Re-emerging Lassa fever outbreaks in Nigeria: Re-enforcing "One Health" community surveillance and emergency response practice.

We evaluated the impact of man-made conflict events and climate change impact in guiding evidence-based community "One Health" epidemiology and emergency response practice against re-/emerging epidemics. Increasing evidence of emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases including recent Lassa fever outbreaks in almost 20 states in Nigeria led to 101 deaths and 175 suspected and confirmed cases since August 2015. Of the 75 laboratory confirmed cases, 90 deaths occurred representing 120% laboratory-confirmed case fatality. The outbreak has been imported into neighbouring country such as Benin, wh

Wired for care: a cross-sectional survey protocol of health information technology, resilience and performance in Canadian long-term care homes.

INTRODUCTION: Canadian long-term care (LTC) homes have faced long-standing challenges with quality of care, staffing and resource limitations. In Ontario, specifically, there has been increased focus on resilience and performance in LTC homes given the burden that the COVID-19 pandemic presented (eg, highest number of resident deaths due to COVID-19 across Canada, staffing crisis). Nevertheless, little is known about the current practices and operational state of LTC homes in the province and limited data are collected on Ontario's LTC homes at the organisational level and on the factors that

Validation of H5 influenza virus subtyping RT-qPCR assay and low prevalence of H5 detection in 2024-2025 influenza virus season.

A sustained outbreak of H5N1 influenza virus among wild fowl and domestic livestock has caused more than 70 zoonotic infections in humans in North America, including two deaths. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended rapid H5 subtyping for all hospitalized cases with influenza A virus infection to enable prompt initiation of antiviral treatment, as well as infection prevention and implementation of public health measures to control spread. To address these needs, we developed a qualitative multiplex RT-qPCR assay to subtype H5 influenza virus in nasal, nas

Crisis Preparedness by Simulating Quality-Adjusted Life-Year Loss in Patients with End-Stage Renal Disease due to Kidney Transplantation Suspensions.

UNLABELLED: Background. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we realize that kidney transplantation (KT) suspension may become necessary. Although the impact of KT moratoriums on the mortality of candidates for KT has been reported, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was usually not considered. For crisis preparedness, we aimed to include quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) in the balance. Methods. We estimated 1) the health-state evolution of the French end-stage renal disease population using a semi-Markovian approach (76,980 French patients who began dialysis or were registered on the wait

ViralMap: predicting features in viral proteins from primary sequence.

Modern viral vaccines are designed to elicit an immune response against viral proteins that mediate infection, making those proteins important targets for characterization and engineering. To improve vaccine efficacy, the proteins often require changes to specific residues or domains to enhance immunogenicity and induce a protective response. These engineering strategies vary significantly across viruses, making comprehensive and accurate protein sequence annotation a crucial step for guiding vaccine design. The growing risk of novel pathogen emergence and initiatives such as the CEPI 100 Days

Temporal association between influenza A and B positivity and fever-clinic visit burden in Shanghai, China, 2022-2025: a retrospective time-series study.

BACKGROUND: Temporal changes in respiratory virus circulation after the COVID-19 pandemic have created new challenges for fever-clinic preparedness. Outpatient influenza laboratory activity may provide useful operational information, but its type-specific temporal relationship with subsequent fever-clinic burden has not been well characterized. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective time-series study using aggregated fever-clinic visit records and outpatient influenza testing data from Renji Hospital, Shanghai, China, from 2022 to 2025. Lead-lag correlations were evaluated over a primary -28 t

Molecular Epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in Northern Greece from the Index Case up to Early 2025 Using Nanopore Sequencing.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Since its emergence in late 2019, SARS-CoV-2 has demonstrated remarkable genetic diversity driven by mutations and recombination events that shaped the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Continuous genomic monitoring is essential to track viral evolution, assess the spread of variants of concern (VOCs), and inform public health strategies. The present study aimed to characterize the molecular epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in northern Greece from the first national case in February 2020 through early 2025. METHODS: A total of 66 respiratory samples collected from hospitalized

Knowledge, attitudes, practices, and perception of COVID-19 preventive measures among adult residents of Matadi (Democratic Republic of the Congo) after the third epidemic wave.

BACKGROUND: Several governments from African countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), implemented stringent public health measures to curb COVID-19 transmission in the early phases of the pandemic. While these restrictive measures are believed to have contributed to lowering case incidence and related mortality in DRC, data on the population's knowledge and adherence are limited. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, perception, attitudes, and practices of COVID-19 preventive measures and associated factors among adult residents of Matadi, thereby generating evidenc

Honokiol Inhibits SARS-CoV-2 Replication in Cell Culture at a Post-Entry Step.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged in 2019, and the resulting pandemic has already caused the death of over 6 million people. There are currently few antivirals approved for treatment of the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19), and more options would be beneficial, not only now but also to increase our preparedness for future coronavirus outbreaks. Honokiol is a small molecule from magnolia trees for which several biological effects have been reported, including anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities. Honokiol has also been shown to inhibit several viruse

Heat-Related Deaths - United States, 2004-2018.

Deaths attributable to natural heat exposure, although generally considered preventable (1), represent a continuing public health concern in the United States. During 2004-2018, an average of 702 heat-related deaths occurred in the United States annually. To study patterns in heat-related deaths by age group, sex, race/ethnicity, and level of urbanization, and to explore comorbid conditions associated with deaths resulting from heat exposure, CDC analyzed nationally comprehensive mortality data from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS).* The rate of heat-related mortality tended to be h

A Single Dose of an Avian H3N8 Influenza Virus Vaccine Is Highly Immunogenic and Efficacious against a Recently Emerged Seal Influenza Virus in Mice and Ferrets.

UNLABELLED: H3N8 influenza viruses are a commonly found subtype in wild birds, usually causing mild or no disease in infected birds. However, they have crossed the species barrier and have been associated with outbreaks in dogs, pigs, donkeys, and seals and therefore pose a threat to humans. A live attenuated, cold-adapted (ca) H3N8 vaccine virus was generated by reverse genetics using the wild-type (wt) hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) genes from the A/blue-winged teal/Texas/Sg-00079/2007 (H3N8) (tl/TX/079/07) wt virus and the six internal protein gene segments from the ca influenza

Unique Determinants of Neuraminidase Inhibitor Resistance among N3, N7, and N9 Avian Influenza Viruses.

UNLABELLED: Human infections with avian influenza viruses are a serious public health concern. The neuraminidase (NA) inhibitors (NAIs) are the frontline anti-influenza drugs and are the major option for treatment of newly emerging influenza. Therefore, it is essential to identify the molecular markers of NAI resistance among specific NA subtypes of avian influenza viruses to help guide clinical management. NAI-resistant substitutions in NA subtypes other than N1 and N2 have been poorly studied. Here, we identified NA amino acid substitutions associated with NAI resistance among influenza viru
