The DSM-IV rates of child and adolescent disorders in Puerto Rico: prevalence, correlates, service use, and the effects of impairment.

BACKGROUND: Few prevalence studies in which DSM-IV criteria were used in children in representative community samples have been reported. We present prevalence data for the child and adolescent population of Puerto Rico and examine the relation of DSM-IV diagnoses to global impairment, demographic correlates, and service use in an island-wide representative sample. METHODS: We sampled 1886 child-caretaker dyads in Puerto Rico by using a multistage sampling design. Children were aged 4 to 17 years. Response rate was 90.1%. Face-to-face interviews of children and their primary caretakers were p

Diagnostic specificity and nonspecificity in the dimensions of preschool psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: The appropriateness of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) nosology for classifying preschool mental health disturbances continues to be debated. To inform this debate, we investigate whether preschool psychopathology shows differentiation along diagnostically specific lines when DSM-IV symptoms are aggregated statistically. METHODS: One thousand seventy-three parents of preschoolers aged 2-5 years attending a large pediatric clinic completed the Child Behavior Checklist 1.5-5. A stratified probability sample of 193 parents of high s

From theory to practice: Revealing the real-world impact of cognitive behavioral therapy in psychological disorders through a dynamic bibliometric and survey study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a proven treatment for many psychological disorders. It has been extensively studied and is effective for anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. However, a bibliometric analysis of the CBT literature for these disorders is needed. This study reviewed this field's research and identifies key trends, influential studies, and gaps. METHODS: Using MeSH-generated keywords and PRISMA guidelines, the Scopus database retrieved bibliographic data without temporal or geographical constraints. Data-driven studies were analyzed for performance, collaborati

Behavioral Improvements following Lesion Resection for Pediatric Epilepsy: Pediatric Psychosurgery?

INTRODUCTION: Resection of brain lesions associated with refractory epilepsy to achieve seizure control is well accepted. However, concurrent behavioral effects of these lesions such as changes in mood, personality, and cognition and the effects of surgery on behavior have not been well characterized. We describe 5 such children with epileptogenic lesions and significant behavioral abnormalities which improved after surgery. CASE DESCRIPTIONS: Five children (ages 3-14 years) with major behavioral abnormalities and lesional epilepsy were identified and treated at our center. Behavioral problem

The Post-intervention Impact of Amaka Amasanyufu on Behavioral and Mental Health Functioning of Children and Adolescents in Low-Resource Communities in Uganda: Analysis of a Cluster-Randomized Trial From the SMART Africa-Uganda Study (2016-2022).

PURPOSE: Disruptive behavioral disorders (DBDs) are common among children/adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa. A 16-week manualized multiple family group (MFG) intervention called Amaka Amasanyufu designed to reduce DBDs among school-going children/adolescents in low-resource communities in Uganda was efficacious in reducing symptoms of poor mental health relative to usual care in the short-term (4 months post-intervention-initiation). We examined whether intervention effects are sustained 6 months postintervention. METHODS: We used longitudinal data from 636 children positive for DBDs: (1) Con

Warmth and reciprocity with mothers, and young children's resilience to exposure to community violence in Colombia: findings from the La Sabana Parent-Child Study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to community violence is common worldwide and is associated with emotional and behavioural problems in children. Little is known about sources of resilience. Building on our previous work on the contribution of callous-unemotional (CU) traits to child aggression in Colombia, we examined whether positive parenting is protective for children whose families are exposed to community violence. METHODS: Families were recruited from three demographically contrasting regions of Colombia. The sample comprised 235 children aged 3.5 years and their mothers, of whom 220 (93%) were fo

[Quality of life for adolescents with vocal cord dysfunction].

BACKGROUND: Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) is a functional breathing disorder. A psychosomatic aetiology has been discussed and associations with depression, anxiety disorders, and social stress have been reported. We have undertaken a screening of behavioural and emotional problems in adolescent patients using standardised questionnaires. METHODS: Thirty-one patients (8 - 16 years) with the clinical suspicion of VCD were investigated using the Youth-Self-Report (YSR/11 - 18) and for the assessment of the parents we used the analoguous Child-Behaviour-Checklist (CBCL/6 - 18). Clinical and molecular genetics of ADHD and Tourette syndrome. Two related polygenic disorders.

ADHD is a polygenic disorder due to the additive effect of genes affecting dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, GABA, and other neurotransmitters. Some of the specific loci involved are dopamine genes--DRD2, DRD4, DRD5, and the dopamine transporter; norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (EPI) genes--dopamine beta-hydroxylase, ADRA2A, ADRA2C, PNMT, norepinephrine transporter, MAOA, COMT; serotonin genes--TDO2, HTR1A, HTR1DA, serotonin transporter; GABA genes--GABRB3; androgen receptor and other genes. This model is consistent with all of the present knowledge about ADHD including (a) the increase

Pharmacoresistant Severe Mental Health Disorders in Children and Adolescents: Functional Abnormalities of Cytochrome P450 2D6.

