Improving Neurocysticercosis Diagnosis: Neurocysticercosis Diagnostic Practices at a Large Public Hospital System in Texas.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a cestode infection of the central nervous system caused by the larval form of Taenia solium. Diagnosis is often delayed because of low health care provider awareness of the disease. This study evaluated contemporary provider practices within a large county health care system in the United States. We retrospectively identified adult patients with NCC between 2017 and 2021 through the International Classification of Diseases 10 diagnostic code and extracted variables from their electronic medical records using a standardized data collection form. We compared provider

Synanthropic mammals as sentinels of multi-pathogen circulation at a wildlife-urban interface.

Peri-urban forest fragments used for ecotourism concentrate interactions among wildlife, domestic animals, and humans, creating conditions that favour pathogen transmission through environmental, vector-borne, and trophic pathways. In these landscapes, synanthropic small mammals may act as integrative indicators of pathogen exposure because they interact with wildlife, domestic animals, and human-modified environments. This study conducted multi-pathogen surveillance in synanthropic small mammals to investigate infection patterns at a wildlife-urban interface in a Brazilian ecotourism area. Se

Pacific Islands cetaceans: a review of strandings from 2006-2024.

We report significant pathological findings from 272 stranding investigations of 20 cetacean species in the Pacific Islands region between 2006 and 2024. Full or partial necropsies of 209 cases (76.8%) resulted in one or more diagnoses associated with death in 137 cases. Natural disease accounted for 62% of stranded animals; approximately half were in poor body condition due to chronic illness. Morbillivirus and Brucella sp. infections caused mortality in 11 species, including striped dolphins and Longman's beaked whales. Toxoplasmosis, of anthropogenic cause in Hawai'i, led to deaths of 2 spi

Observations on the endoparasites of sika deer (Cervus nippon) kept in captivity (deer farms and parks) in Germany.

Sika deer, primarily animals of Japanese origin, have been introduced into Europe and, following release into the wild, established free-ranging populations in several countries, including Germany. In addition to the wild populations, sika deer are still maintained in deer parks and there are also deer farms carrying sika deer for venison production. However, to date there is no information about the parasite fauna that infect farmed sika deer and only little knowledge on parasites of sika deer in parks. This work summarizes the results of the examination for endoparasites of viscera and muscl

Detailed characterisation of the Co-Smad protein in liver fluke Fasciola gigantica.

Fasciolosis, caused by the liver flukes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica, is a zoonotic parasitic disease associated with substantial economic losses in livestock. The transforming growth factor-beta signalling pathway is implicated in developmental processes and biological functions throughout the animal kingdom, including the Fasciola spp. It may also mediate host-helminth interactions during infection. In this work, we present an exploration of FgSmad4, the sole member of the Co-Smad protein family in F. gigantica. The isolated FgSmad4 cDNA was 4,014 bp in length encoding for a prot

Molecular Mimicry Drives Locally Produced Autoantibodies in Subarachnoid Neurocysticercosis.

BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid neurocysticercosis (SANCC) is a condition manifested by chronic meningitis induced by infection with Taenia solium. We sought to determine if there is evidence of autoantibody production in SANCC and whether local production of autoantibodies could be driven by immunogenic homologues found in T. solium. METHODS: Reactivity of pooled cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) from SANCC patients and uninfected controls was screened against a human proteome chip. Serum from 27 SANCC patients was then tested for antibodies to the 15 top screen hits using a Luciferase ImmunoPrecipitatio

Retrospective study of canine endoparasites diagnosed by fecal flotation methods analyzed across veterinary parasitology diagnostic laboratories, United States, 2018.

BACKGROUND: Companion animal endoparasites play a substantial role in both veterinary medicine and public health. Updated epidemiological studies are necessary to identify trends in occurrence and distribution of these parasites, and their associated risk factors. This study aimed to assess the occurrence of canine endoparasites  retrospectively, using fecal flotation  test data available through participating academic veterinary parasitology diagnostic laboratories across the United States of America (USA). METHODS: Canine fecal flotation records from ten veterinary diagnostic laboratories l

Fox baiting against Echinococcus multilocularis: contrasted achievements among two medium size cities.

In Europe, most cities are currently colonized by red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), which are considered to be the main definitive host of the zoonotic cestode Echinococcus multilocularis. The risk of transmission to humans is of particular concern where high fox populations overlap with high human populations. The distribution of baits containing praziquantel has successfully reduced the infection pressure in rural areas and in small plots within large cities. The purpose of this study was to assess its efficiency in two medium size cities (less than 100,000 inhabitants) in areas of high human alveo

Hepatic echinococcosis: clinical and therapeutic aspects.

Echinococcosis or hydatid disease (HD) is a zoonosis caused by the larval stages of taeniid cestodes belonging to the genus Echinococcus. Hepatic echinococcosis is a life-threatening disease, mainly differentiated into alveolar and cystic forms, associated with Echinoccus multilocularis (E. multilocularis) and Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus) infection, respectively. Cystic echinococcosis (CE) has a worldwide distribution, while hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is endemic in the Northern hemisphere, including North America and several Asian and European countries, like France, Germa

Echinococcus multilocularis: molecular characterization of EmSmadE, a novel BR-Smad involved in TGF-β and BMP signaling.

