BACKGROUND: The role of the domestic cat as definitive host for Echinococcus multilocularis and thus in environmental contamination with eggs has not yet been entirely resolved. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of E. multilocularis and other gastrointestinal parasites in Swiss domestic cats and to compare the diagnostic sensitivity of different methods for the detection of intestinal taeniid infection.
METHODS: Faecal samples from 146 cats were included in the study. Faecal samples only were available from 55 cats; for the other 91 cats, necropsy was performed in addition to faecal s

Evidence of disease and mortalities of young of the year (age-0) Smallmouth Bass Micropterus dolomieu has occurred during the late spring and summer in many parts of the Susquehanna River watershed since 2005. To better understand contributing factors, fish collected from multiple areas throughout the watershed as well as out-of-basin reference populations (Allegheny and Delaware River basins; experimental ponds, Kearneysville, West Virginia) were examined grossly and histologically for abnormalities. Tissue contaminant concentrations were determined from whole-body homogenates, and water cont

The life-threatening diseases alveolar and cystic echinococcoses are caused by larvae of the tapeworms Echinococcus multilocularis and E. granulosus, respectively. In both cases, intermediate hosts, such as humans, are infected by oral uptake of oncosphere larvae, followed by asexual multiplication and almost unrestricted growth of the metacestode within host organs. Besides surgery, echinococcosis treatment relies on benzimidazole-based chemotherapy, directed against parasite beta-tubulin. However, since beta-tubulins are highly similar between cestodes and humans, benzimidazoles can only be

Genes and transcripts which show homology to the host-protective 45W antigen of Taenia ovis have been cloned from the human parasite Taenia solium. The T. solium genes cloned in this study (TSO45) show conserved genomic structural features which are also features of the T. ovis 45W gene family. The TSO45 genes consist of a four exon and three intron structure. Eight TSO45 transcripts, encoded by at least five genes, were cloned from T. solium oncospheres and comparison of their DNA sequence indicates that some transcripts have arisen by alternative splicing, the first demonstration of exon inc

All researchers working at Department of Parasitology, Asahikawa Medical College (AMC) have been involved in either basic or applied research on echinococcosis (alveolar echinococcosis; AE, cystic echinococcosis; CE) and neurocysticercosis (NCC). As these parasitic diseases are 1) most serious helminthic infections threatening human life, 2) caused by the larval stage of very closely related taeniid cestodes and 3) recognized as global emerging parasitic diseases, we have to establish research reference center for differentiation of these diseases, since the recommendations for the treatment o

The apparent prevalence of endoparasitic infections of cats and dogs presented to the small animal Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania was measured between 1984 and 1991. Two thousand feline and 8077 canine fecal samples were examined along with 6830 canine blood samples. The overall mean monthly prevalence of feline infections was 16% for ascarids, 0.9% for hookworms, 4.0% for tapeworms, 2.4% for Giardia spp. and 4.2% for coccidia. The overall mean monthly prevalence of canine infections was 5.7% for ascarids, 9.7% for hookworms, 9.7% for whipworms. 1.8% for tapeworms, 4.7%

An investigation into gastrointestinal helminthiasis in human and dog population of the Kainji Lake area revealed a high prevalence of helminthiasis which may be due to lack of adequate health and veterinary facilities; crowdiness and squalid environment. The prevalent parasites in humans were Ancylostoma sp, 40.33%; Ascaris lumbricoides, 44.07% and Strongyloides stercoralis 4.05%, while in dogs Ancylostoma sp, 36.95%, Dipylidium caninum, 28.26%, Echinococcus granulosus, 8.69% and S. stercoralis 5.43%. The risk of incidental occurrence of helminths of dog, D. caninum, Toxocara canis, E. granul

BACKGROUND: Cestodes are a diverse group of parasites, some of them being agents of neglected diseases. In cestodes, little is known about the functional properties of G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) which have proved to be highly druggable targets in other organisms. Notably, serotoninergic G-protein coupled receptors (5-HT GPCRs) play major roles in key functions like movement, development and reproduction in parasites.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Three 5-HT GPCRs from Echinococcus granulosus and Mesocestoides corti were cloned, sequenced, bioinformatically analyzed and functionally

