Masculinity and misinformation: Social dynamics of liver fluke infection risk in Thailand.

Liver fluke infection through the consumption of raw or undercooked freshwater fish is a major public health problem in the Mekong Region. Despite the extensive efforts of liver fluke health campaigns, Northeast Thailand still reports high human infection prevalence as consumption of raw fish dishes has diminished but not ceased. This study examines the roles of social-cultural factors, particularly the influences of masculinity and misinformation, on liver fluke infection risk. Participant observation, questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews were conducted in four villages in Kal

Behavioral indicators to detect ovarian phase in the dromedary she-camel.

This pilot study was conducted to test the hypothesis that female camels behave differently in various ovarian phases in the presence of a restrained male camel. The aim was to identify behavioral patterns which could be used as indicators to detect ovulatory phase by visual observation in the presence of a restrained virile bull. Twenty-four healthy, nonpregnant, and nonlactating adult females were used. Transrectal ultrasonography was performed for each animal once a week over a 3-week period to determine the phase of the ovarian cycle. Females were considered to be in the ovulatory phase (O

Non-classic 21-hydroxylase deficiency in an 18-year-old female athlete. A case report.

Background: In non-classic 21-hydroxylase deficiency, age at presentation and genital findings are variable. Late diagnosis with dramatic signs of virilization precludes early treatment and thus prevention of anatomic and psychosocial consequences. The following case illustrates the complexity of late diagnosis.Case: An 18-year-old West Indian female was seen for evaluation of clitoromegaly and hirsutism discovered in the emergency department when she presented after sexual assault. She had allegedly been drugged and raped in her dorm room. She was a college student with an athletic scholarshi

Male pseudohermaphroditism due to 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 3 deficiency. Diagnosis, psychological evaluation, and management.

Ten male pseudohermaphrodites with 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 3 (17 beta-HSD3) deficiency were evaluated in 1 clinic with an average follow-up of 10.1 years. The diagnoses were made by demonstrating low to normal serum testosterone levels, high androstenedione levels, and high ratios of serum androstenedione to testosterone in the basal state or after treatment with human chorionic gonadotropin. The molecular features of the underlying mutations were identified in all 7 families. Two additional males in the same families are believed to be affected on the basis of history obtained fr

Prenatal diagnosis of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (21-hydroxylase deficiency) in Croatia.

We report on the prenatal diagnosis of congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 21-hydroxylase in 20 at-risk pregnancies (16 salt-wasting and 4 simple virilizing families). We have diagnosed 3 affected fetuses (2 males and 1 female), 3 healthy homozygotes (2 males and 1 female), and 14 healthy heterozygotes (7 females and 7 males). These data were collected over 4 years. In 16 fetuses, the diagnosis was made with measurements of 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) and delta-4-androstenedione (delta) in amniotic fluid (AF), human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing of amniotic cells, as well as karyotypes

[Iatrogenic demineralizing osteopathies].

Long-term corticosteroid therapy is the most frequent and most severe cause of iatrogenic osteoporosis. Hypocalcaemia, subsequent to the induced negative calcium balance, may lead to secondary hyperparathyroidism. Corticosteroids also affect bone itself, probably by disrupting the production of growth factors. Bone resorption increases and bone formation decreases leading to a reduction in total bone mass. The relative immobilization resulting from the corticoid-induced myopathy or the underlying disease may accelerate the process. On the average, after one year of treatment, 5% of the bone ma

LH receptor in testosterone-producing ovarian tumor. In vivo and in vitro HCG-stimulated testosterone production.

The aim of the present work is to report in vivo and in vitro hormonal studies performed on a 71 year old virilized woman due to a Leydig cell tumor of the ovary. Testosterone (T), Cortisol, DHEA(s) and ACTH concentrations were determined in blood samples taken every 4 h throughout 24 h previous to surgery. T average concentration from the 6 samples was 3.3 ng/ml (range: 2.5-4.2 ng/ml). DHEA(s) was normal; Cortisol and ACTH levels were normal and their circadian rhythms were present. T value obtained during Dexamethasone administration (2 mg daily/3 days) was 2.4 ng/ml. This value was signific

Long term effects of aromatase inhibitor treatment in patients with aromatase excess syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Aromatase excess syndrome (AEXS) is a rare, autosomal dominant disorder, characterized by enhanced aromatization of androgens and estrogen excess. In males it is characterized by pre-/peripubertal gynecomastia, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, advanced bone age and short adult height. Only a few female patients have been described so far. METHODS: We report on a family with four members with AEXS and present the long-term effects of aromatase inhibitor use in three of them. Genetic analysis showed a monoallelic 0.3-Mb deletion in 15q21, involving parts of CYP19A1, GLDN and DMXL2 i

Adrenocortical carcinoma: Pediatric aspects (Review).

