A survey of the occurrence of motion sickness amongst passengers at sea.

A questionnaire survey of motion sickness occurrence on board passenger ferries has been conducted. Data were collected from 20,029 passengers on 114 voyages on 9 vessels: 6 ships, 2 hovercraft, and 1 jetfoil. Information was obtained about feelings of illness, the occurrence of vomiting, the taking of anti-seasickness tablets, the consumption of alcoholic drinks, regularity of travel by sea, age, and sex. Overall, 7% of passengers reported vomiting at some time during the journey, 21% said they felt "slightly unwell," 4% felt "quite ill," and a further 4% felt "absolutely dreadful." Both vomi

Comparison of aerobic fitness and space motion sickness during the shuttle program.

Space motion sickness (SMS) is an important problem for short duration space flight and 71% of STS crewmembers develop symptoms. The search for effective countermeasures and factors that correlate with sensitivity has been extensive. Recently, several investigators have linked aerobic fitness with motion sickness sensitivity in the 1-G or high-G environment. This paper compares the aerobic fitness of 125 Shuttle crewmembers with their SMS symptom category. Aerobic fitness data were obtained from the exercise tolerance test (ETT) conducted nearest the time of launch. SMS data were derived from

Neuropsychiatric observations of proprioceptive sensitivity in motion sickness susceptibility.

The assessment of motion sickness susceptibility is still an unsolved problem, due in part to its unclear etiology. We studied 16 referred patients suffering from "idiopathic motion sickness" and 4 pilots suffering from motion airsickness. All clinical and neurological tests proved negative, including electroencephalograms, electronystagmograms, Doppler studies, and computerized tomography of the brain. Cervical spine X-rays and personality characteristics were assessed. Simultaneously, 35 asymptomatic pilots and pilot applicants were studied as controls. Both groups were exposed to cross-coup

Operation Everest II: lack of an effect of extreme altitude on visual contrast sensitivity.

Contrast sensitivity thresholds were studied over 40 d during gradual ascent to a simulated terrestrial altitude of 25,000 ft in a decompression chamber. Only ambient pressure, and thus inspired oxygen pressure, was varied, thereby eliminating many of the confounding effects of cold, dehydration, malnutrition and exhaustion, inevitably encountered on very high mountains. Contrast sensitivity thresholds measured by the Ginsburg Vistech test showed no overall impairment as altitude increased. These results are different from those of other previously reported vision studies involving shorter exp

Effects of atropine and pyridostigmine in heat-stressed patas monkeys.

The effects of a single intramuscular atropine injection (0.03 mg.kg-1) and a chronic oral pyridostigmine treatment (0.4 mg.kg-1, 3 times/day over a period of 7 d) on the thermoregulatory effector responses of unanesthetized patas monkeys were investigated using indirect calorimetry. The effects of atropine treatment on the thermoregulatory effector responses of patas monkeys exposed to 25 degrees and 35 degrees C were qualitatively similar but quantitatively greater at 35 degrees C. At 35 degrees C atropine decreased sweating (Esw) 52%, increased rectal temperature (Tre), mean skin temperatur

Prophylactic corticosteroid suppresses endotoxemia in heat-stressed primates.

We previously found that lipopolysaccharides (LPS) leak from the gut lumen into the hepatic portal vein during heat stroke. Furthermore, we found that prophylactic corticosteroid administration could prevent a rise in plasma LPS concentration in superior mesenteric artery occlusion shock. In this study, we found that treatment prior to heat-stress with corticosteroids could prevent any rise in plasma LPS concentration in heat-stressed primates. Two groups of primates, one of which received a prophylactic dose of methylprednisolone sodium succinate (MPSS) (n = 4) were subjected to heat-stress (

Prophylactic corticosteroid increases survival in experimental heat stroke in primates.

