The association of oral status with systemic health, quality of life, and economic productivity.

It is well established that many systemic adverse health conditions have manifestations in the oral cavity. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the available scientific evidence that describes the opposite effect, how adverse oral health conditions affect three aspects of daily living: 1) systemic health, 2) quality of life, and 3) economic productivity. Examples of oral health affecting systemic health include rheumatic fever patients who develop infective endocarditis from oral bacteria and organ transplant patients who develop severe complications from oral infections. Both systemic h

Injuries in youth football and the relationship to player maturation: An analysis of time-loss injuries during four seasons in an English elite male football academy.

A better insight into injuries in elite-youth football may inform prevention strategies. The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to investigate the frequency, incidence, and pattern of time-loss injuries in an elite male football academy, exploring injuries in relation to age and maturation status. Across four consecutive playing seasons, playing exposure and injuries to all academy players (U'9 to U'21) were recorded by club medical staff. Maturation status at the time of injury was also calculated for players competing in U'13 to U'16 aged squads. Time-loss injury occurrence and mat

Procedure for prolapse and hemorrhoids (PPH) with low rectal anastomosis using a PPH 03 stapler: low rate of recurrence and postoperative complications.

PURPOSE: The procedure for prolapse and hemorrhoids (PPH) has the advantage of less postoperative pain. However, serious postoperative complications have been reported after PPH, and the postoperative recurrence rate is high in comparison with conventional Milligan-Morgan hemorrhoidectomy (MMH). The purpose of this study was to evaluate PPH with low rectal anastomosis (PPH-LA) in comparison with the original PPH and MMH. METHODS: Among a total of 1315 patients with hemorrhoids, MMH was conducted in 322, original PPH using a PPH 01 stapler (PPH01) in 63, PPH-LA using 01 (PPH-LA01) in 236, 03 (

Importance of participation in major life areas matters for return to work.

INTRODUCTION: The complexity of the process and outcome of vocational rehabilitation yearns for a multifaceted approach. This article investigates whether importance of participation in major life areas for men and women predicts the outcome of vocational rehabilitation. METHODS: This longitudinal study provides measure points at the start of the intervention (T1), at the end of the intervention (T2) and at a follow-up 6-12 months after completing the rehabilitation program (T3). Associations were assessed by nominal logistic regression. RESULTS: The importance of participation in work was p

Participatory ergonomic intervention versus strength training on chronic pain and work disability in slaughterhouse workers: study protocol for a single-blind, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in the shoulder, arm and hand is high among slaughterhouse workers, allegedly due to the highly repetitive and forceful exposure of these body regions during work. Work disability is a common consequence of these pains. Lowering the physical exposure through ergonomics intervention is the traditional strategy to reduce the workload. An alternative strategy could be to increase physical capacity of the worker through strength training. This study investigates the effect of two contrasting interventions, participatory ergonomics versus strength

The child with arthritis in the school setting.

Arthritis is a condition often associated with the elderly. However, arthritis affects approximately 275,000 children nationwide. Symptoms may vary from one swollen joint to multiply affected joints coupled with fatigue, fever, and rash. Its effect on the school-age child can range from missing a few days of school per year to hospitalizations requiring tutoring to keep up with missed schoolwork. Other issues include the social impact of medications and their side effects, noncompliance, frequent doctor's visits interfering with school and afterschool activities, and not being able to keep up

The economic impacts of using adalimumab (Humira® ) for reducing pain in people with ankylosing spondylitis: A microsimulation study for Australia.

AIM: The onset and progression of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) usually occurs during the life stage when individuals are more likely to be working and receiving an income, but little is known about the effects of interventions that reduce pain and improve the economic circumstances of patients out of the labour force due to AS. This study evaluates the economic benefits of pain reduction among people aged 19-64 with AS using adalimumab (Humira® ) from the patient and governmental perspectives. METHODS: We estimated the benefits of adalimumab for reducing pain in people aged 19-64 with AS in te

Psycho-Socio-Economic Issues Challenging Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis Patients: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Limited treatment options, long duration of treatment and associated toxicity adversely impact the physical and mental well-being of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients. Despite research advances in the microbiological and clinical aspects of MDR-TB, research on the psychosocial context of MDR-TB is limited and less understood. METHODOLOGY: We searched the databases of PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase and Google Scholar to retrieve all published articles. The final manuscripts included in the review were those with a primary focus on psychosocial issues of MDR-TB patients. T

Global economic burden of Chagas disease: a computational simulation model.

BACKGROUND: As Chagas disease continues to expand beyond tropical and subtropical zones, a growing need exists to better understand its resulting economic burden to help guide stakeholders such as policy makers, funders, and product developers. We developed a Markov simulation model to estimate the global and regional health and economic burden of Chagas disease from the societal perspective. METHODS: Our Markov model structure had a 1 year cycle length and consisted of five states: acute disease, indeterminate disease, cardiomyopathy with or without congestive heart failure, megaviscera, and

Occupational Functioning Scale (OFS)--an instrument for assessment of work ability in psychiatric disorders.

The aim was to present the content of the newly developed observer rating scale of work ability--The Occupational Functioning Scale (OFS)--and its basic psychometric properties. Psychiatric disorders cause functional impairment in several domains, including occupational functioning. The assessment of work-related functioning is often neglected in psychiatric research, partly due to a lack of reliable and valid instruments. The validity of OFS was evaluated by comparing it with other work ability measures (SAS-work, Work Ability Index, sickness absence) and to non-work-ability related measures

Gender-related differences in treatment outcomes for patients with musculoskeletal disorders.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Clinicians have long hypothesized that gender may be a risk factor in treatment outcomes of patients with chronic disability associated with musculoskeletal disorders. Although the scientific literature shows a higher prevalence of occupational low back injury in men, and a higher rate of repetitive motion and neck injuries in women, few studies have comprehensively investigated the role of gender regarding cost-related outcome variables of significance after work-related injuries. PURPOSE: This study was designed to examine the relationship between gender and biopsychosoc
