INTRODUCTION: Recent reports suggested that blind laparoscopic entry techniques, including Veress needle (VN), might increase the risks of potentially fatal complications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All consecutive patients who underwent laparoscopy in two Pediatric Hospitals with the use of a Veress needle during a 14-year period have been included. In all cases the first trocar was a radially expanding one (STEP). Complications related to the insertion technique are reported as well as those related to the whole laparoscopic technique.

BACKGROUND: Splenic rupture during acute malaria is rare but underreported. Because splenic rupture occurs mostly in non-immune adults, ongoing malaria elimination efforts may paradoxically increase the proportion of Plasmodium-infected patients suffering from this life-threatening complication. The pathogenesis and optimal patient management are still debated.

We report here complications of percutaneous transhepatic catheterization of the portal venous system in 170 Japanese patients with portal hypertension. All patients underwent percutaneous transhepatic portography and percutaneous transhepatic obliteration of oesophagogastric varices was also performed in 29 patients. Procedures involved in grooming, bathing, and other pet services can often lead animals to death. Of the necropsies of 1391 animals carried out at a private diagnostic laboratory in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 2004 to 2009, 94 were dogs that died during the above-mentioned procedures. The linear dependence of the intraabdominal pressure and the volume of retroperitoneal bleeding was revealed in 34 patients with the aortic aneurism rupture. In patients with the blunt abdominal trauma, treated conservatively and laparotomized (each group consisted of 26 patients), the intraabdominal pressure is higher in the operated group during the first day after the operation. The main factors of the intraabdominal hypertension seem to be shock and massive infusion and transfusion therapy.