Smad transcription factors are central components of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β)/bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling pathways in metazoans, and regulate key developmental processes such as body axis formation or regeneration. In the present study, we have identified and characterized a novel member of this protein family, EmSmadE, in the human parasitic cestode Echinococcus multilocularis, the causative agent of alveolar echinococcosis. The cDNA of the corresponding gene, emsmadE, was fully sequenced and shown to encode a protein with considerable homologies to known members of

The role of pelagic swarm fish (Myctophidae: Teleostei) in the oceanic life cycle of Anisakis sibling species at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Central Atlantic.

First information is provided on the parasitation and feeding ecology of the myctophid fish species Myctophum punctatum and Notoscopelus kroyeri from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), Central Atlantic. Four different parasite species were found in both fish with a similar high prevalence and intensity of infestation. The digeneans Gonocerca phycidis and Lethadena sp. were isolated as adults from the stomach, larval tetraphyllidean cestodes (Scolex pleuronectis) from the intestine, and genetically identified larval anisakid nematodes of Anisakis simplex (s.s.) from the body cavity. Human Taeniasis and cysticercosis in Asia.

CONTEXT: Human Taeniasis caused by the pork, Taenia solium, or beef, T saginata, tapeworm arises after eating pork or beef contaminated with metacestodes, the larval stage of these parasites. Taeniasis with T solium can lead to neurocysticercosis and threaten others by accidental ingestion of eggs released from asymptomatic Taeniasis patients. The 2003 World Health Assembly declared that T solium is of worldwide public-health importance, and that it is an eradicable parasitic disease worldwide. Adult taeniid tapeworms expelled from people in almost all Asian countries appeared to be T saginata

Epidemiology of echinococcosis.

BACKGROUND: Various species and infraspecific forms of the cestode genus Echinococcus are causative agents of human echinococcosis. Pathology, epidemiology and geographical occurrence vary widely between the different Echinococcus taxa. As a general rule, those forms of echinococcosis that are transmitted mainly by wild animals are rather rare, due to limited contact between humans and wildlife. This is the case with alveolar echinococcosis (AE) caused by Echinococcus multilocularis, the 'fox tapeworm' (except in regions where domestic dogs are heavily involved in the lifecycle), and for the S

Molecular cloning of genes encoding oncosphere proteins reveals conservation of modular protein structure in cestode antigens.

Recombinant oncosphere antigens have been found to be remarkably effective when used as vaccines against cysticercosis and hydatid disease. Comparison of the structural features of these proteins and their associated genes suggest common features between antigens. Here molecular cloning is used to complete comparisons of Taenia solium, Taenia saginata, Taenia ovis, Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis oncosphere antigens and genes. The exon/intron structure of genes cloned from T. solium and T. ovis genomic DNA (tsol16 and to16, respectively) in this study was found to be hi

Microtus arvalis and Arvicola scherman: Key Players in the Echinococcus multilocularis Life Cycle.

A broad range of rodent species are described as potential intermediate hosts for Echinococcus multilocularis, a wide-spread zoonotic cestode causing alveolar echinococcosis. However, little is known about the relative contribution of these species for parasite reproduction and the maintenance of its life cycle. In a comparative study in a high endemic region in Zurich, Switzerland, we investigated prevalence rates and fertility of E. multilocularis in the most abundant vole species as well as the predation rate of foxes on these species. To ensure that the fox families had access to different

A New Species of Pentaloculum (Cestoda: "Tetraphyllidea") from the Taiwan Saddled Carpetshark, Cirrhoscyllium formosanum (Orectolobiformes: Parascylliidae).

Collection of cestodes from the Taiwan saddled carpetshark, Cirrhoscyllium formosanum, for the first time led to the discovery of Pentaloculum hoi n. sp. This species provided important insights into the identity of the heretofore monotypic Pentaloculum-known previously only from the blind electric ray, Typhlonarke aysoni, in New Zealand. The new species differs from Pentaloculum macrocephalum in testis number, vitelline follicle and cirrus sac configuration, and in that it is hyperapolytic rather than euapolytic. Molecular phylogeny of Cyclophyllidea (Cestoda: Eucestoda): an in-silico analysis based on mtCOI gene.

Order Cyclophyllidea (of cestode platyhelminths) has a rich diversity of parasites and includes many families and species that are known to cause serious medical condition in humans and domestic and wild animals. Despite various attempts to resolve phylogenetic relationships at the inter-family level, uncertainty remains. In order to add resolution to the existing phylogeny of the order, we generated partial mtCO1 sequences for some commonly occurring cyclophyllidean cestodes and combined them with available sequences from GenBank. Phylogeny was inferred taking a total 83 representative specie
