Antibiotic resistance trends among Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolated from the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland: a longitudinal study.

Antibiotics are often used to treat severe Vibrio infections, with third-generation cephalosporins and tetracyclines combined or fluoroquinolones alone being recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Increases in antibiotic resistance of both environmental and clinical vibrios are of concern; however, limited longitudinal data have been generated among environmental isolates to inform how resistance patterns may be changing over time. Hence, we evaluated long-term trends in antibiotic resistance of vibrios isolated from Chesapeake Bay waters (Maryland) across two 3-year

Prevalence of Bacteria and Antimicrobial Resistance Genes in Hospital Water and Surfaces.

Purpose Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a worldwide environmental and public health problem, causing more than 250,000 deaths per year. Unregulated usage, unsafe hospital practices, and misuse in veterinary contribute to the development of multidrug resistance in various bacteria. Hospital water was hypothesized to be a hotspot for AMR transmission because of (1) increased exposure to antibiotic load, (2) poor drainage and sanitation system, (3) interaction between environmental and clinical microbes. The purpose of the research was to assess the biodiversity and AMR in hospital tap

Pathogenicity of clinical Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium isolates from Thailand in a mouse colitis model.

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium [STM]) is a leading cause of nontyphoidal salmonellosis (NTS) worldwide. The pathogenesis of NTS has been studied extensively using a streptomycin-pretreated mouse colitis model with the limited numbers of laboratory STM strains. However, the pathogenicity of the clinically isolated STM (STMC) strains endemic in Thailand in mice has not been explored. The aim of this study was to compare the pathogenicity of STMC strains collected from Northern Thailand with the laboratory STM (IR715) in mice. Five STMC isolates were obtained from the sto

Sustainable release of vancomycin, gentamicin and lidocaine from novel electrospun sandwich-structured PLGA/collagen nanofibrous membranes.

This study investigated the in vitro release of vancomycin, gentamicin, and lidocaine from novel electrospun sandwich-structured polylactide-polyglycolide (PLGA)/collagen nanofibrous membranes. For the electrospinning of biodegradable membranes, PLGA/collagen and PLGA/vancomycin/gentamicin/lidocaine were separately dissolved in 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP). They were then electrospun into sandwich structured membranes, with PLGA/collagen for the surface layers and PLGA/drugs for the core layer. After electrospinning, an elution method and HPLC assay were employed to characterize th

Detection of plasmid-mediated mcr-1 gene in multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli from clinical specimens at a tertiary hospital in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of antibiotic resistance, particularly plasmid-mediated colistin resistance, poses a critical threat to global public health, given colistin's role as a last-resort antibiotic for treating multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. Despite its significance, data on colistin resistance and the prevalence of mobile colistin resistance (mcr) genes in Nepal are scarce. This study aims to investigate the occurrence of plasmid-mediated mobilized colistin resistance genes mcr-1 and mcr-2 in MDR Escherichia coli isolates from clinical specimens, highlighting the burden o

Genomic analysis of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli isolated from dairy cows in Shihezi city, Xinjiang, China.

INTRODUCTION: Dairy farming plays a vital role in agriculture and nutrition; however, the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among bacterial pathogens poses significant risks to public health and animal welfare. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli strains are of particular concern due to their potential for zoonotic transmission and resistance to multiple antibiotics. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of AMR and analyzed the genomes of two MDR E. coli isolated from dairy cows in Shihezi City. METHODS: Fecal samples were collected from dairy cows, and E. coli strain

Minocycline and Omadacycline Resistance Among Carbapenem-Resistant Gram-Negative Bacteria: Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing and Molecular Characterization.

Increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant infections has rendered the healthcare systems ineffective in managing infectious diseases. Drugs of "last resort" like carbapenems and polymyxins are becoming less effective in the management of antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections, leaving the clinicians with limited choices. Evaluation of the efficacy of other available broad-spectrum antibiotics (belonging to a different class) is warranted as a treatment alternative. The current study was undertaken to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of minocycline and a new drug

Phenotypic and genotypic changes of Staphylococcus aureus in the presence of the inappropriate concentration of chlorhexidine gluconate.

BACKGROUND: Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) is a disinfectant agent with different applications in health care. Improper use of CHG causes antimicrobial resistance in bacteria as a public health threat. Since Staphylococcus aureus is a common bacteria, it is expected usually exposed to CHG in the hospital and community. The present study aimed to correlate the phenotypic and genotypic changes in a S. aureus strain upon serial adaptation with supra-inhibitory CHG concentration for 50 days. RESULTS: After in vitro serial culture of 5 × 105 CFU/ml of a clinical vancomycin-susceptible S. aureus str

Prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase and carbapenemase-producing Escherichia coli from patients, cattle, and environmental sources in northwest Amhara, Ethiopia: a one health approach.

BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a Gram-negative, ubiquitous bacterium found in humans, animals, and the environment. Certain strains, notably extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing E. coli (ESBL-PEC) and carbapenemase-producing E. coli (CPEC), cause life-threatening intestinal and extraintestinal infections. While some studies exist in patients, data on the prevalence of ESBL-PEC and CPEC among human patients, cattle, and the environment, using a One Health approach, are limited. We aimed to determine the prevalence of ESBL-PEC and CPEC among patients, cattle, and the environment in

In vitro antimicrobial activity of silver nanoparticles against selected Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogens.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Infections caused by pathogenic bacteria increase patient morbidity and mortality and significantly raise treatment costs. The use of silver nanoparticles as an alternative treatment for S aureus, E coli, MRSA, E faecalis, K pneumoniae and P aeruginosa indicates their antibacterial effect and prompts medical research to consider the next generation of antibacterial drugs that could change antibiotic therapy. By combining silver nanoparticles with different classes of antibiotics, the antibacterial effect is evidenced by increased values of the inhibition zone compared to th

High prevalence of ST131 among CTX-M-producing Escherichia coli from community-acquired infections, in the Czech Republic.

A total of 2,683 nonrepetitive Escherichia coli isolates were collected from microbiological laboratories covering all regions of the Czech Republic, during April 2011. Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of E. coli were assessed. All 38 cefotaxime-resistant (CTX-R) isolates were found to be extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-positive by the double-disc synergy test. Thirty-two of those isolates produced enzymes of CTX-M-1 family, five of CTX-M-9 family, and one isolate both CTX-M types. Genotyping by multilocus sequence typing classified all ESBL-producing isolates into 13 sequence types
