[A survey of the prevalence and causes of eye disorders in primary school children in Antananarivo].

To assess the prevalence and causes of ocular abnormalities in children, we performed a cross-sectional survey with cluster sampling in Madagascar in Antananarivo primary schools in October 1994. Our other aim was to sensitize the sanitary authorities and the students of ophthalmology to the notion of public health ophthalmology in a country where a national blindness prevention program is being established. 1,081 children aged from 8 to 14 years (mean age 10.6 years) were examined. 51, or 4.7%, were diagnosed as having ocular abnormalities. These abnormalities were distributed as follows: 22

Ocular findings in a patient with deletion short arm chromosome 5 (cri du chat) and ring chromosome 14.

The general and ocular signs in patients with deletion of the short arm of chromosome 5 (cri du chat) and ring chromosome 14 have been reported previously in the literature. Ophthalmic changes recorded in the latter anomaly are scanty. We describe a patient with the combined chromosomal anomaly--a deletion of part of the short arm of chromosome 5 and a ring chromosome 14 which hitherto has not been reported.

Comparison of Two Surgical Methods for the Treatment of Convergence Excess: Y-Split and Retro-equatorial Myopexy of the Medial Rectus Muscle.

BACKGROUND: In addition to the bimedial recession of the rectus muscle, two surgical procedures are available to reduce torque: retro-equatorial myopexy (Cüppers-Fadenoperation) and the Y-split of the medial rectus muscle. The aim of this study is to compare the safety and efficacy of the latter two surgical techniques. METHODS: Data from 113 consecutive patients who presented for surgical treatment of convergence excess at the University Hospital of Würzburg between October 2006 and October 2020 were retrospectively analysed. In 2006 - 2014. All patients underwent retro-equatorial myopexy, w

Clinical features and refractive profile of Brown syndrome.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Understanding the refractive profile, amblyopia prevalence, binocular status, and head position in patients with Brown syndrome help clinicians become more familiar with this syndrome. BACKGROUND: Brown syndrome is identified as an active and passive restricted elevation of the eye in adduction. There is little information on clinical features, including refractive status, amblyopia, abnormal head posture (AHP), and types of deviation in these patients. METHODS: This study retrospectively evaluated records of 100 Brown syndrome patients from 2015 to 2022 at Farabi Eye

Subjective behavioral measures in myopic and pre-myopic children before and after the COVID lockdown.

BACKGROUND: There are environmental factors that may contribute to the onset of myopia. This study aims to evaluate the children's lifestyle changes before and after the COVID-19 lockdown and how they can influence their vision. METHODS: The same questionnaire was administered to children aged between 5 and 7 in Spain every year in September before (2017-2019) and after the COVID-19 lockdown (2020-2021). All the children also passed a vision exam consisting of the measurement of visual acuity (VA) and determination of objective and subjective refraction. Children were classified as myopes, pr

Ocular Deformations in Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome and Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension.

PURPOSE: Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) shares several clinical features with idiopathic intracranial-hypertension (IIH), namely disc edema, globe-flattening, hyperopia, and choroidal folds. Globe-flattening is caused by increased intracranial pressure (ICP) in IIH, but the cause in SANS is uncertain. If increased ICP alone causes SANS, then the ocular deformations should be similar to IIH; if not, alternative mechanisms would be implicated. METHODS: Using optical coherence tomography (OCT) axial images of the optic nerve head, we compared "pre to post" ocular deformation

Posterior microphthalmia and nanophthalmia in Tunisia caused by a founder c.1059_1066insC mutation of the PRSS56 gene.

Congenital microphthalmia (CMIC) is a common developmental ocular disorder characterized by a small, and sometimes malformed, eye. Posterior microphthalmia (PM) and nanophthalmia are two rare subtypes of isolated CMIC characterized by extreme hyperopia due to short axial length and elevated lens/eye volume ratio. While nanophthalmia is associated with a reduced size in both anterior and posterior segments, PM involves a normal-size anterior chamber but a small posterior segment. Several genes encoding transcription and non-transcription regulators have been identified in different forms of CMI
