Measurement of humeroradial and humeroulnar transarticular joint forces in the canine elbow joint after humeral wedge and humeral slide osteotomies.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of humeral wedge and humeral slide osteotomies on force distribution between the articular surfaces of the humerus and the radius and ulna in normal canine thoracic limbs. STUDY DESIGN: In vitro mechanical testing. SAMPLE POPULATION: Cadaveric canine right thoracic limbs (n=12). METHODS: Transarticular elbow force maps were measured using a tactile array pressure sensor in elbow joints of axially aligned limbs under 200 N axial load before and after humeral wedge and humeral slide osteotomies. RESULTS: Loading induced 2 distinct areas of high forces that

Computed tomography versus arthroscopy for detection of canine elbow dysplasia lesions.

OBJECTIVE: To describe associations between computed tomography (CT) and arthroscopy in dogs with elbow dysplasia lesions. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Canine elbows (n=101) investigated by CT and arthroscopy. METHODS: CT scans were reviewed for 10 predetermined CT signs and graded for osteophyte size. Surgical reports were reviewed for specific disease features and cartilage erosion grades. Associations between variables were investigated with multivariate logistic regression and correlation between osteophyte size and cartilage erosion with Spearman's ran

Transiliac approach for exposure of lumbosacral intervertebral disk and foramen: technique description.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and evaluate a transiliac approach to the L7-S1 disk and intervertebral foramen in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Cadaver study. ANIMALS: Fresh canine cadavers (n=10). METHODS: A craniolateral approach was made to each iliac wing of 10 fresh canine mixed breed cadavers. An 18 mm hole was drilled in a standardized position through the iliac wing. The musculature connected to the cranial aspects of the sacral wing was dissected and retracted cranially through this iliac window. Endoscopic exploration of the area was performed. RESULTS: The foramen and intervertebral disk were cle

Immediate mandibular reconstruction of a 5 cm defect using rhBMP-2 after partial mandibulectomy in a dog.

OBJECTIVE: To report treatment of a complex odontoma of the mandible by partial mandibulectomy and immediate surgical reconstruction using bridging plate fixation with a synthetic graft. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical case report. ANIMALS: A 4-year-old male castrated cocker spaniel. METHODS: Immediate reconstruction of the left mandible (5 cm gap) was performed after complete excision of a complex odontoma.
