Accelerometer-Measured Physical Activity, Fitness and Indicators of Cardiometabolic Risk among Rural Adolescents: A Cross-Sectional Study at 15-Year Follow-up of the MINIMat Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the relationship of physical activity (PA) and fitness with cardiometabolic risk among rural adolescents in low- and middle-income countries. Thus, we examined the associations of PA and fitness with selected cardiometabolic indicators along with potential gender-based differences in a birth cohort of rural adolescents from southeast Bangladesh. METHODS: We utilized data from the 15-year follow-up of Maternal and Infant Nutrition Interventions in Matlab (MINIMat) cohort (n = 2253). Wrist-worn ActiGraph wGT3x-BT accelerometers were used to estimate sedentary t

Effects of epileptic seizures on the quality of biosignals recorded from wearables.

OBJECTIVE: Wearable nonelectroencephalographic biosignal recordings captured from the wrist offer enormous potential for seizure monitoring. However, signal quality remains a challenging factor affecting data reliability. Models trained for seizure detection depend on the quality of recordings in peri-ictal periods in performing a feature-based separation of ictal periods from interictal periods. Thus, this study aims to investigate the effect of epileptic seizures on signal quality, ensuring accurate and reliable monitoring. METHODS: This study assesses the signal quality of wearable data du

Understanding the relationships between 24-hour movement behavior, community mobility and the neighborhood built environment for healthy aging in Brazil: The EpiMove study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The population is aging rapidly worldwide, impacting public health, with countries in the Global South, such as Brazil, aging faster than developed nations. The 24-hour movement behavior is crucial for healthy aging, but its relationship with the neighborhood built environment is underresearched, especially for older adults. The EpiMove Study uses accelerometers and GPS to investigate the relationships between 24-hour movement behavior, community mobility and the neighborhood built environment for healthy aging in older Brazilian adults. METHODS: The EpiMove Study is a representat

PROMIS Paediatric Mobility tool is correlated with accelerometer-measured physical activity in children with hip diseases.

AIMS: The reduction in mobility due to hip diseases in children is likely to affect their physical activity (PA) levels. Physical inactivity negatively influences quality of life and health. Our aim was to objectively measure PA in children with hip disease, and correlate it with the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Mobility Score. METHODS: A total of 28 children (12 boys and 16 girls) with hip disease aged between 8and 17 years (mean 12 (SD 3)) were studied between December 2018 and July 2019. Children completed the PROMIS Paediatric Item Bank v. 2.0 - Mobili

Walking activity in a large cohort of boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

INTRODUCTION: In this study we explored walking activity in a large cohort of boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). METHODS: Step activity (monitored for 7 days), functional ability, and strength were quantified in ambulatory boys (5-12.9 years of age) with DMD and unaffected boys. Ambulatory status was determined 2 years later. RESULTS: Two to 5 days of activity monitoring predicted weekly step activity (adjusted R2 = 0.80-0.95). Age comparisons revealed significant declines for step activity with increasing age, and relationships were found between step activity with both function a

Associations of Physical Activity Intensities with Markers of Insulin Sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Objectively measured physical activity (PA) intensity has traditionally been categorized as light, moderate, and vigorous using laboratory calibrated cut points. The relative contribution of time spent across a spectrum of accelerometer-determined intensities on health outcomes is less clear. PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the relationship between objectively measured PA intensity on a continuous scale and markers of insulin sensitivity (IS). METHODS: Participants at high risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus were recruited from primary care (Leicestershire, UK). PA was measured

Physical activity in youth with osteogenesis imperfecta type I.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) type I often show muscular weakness. However, it is unclear whether muscular weakness is a consequence of physical inactivity or a result of the disease itself. The aim was to assess muscle function in youth with OI type I and evaluate physical activity (PA). METHODS: Fourteen children with OI type I (mean age [SD]: 12.75 [4.62] years) were compared to 14 age- and gender-matched controls (mean age [SD]: 12.75 [4.59] years). Muscle force and power were determined through mechanography. PA and daily energy expenditure were measured wit

Distribution of arm velocity and frequency of arm usage during daily activity: objective outcome evaluation after shoulder surgery.

In clinical settings, functional evaluation of shoulder movement is primarily based on what the patient thinks he/she is able to do rather than what he/she is actually performing. We proposed a new approach for shoulder assessment based on inertial sensors to monitor arm movement in the daily routine. The detection of movement of the humerus relative to the trunk was first validated in a laboratory setting (sensitivity>95%, specificity>97%). Then, 41 control subjects and 21 patients suffering from a rotator cuff tear were evaluated (before and after surgery) using clinical questionnaires and a

Joint non-linear dose-response associations of device-measured physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness with cardiovascular disease: a cohort and Mendelian randomisation study.

OBJECTIVES: To characterise the non-linear joint dose-response relationship of accelerometer-measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF, estimated as maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂max)) with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD), and to assess causal consistency using Mendelian randomisation (MR). METHODS: We conducted a cohort study in the UK Biobank using accelerometer data linked to hospital and death registries. A Cox generalised additive model characterised the joint MVPA-CRF association with incident CVD (atrial fibrillation, myocardial infarct