Adrenocortical carcinoma (adrenal cortex-derived cancer), an orphan malignancy, is a very aggressive disease that affects both adults and children with an annual incidence of 1-2 adult and 0.2-0.38 pediatric cases/million (in the pediatric population it represents 0.2% of all cancers), with a female predominance. A total of 80-90% of cases have hormonal imbalances such as Cushing syndrome, virilization, and puberty anomalies. Precocious puberty (PP) of iso- or hetero-sexual pattern is independent of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) (high testosterone/estrogens and low FSH/LH) but post-ope

Clinical Significance of Shortened Penile Length and Alterations in Penile Length Following Treatment for Peyronie's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Across many cultures, penis size has been associated with virility, and concerns about penile length are commonplace. Peyronie's disease (PD) is a known acquired cause of penile shortening. OBJECTIVES: This paper describes the psychosocial impacts of penile length on men and their partners, both generally and in men with PD, and evaluates the effect of PD treatments (eg, collagenase clostridium histolyticum , surgery, mechanical therapy) on this outcome measure. METHODS: A PubMed database search was performed for English language articles through July 2021. Main outcome measure

[Endocrine disruptors and hypospadias in Gran Canaria island (2012-2015)].

OBJECTIVE: Hypospadias represents the most frequent male congenital malformation in children, with a prevalence of 1 in 200-300 new born or 4-6 in 1000 male new born. Genetic and environmental factors play a strong role on developing this virilization defect acting as endocrinal disruptors (ED). The objective of the present study was to evaluate the environmental factors that may have influenced the development oh hypospadias in children treated at the Maternal and Child University Hospital od Las Palmas of Gran Canaria Island during the years 2012-2015. METHODS: The present study represents

Reversal of idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, which may be associated with anosmia (the Kallmann syndrome) or with a normal sense of smell, is a treatable form of male infertility caused by a congenital defect in the secretion or action of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Patients have absent or incomplete sexual maturation by the age of 18. Idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism was previously thought to require lifelong therapy. We describe 15 men in whom reversal of idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism was sustained after discontinuation of hormonal therapy. METHODS: We

NIH conference. Future directions in the study and management of congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia describes a group of inherited autosomal recessive disorders characterized by an enzymatic defect in cortisol biosynthesis, compensatory increases in corticotropin secretion, and adrenocortical hyperplasia. 21-Hydroxylase deficiency is responsible for more than 95% of cases and is one of the most common known autosomal recessive disorders. The classic or severe type presents in the newborn period or early childhood with virilization and adrenal insufficiency, with or without salt loss; the mild or nonclassic form presents in late childhood or early adulthood with

Ontogeny and reversal of brain circuit abnormalities in a preclinical model of PCOS.

Androgen excess is a hallmark of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a prevalent yet poorly understood endocrine disorder. Evidence from women and preclinical animal models suggests that elevated perinatal androgens can elicit PCOS onset in adulthood, implying androgen actions in both PCOS ontogeny and adult pathophysiology. Prenatally androgenized (PNA) mice exhibit a robust increase of progesterone-sensitive GABAergic inputs to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons implicated in the pathogenesis of PCOS. It is unclear when altered GABAergic wiring develops in the brain, and whether the

Screening for mutations in 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and androgen receptor in women presenting with partially virilised 46,XY disorders of sex development.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: The precise diagnosis of partially virilised women with 46,XY disorders of sex development (DSD) is often obscure. In practice, this group often comes under the poorly defined, clinically based label of partial androgen insensitivity syndrome (PAIS). In a previous study, we found that 5α-reductase 2 (SRD5A2) mutations occurred in 43% of women in this subgroup. We expand this work to include biochemical and genetic screening for 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD17B3) and androgen receptor (AR) mutations. METHODS: Analysis of serum androgens (androstenedione and testo
