In preceding studies the neotropical ascomycete Hypoxylon rickii turned out to be a prolific source of new secondary metabolites, considering that we had obtained terpenoids with five different scaffolds along with a series of terphenyls. Phaeohyphomycosis is a term used to describe a heterogenous group of cutaneous and systemic mycotic infections caused by melanized fungi. Many fungi have been reported as pathogens of this disease. The disease spectrum ranges from superficial cutaneous infections, deep cutaneous infections, to systemic infections with internal organ involvement. Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic granulomatous disease caused frequently by fungi of the Fonsecaea genus. The objective of this study was the phenotypic and molecular identification of F. pedrosoi strains isolated from chromoblastomycosis patients in Mexico and Venezuela. Amplicons of SSU and ITS1+2 rDNA of 13 strains of Fonsecaea pedrosoi and three strains of F. compacta were digested with seven restriction enzymes. Rhinocladiella aquaspersa is an etiologic agent of chromoblastomycosis, a subcutaneous chronic infectious disease. We report on the first case of eumycetoma caused by the organism Leptosphaeria tompkinsii to be diagnosed and possibly acquired within the United Kingdom.
