The use of laser Doppler imaging as a predictor of burn depth and hypertrophic scar postburn injury.

Hypertrophic scarring (HTS) is a fibroproliferative disorder that commonly develops after severe burn injuries. Overexpression of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) by an increased number of fibrocytes has been associated with increased extracellular matrix molecule expression leading to HTS. The most widely accepted adjuvant to clinical assessment of burn depth is laser Doppler imaging (LDI) and may predict injury to the dermis that corresponds to cellular and molecular changes associated with HTS. A prospective, blinded, control trial was performed comparing LDI and clinical assessment for

[Familial indifference to pain with somatosensory asymmetry: possible central anomaly].

A family of seven siblings is described. The mother and six siblings have been examined, the eldest and youngest of whom suffer from congenital indifference to pain , although both were ticklish, and itched. The functions examined included somatosensory perception thresholds and autonomic functions; perception thresholds were greatly raised in the painfree subjects and to a lesser extent in some other family members, asymmetrically in all cases, being higher in the dominant hand. Painfree Subject 1 also underwent cerebrospinal fluid analysis at age 16, which showed normal B-endorphin levels bu

Normal coronary flow reserve after arterial switch operation for transposition of the great arteries: an intracoronary Doppler guidewire study.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies performed with positron emission tomography have suggested that coronary flow reserve (CFR) is moderately to severely reduced after the arterial switch operation (ASO). These findings are of great concern but have not been confirmed by other methods. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eleven symptom-free children were studied between 4 and 11 (median 6.0) years after the ASO. Flow velocity in the left anterior descending (LAD) and right coronary arteries (RCA) was measured with a 0.014-inch Doppler FloWire (Cardiometrics) before and after intracoronary injection of adenosine (0.5

An important role for A20-binding inhibitor of nuclear factor-kB-1 (ABIN1) in inflammation-mediated endothelial dysfunction: an in vivo study in ABIN1 (D485N) mice.

INTRODUCTION: The link between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and patients with chronic inflammation is not clearly understood. We examined a knock-in mouse expressing a poly-ubiquitin-binding-defective mutant of the protein ABIN1 (ABIN1(D485N)), which develops a systemic lupus erythematosus-like autoimmune disease because of the hyperactivation of IκB kinases (IκKs) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). These mice were used to determine the potential role of these signaling pathways in inflammation-mediated CVD development. METHODS: Laser Doppler imaging in combination with the iontop

Triptans reduce the inflammatory response in bacterial meningitis.

Severe headache and meningism provide clear evidence for the activation of trigeminal neurotransmission in meningitis. The authors assessed the antiinflammatory potential of 5HT1B/D/F receptor agonists (triptans), which inhibit the release of proinflammatory neuropeptides from perivascular nerve fibers. In a 6-hour rat model of pneumococcal meningitis, zolmitriptan and naratriptan reduced the influx of leukocytes into the cerebrospinal fluid, and attenuated the increase of regional cerebral blood flow. Elevated intracranial pressure as well as the brain water content at 6 hours was reduced by

Carbonic anhydrases and mucosal vanilloid receptors help mediate the hyperemic response to luminal CO2 in rat duodenum.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The duodenal mucosa is exposed to PCO(2) >200 mm Hg due to the luminal mixture of gastric acid with secreted bicarbonate, which augments mucosal protective mechanisms. We examined the hyperemic response to elevated luminal PCO(2) in the duodenum of anesthetized rats luminally exposed to high CO(2) saline to help elucidate luminal acid-sensing mechanisms. METHODS: Blood flow was measured by laser Doppler, and intracellular pH of epithelial cells by measured by ratio microimaging.