BACKGROUND: Severe mental health disorders in children and adolescents represent a major public health problem. Despite adequate drug treatment, some patients develop pharmacoresistant disease. As a consequence, physicians are confronted with prescribing challenges, prolonged hospitalization and increased risk of adverse events, thus aggravating short-, medium-, and long-term prognosis. The majority of psychotropic treatments, particularly antipsychotics and antidepressants, are metabolized at hepatic level by cytochrome P450 (CYP), particularly by CYP3A4 and CYP2D6. Several CYP2D6 genetic pol

Parental Stress and Coping in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Network Analysis of Internalizing and Externalizing Symptoms in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Parental stress and coping strategies play a pivotal role in shaping mental health outcomes for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). While traditional research has examined linear relationships, network analysis offers a novel lens to uncover dynamic interactions between parental factors and child psychopathology. This study employs advanced network modeling to map how specific stress dimensions and coping mechanisms differentially associate with internalizing (e.g., anxiety) and externalizing (e.g., aggression) symptoms. Our findings provide clinically actionable insigh

Prevalence and comorbidity of borderline personality traits in the Quebec general population aged 12-14 years.

PURPOSE: The early identification of borderline personality traits (BPT) in adolescents helps to prevent their progression. Data are available for the clinical population, but little has been published on the general population, especially regarding age and sex distribution in adolescence. Even less is known about the comorbidity of BPT with other mental disorders. METHODS: We estimated the prevalence of BPT, by sex, age, and comorbidity, in a sample of adolescents aged 12-14 years (n = 799) from the Quebec Mental Health Survey. A complex sampling design was used to ensure representativeness.

Diagnostic efficiency and psychometric properties of CBCL DSM-oriented scales in a large sample of Chinese school-attending students aged 5-16.

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents are vulnerable to various psychiatric disorders during the critical phase of individual development. In China, the child behavior checklist (CBCL) is a widely employed psychometric questionnaire for assessing children and adolescents. However, further validation of the psychometric properties and diagnostic effectiveness of the CBCL DSM-oriented scales is necessary. These scales were developed based on DSM diagnosis and require evaluation using a substantial sample of Chinese individuals. METHODS: This study involved the analysis of a substantial dataset c

Relative age within the school year and diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: a nationwide population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Findings are mixed on the relationship between attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and younger relative age in the school year. We aimed to investigate whether relative age is associated with ADHD diagnosis in a country where prescribing rates are low and whether any such association has changed over time or relates to comorbid disorders (eg, conduct disorder [CD], oppositional defiant disorder [ODD], or learning disorder [LD]). METHODS: We used nationwide population-based registers to identify all Finnish children born between Jan 1, 1991, and Dec 31, 2004, who were d

Needs of parents and carers of children and young people with mental health difficulties: protocol for a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Having a child or young person (CYP) with mental health problems can be highly distressing for parents/carers. The impact can include parental/carer depression, anxiety, lost productivity and poor family relationships. Currently, there is no synthesis of this evidence, which is needed to provide clarity around what support parents/carers may need, to meet the needs of family mental health. This review aims to identify the needs of the parents/carers of CYP who are receiving mental health services. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A systematic review will be conducted to identify potentiall

The impact of child psychiatric conditions on future educational outcomes among a community cohort in Brazil.

AIMS: Mental health problems early in life can negatively impact educational attainment, which in turn have negative long-term effects on health, social and economic opportunities. Our aims were to: (i) estimate the impacts of different types of psychiatric conditions on educational outcomes and (ii) to estimate the proportion of adverse educational outcomes which can be attributed to psychiatric conditions. METHODS: Participants (N = 2511) were from a school-based community cohort of Brazilian children and adolescents aged 6-14 years enriched for high family risk of psychiatric conditions. W

Less imitation of arbitrary actions is a specific developmental precursor to callous-unemotional traits in early childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Callous-unemotional (CU) traits in early childhood explain heterogeneity within conduct problems and are associated with higher risk for later diagnoses of childhood disruptive behavior disorders and antisocial behavior in adulthood. Emerging research implicates impairments in affiliative processes in the etiology of CU traits. The current study tests whether the imitation of intentional actions with no functional significance -a behavior that supports the acquisition of social conventions and affiliative bonds, is a specific developmental precursor to CU traits in early childhood.