It has been suggested that endotoxins or lipopolysaccharides (LPS), may contribute to heat stroke pathophysiology. In this study, 11 anesthetised monkeys were divided into 2 groups. The steroid group (n = 5) had received a dose of MPSS (30 mg.kg-1, i.v.) before being heat-stressed and the control animals (n = 6) received saline equivolumetrically. The animals were heat-stressed to a rectal temperature of 43.5 degrees C in an environmental temperature of 41 +/- 0.3 degrees C and 100% relative humidity and then allowed to recover at room temperature. Blood samples for LPS and anti-LPS IgG analys

Thermal comparison of aircrew clothing aboard OV-10 aircraft.

Thermal evaluation of aircrew clothing in the field usually involves conditions which make it difficult to distinguish clothing effects from other, confounding factors. This paper reports a field study designed to solve this problem. The question concerned possible heat stress effects caused by adding an oxygen mask, an anti-g suit, or both to the usual clothing worn by pilots of OV-10 (twin turboprop) aircraft during 20 hot-weather flights (actual experimental temperatures of Tdb = 28-38 degrees C, rh = 18-20%). The four test ensembles were flown simultaneously, allowing side-by-side comparis

Mood states at 1600 and 4300 meters terrestrial altitude.

Personal anecdotes suggest that ascent to high altitude can cause mood changes such as depression, apathy, and drowsiness. Observed behaviors at high altitude indicate that people can become more euphoric, irritable, or argumentative. Since there are few systematic and quantitative studies assessing the effects of altitude on mood, this study compared moods measured at two different altitudes and times of day (morning-evening) using a standardized scale. Self-rated moods were determined twice daily in 19 males and 16 females with the Clyde Mood Scale. Baseline values were determined at 200 m;

Heat intolerance, heat exhaustion monitored: a case report.

A 32-year-old male (Mr. A.), monitored during an 8-d heat acclimation (HA) investigation, unexpectedly exhibited heat intolerance and heat exhaustion. Thirteen other males completed HA without indications of either heat intolerance or heat exhaustion. Because Mr. A. responded normally to HA on days 1-4, the intervention of an unknown host factor on days 5-8 was suggested. Mr. A.'s heat exhaustion episode (day 8) was apparently forewarned by loss of body weight and increased delta HR, delta Tsk (days 5-8) and delta Tre (days 7-8) during daily 90-min trials. His symptoms indicated classical salt

Heart rate responses to moderate linear body accelerations: clinical implications in aeromedical evacuation.

Linear accelerations during take-off and landing were measured in both civilian and military aircraft usually involved in aeromedical evacuations in Denmark. Accelerations of similar durations and magnitudes were induced in six healthy subjects transported in an ambulance in different supine positions. Heart rate responses recorded depended significantly on the position of the subject. It was concluded that seriously ill patients must be positioned transversely to the axis of acceleration during aeromedical evacuation.

Psychiatric components of a health maintenance facility (HMF) on Space Station.

The operation of a permanently manned space station brings a special challenge to psychiatry due to the combined physiological, emotional, and social stresses which will affect its occupants. Psychiatric diagnostic and therapeutic techniques will be a part of the Space Station's general medical support, known as the Health Maintenance Facility (HMF). The psychiatric component of HMF will promote psychological health throughout the mission and permit treatment, if necessary, of those psychiatric disorders which could impact mission success. This paper will discuss these emotional disorders and

Respiratory response and muscle function during isometric handgrip exercise at high altitude.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if the hyperventilatory response to fatiguing isometric exercise at sea level could predict resting ventilation and acute mountain sickness (AMS) at 4300 m altitude. Exercise consisted of four successive endurance handgrips held to complete fatigue at 40% of maximum isometric handgrip strength (MHS). There was no relationship between the magnitude or pattern of exercise-induced hyperventilation at sea level and the severity of AMS later at altitude. Sea level hyperventilatory response was not predictive of resting ventilation at altitude. Alti

Efficacy of transdermal scopolamine against seasickness: a 3-day study at sea.