We investigated the prevalence of equine tapeworms, Anoplocephala spp., in Danish horses during a seven-year period assessed by coprological analysis. The data material included >11,000 observations distributed over the period 2009-2015, and four major geographic regions in Denmark representing sandy soils and clayey moraine soils, respectively. This allowed us to test for possible differences between regions (or soil types) and seasons. For a sub-set of the data (about 1200 observations) age of horses was also known, and it was shown that prevalence was highest in the age group 1-5years and t

This study presents the first comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of the interrelationships of the morphologically diverse elasmobranch-hosted tapeworm order Lecanicephalidea, based on molecular sequence data. With almost half of current generic diversity having been erected or resurrected within the last decade, an apparent conflict between scolex morphology and proglottid anatomy has hampered the assignment of many of these genera to families. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of two nuclear markers (D1-D3 of lsrDNA and complete ssrDNA) and two mitochondrial markers (partial rrnL and

An eight-year-old, neutered, female Shetland Sheepdog presented with a 6-week history of small intestinal diarrhea. Regenerative anemia, hypoproteinemia, and an increased plasma C-reactive protein concentration were detected on blood examination. Fecal examination and abdominal radiography were unremarkable. Abdominal ultrasonography showed diffusely hyperechoic mucosa in the small intestine. Gastroduodenoscopy, performed under general anesthesia, revealed mucosal edema and increased granularity in the duodenum and jejunum. Histopathological examination of the endoscopically biopsied small int

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection caused by sparganum, which can migrate in the brain. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the migration of cerebral sparganosis and describe its patterns on MR imaging.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: MR images of 14 patients with cerebral sparganosis treated from 2005 to 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. Diagnosis was made on the basis of a constellation of clinical history, laboratory tests, imaging findings, and histopathology. At least 3 MR imaging studies were performed for each patient during the follow-up perio

In the present study, the relationship between progression of Mesocestoides vogae infection in the liver of mice, the accumulation rate of collagen types I and III, gene expression of fibrogenic factors and cytokines was examined within 6weeks p.i. Due to asexual multiplication, the total number of larvae in the liver increased considerably and 63.4% were found in collagen capsules on day 42 p.i. Intense staining for both collagens was recorded in the activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) throughout the period of this study in the inflammatory lesions. With progressing infection, cellular ex

The blood brain barrier (BBB) and the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCB) limit the influx of immune mediators and bloodstream compounds into the central nervous system (CNS). Upon injury or infection, the integrity of these barriers is compromised and leukocyte infiltration occurs. The BCB is located in the choroid plexuses (CPs) found within ventricles of the brain, and it is considered one of the main routes of cellular infiltration into the CNS into healthy individuals. Our group recently showed that in a murine model of neurocysticercosis (NCC), there is a moderate increase in infiltr

The analysis of epidemiological data concerning human cysticercosis point to important advances in understanding the magnitude and distribution of this parasitic disease in Latin America, as well as the relationship of the elements that conform the life cycle of Taenia solium. The data indicate that the main risk factor for acquiring human neurocysticercosis and swine cysticercosis is the presence of the tapeworm carrier in the household. Therefore, several intervention measures for the control of cysticercosis have been evaluated: mass treatment in order to cure tapeworm carriers, health educ

Man has acquired helminth infections at different times during his evolutionary history and animals have and do serve an important role in supplementing these acquisitions. Helminth species are divided into those which accompanied man as he emerger as a species and those which he has since acquired from domestic, wild and domiciliated animals by breakdown of ecological, physiological and immunological barriers (Sprent 1969). With particular reference to helminth zoonoses transmitted through domesticated animals, the role played by dogs and cats in disease transmission to man (in urban environm

Echinococcus species are zoonotic cestodes found worldwide, posing a risk to humans and animals. Echinococcus multilocularis and E. granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) are both a concern in North America. Wild and domestic canids are definitive hosts, while rodents and ruminants are intermediate hosts for E. multilocularis and E. granulosus s.l., respectively. Humans can be alternative intermediate hosts for both Echinococcus species, and domestic dogs can serve as intermediate hosts for E. multilocularis. Recent Echinococcus detections in the eastern United States and Canada indicate a need for surv
