their hosts decreases host morbidity and mortality. Bats host and can tolerate viruses which can be lethal to other vertebrate orders, including humans. Bat adaptations to infection include localized immune response, early pathogen sensing, high interferon expression without pathogen stimulation, and regulated inflammatory response. The immune reaction is costly, and bats suppress high-cost metabolism during torpor. In the temperate zone, bats hibernate in winter, utilizing a specific behavioural adaptation to survive detrimental environmental cond

BACKGROUND: Air pollution, especially fine particulate matter (PM), can cause brain damage, cognitive decline, and an increased risk of neurodegenerative disease, especially alzheimer's disease (AD). Typical pathological findings of amyloid and tau protein accumulation have been detected in the brain after exposure in animal studies. However, these observations were based on high levels of PM exposure, which were far from the WHO guidelines and those present in our environment. In addition, white matter involvement by air pollution has been less reported. Thus, this experiment was designed to

Despite much debate over a presumptively somatic vs psychological etiology of nonatopic food and chemical sensitivities, little systematic research has addressed the issues. The present study investigated self-reported illness from several common foods (wheat, dairy, eggs) and chemicals (pesticide, car exhaust, paint, perfume, new carpet), symptom patterns, and psychological profiles of a sample of young adult college students (n = 490, age 19.4 +/- 2.4, 52% female/48% male). Subjects were divided into 4 groups on the basis of sample medians for frequency of illness from the foods (FI) and che

BACKGROUND: Continuous circulation and drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are essential for the elimination of CSF-borne metabolic products and neuronal function. While multiple CSF drainage pathways have been identified, the significance of each to normal drainage and whether there are differential changes at CSF outflow regions in the aging brain are unclear.
METHODS: Dynamic in vivo imaging of near infrared fluorescently-labeled albumin was used to simultaneously visualize the flow of CSF at outflow regions on the dorsal side (transcranial and -spinal) of the central nervous system. Thi

BACKGROUND: Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is the leading cause of viral encephalitis in Asia. JEV infection of mice and humans can lead to an uncontrolled inflammatory response in the central nervous system (CNS), resulting in a detrimental outcome. Pigs act as important amplification and reservoir hosts, and JEV infection of pigs is mostly subclinical. Information on virus spread in the CNS and immune responses controlling JEV infection in the CNS of pigs, however remains scarce.
METHODS: Nine-week-old pigs were inoculated intranasal or intradermal with a relevant dose of 105 TCID50 of J

Congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (CHH) and Kallmann syndrome (KS) are a group of rare disorders responsible for complete or partial pubertal failure due to lack or insufficient secretion of the pituitary gonadotropins LH and FSH. The underlying neuroendocrine abnormalities are classically divided into two main groups: molecular defects of the gonadotrope cascade leading to isolated normosmic CHH (nCHH), and developmental abnormalities affecting the hypothalamic location of GnRH neurons, but also olfactory bulbs and tracts morphogenesis and responsible for KS. Identification of genetic

An antibody to cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase, purified from rat liver, has been used for the immunohistochemical localization of cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase-like immunoreactivity in the rat central nervous system. The distribution of this immunoreactivity has been confirmed using in situ hybridization with specific cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase antisense DNA probes. Cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase immunoreactivity was detected in neurons and was found in some glial populations. Immunoreactivity and in situ messenger RNA signals were present in many forebrain areas including the olfactory b