Transdermal scopolamine has been reported to provide protection against motion sickness, both while sailing at sea (7-8 h) and under experimental conditions. In this study, we tested the efficacy of transdermal scopolamine and evaluated its side effects during a 72-h cruise at sea. We tested 38 male volunteers, 20-25 years old, who were located on a 3000-ton vessel. The presence of seasickness, defined by Graybiel's diagnostic criteria, was used to calculate percent protection. When sickness was considered as malaise II or more, the drug provided 74, 73, and 39% protection during the three sai

Changes of skin potential level and of skin resistance level corresponding to lasting motion discomfort.

The qualitative correspondence between degree of motion discomfort and electrodermal activity was investigated. Skin potential level (SPL) and skin resistance level (SRL) in the arousal sweat area and the thermal sweat area were recorded. In order to induce motion discomfort, Coriolis stimulation and/or horizontal body rotation were provided by using a rotatory chair. The degree of discomfort was evaluated according to reports by the subjects. It was observed that SPL depolarized in the arousal sweat area as well as in the thermal sweat area and SRL lowered in the thermal sweat area coincident

The combined effect of cinnarizine and domperidone on vestibular susceptibility.

Four test medications were randomly examined in 25 volunteers for the depressant effect on the labyrinth during stimulation in a rotation chair as well as in a parallel swing. The medications, placebo (pl), Domperidone 30 mg (D), Cinnarizine 40 mg (C) and Touristil 40 mg + 30 mg (C+D), were tested at 1-week intervals, the duration and amplitude of nystagmus having been recorded 15 min, 30 min, 1, 2, 3 and 4 h after intake of the medication. In both tests Touristil (C+D) was significantly (p less than 0.01) to very significantly (p less than 0.0001) more potent, more rapid, and longer working t

Asymmetric otolith function and increased susceptibility to motion sickness during exposure to variations in gravitoinertial acceleration level.

Von Baumgarten and his colleagues (23,24) have suggested that asymmetries in otolith function between the left and right labyrinths may result from differences in otoconial mass and could play a role in space motion sickness. Such asymmetries would be centrally compensated for under terrestrial conditions but on exposure to weightlessness the persisting central compensation would produce a central imbalance that could lead to motion sickness. We have used ocular counterrolling as a way of measuring the relative "efficiency" of the left and right otoliths and have compared the ocular counterrol

A comparison of two methods of training resistance to visually-induced motion sickness.

This report concerns the use of two methods of training subjects to tolerate visually-induced motion sickness (VMS). Sixteen subjects were selected on the basis of their response to a motion sickness history questionnaire and assigned to one of four groups on the basis of their ability to tolerate visually-induced motion (VM). One group received 10 sessions of confidence building and desensitization training (BT); a second group received 10 sessions of EMG and temperature biofeedback (FB); a third group received 10 sessions of BT and 10 sessions of FB (BTFB); and a fourth group received no tre

Vestibular response to pseudorandom angular velocity input: progress report.

Space motion sickness was not reported during the first Apollo missions; however, since Apollo 8 through the current Shuttle and Skylab missions, approximately 50% of the crewmembers have experienced instances of space motion sickness. One of NASA's efforts to resolve the space adaptation syndrome is to model the vestibular response for both basic knowledge and as a possible predictor of an individual's susceptibility to the disorder. This report describes a method to analyze the vestibular system when subjected to a pseudorandom angular velocity input.

Transfer of perceptual-motor training and the space adaptation syndrome.

Perceptual cue conflict may be the basis for the symptoms which are experienced by space travelers in microgravity conditions. Recovery has been suggested to take place after perceptual modification or reinterpretation. To elucidate this process, 10 subjects who repeatedly experienced a visual/vestibular conflict (Purkinje) over trials and days, were then tested in a similar but not identical perceptual situation (pseudo-Coriolis) to determine whether any savings in perceptual adaptation had occurred as compared to an unpracticed control group (N = 10). The practiced subjects experienced lesse
