In the present study, we have investigated 37 invasive Staphylococcus aureus strains (collected between 1997 and 2005) from 33 human episodes of septicaemia causing either endocarditis or vertebral osteomyelitis. Our goal was to determine the characteristics and the mode of acquisition of healthcare-associated bacteraemia due to CTX-M-producing Escherichia coli in a 1,800-bed hospital.
